My argument is that yes, these fast food workers are now getting paid more than a lot of people who may have more challenging jobs, they deserve more to.

Imagine if when women got the right to vote, black people got pissed because they weren't getting what the white women were getting. They then instead of demanding the right to vote, actively tried to prevent women from voting.

Everyone who is working full time deserves a living wage, they don't deserve a 3 bedroom home with a yard, but they deserve the ability to pay their bills. Reward people for working, not keep them in poverty.

For those who do not want to read it, another major reason is that the cost of things such as healthcare, education, and housing have risen much faster than inflation and more jobs today are in lower paying service industries. It is one of the industries that has returned strongest from the recession.

We have lost a lot of mid level managers/positions in our workforce today who used to make what we generally think of as middle income salaries. The loss of these workers has been mostly absorbed by the top, well actually, completely by the top. Some of those lost salaries should be moved towards the bottom.

As someone who has studied economics in college, at real state universities, and taken multiple classes, I REALLY REALLY think you dont understand what is happening.

Using an education level as a means of argument is poor form, give me a real reason why increasing the minimum wage will disproportionately affect inflation, and cause massive job losses.

a discussion that needs to happen is what happens to an economy where everything begins to be automated. yes, technology allows us to make things cheaper, and so automation removes many jobs because they are simply less expensive than paying someone for labor over a long period of time. so the companies that switch to automation are saving money - where is all that money going? why don't the consumers see any of the benefits from a more efficient workforce? virtually any job can be replaced by technology given enough time. what happens when automation functions as a significant portion of our societal tasks that need to be taken care of by laborers now? should a basic income be considered, not because people are doing jobs in which they deserve to be paid that much, but there aren't enough high paying jobs enough to support our population? and who should pay this basic income?

i don't know, i'm just really high and throwing out ideas, i don't know too much about this stuff. but it's something i think worth talking about.

The jump is because, adjusted for inflation, the cost of living in NY is drastically more than it's ever been - or so I'd imagine. Admittedly I don't have statistics on hand, but knowing the situation out here in CA and how much more difficult/expensive it is to get rent in San Francisco and the outlying areas.. I have a feeling it's way higher than before.

Example... I make a pretty modest amount on my paychecks... but after rent and expenses, I come away with almost 1000$ every month to fuck around on.

My friend who makes twice as much as me in San Francisco scrapes the barrel for ramen and has to move out of the city soon in order to make it affordable... which means a longer, more stressful commute for him...

I'd take my situation any day :)

You will see an initial decline overall at first as companies adjust to the new payroll demands but eventually there will be a huge amount of spending. The cost of commodities wont rise because more people will be purchasing them. The cost of housing wont become unaffordable because there will be more first time home owners. Well paid, happy workers are efficient and spend regularly. Underpaid, pissed off workers dont spend at all.

There is no shortage of supply in any market, only a lack of demand due to everyone being so damn poor.

Also, all those quotes of people are just proving that they are scum and just want a hand out from the government. Making $10 you can get food stamps, so your food is taken care of, and then actually make and stick to a budget. All it really takes is some self control and you'll be fine. Did this for a couple years and was able to save a good bit while I was at it.

For housing, get some roommates, they're really not that hard to find and most places where I am living is about a $350/month rent with roommates. You're not living the high life, but work your ass off and move up in your company or go back to school and make it better. Life is what you make it to be.

There used to be a thing called the "lower middle class" its gone and it took less than a generation those people are now lower class not neccessarily on culture or upbringing but because they don't earn a livable wage.
