We should have deployed the fighter squadrons we did right then to Poland, Romania, Lithuania, and Estonia to show we weren’t fucking around. Talks of sanctions would not have sounded immeasurably stupid and pointless if we began then. There were very little indications that this wasn’t going to happen, we predicted it to within 12 hours back then. The US spent its time doing less important things and underestimated the geopolitical consequences of something like this. Afghanistan set this off, the withdrawal was already under way and then we set a stupid deadline and alerted the Taliban of it. It’s like a holiday for them now, Victory in Kabul day. These decisions aren’t just weak, they counter the military advisement the POTUS was handed. We needed to continue a slow and deliberate withdrawal there, not too the carpet out from under there feet in order to make 9/11 a Taliban day of celebration again.

Many of us have been writing about leaving Afghanistan since 2013, the fact we stayed was stupid. The fact that we sprinted out was horribly done and not thought out at all.



Russia saw that and thought “by golly this is the time to go, these dudes have their shit in the street and can’t make decisions over the most basic constructs of their culture right now. They won’t do shit”

i disagree on sanctions, there are arguments every direction, your logic can be applied, but you can also say that if things were ramped up to near 100 at the outset, then there's nowhere to go up from there/putin is already paying the highest price he is likely to so what stick do you apply after that?

people like to claim sanctions are no big deal for russia but that's simply untrue, they hate the sanctions and they're going to keep getting worse. irrespective of how the fighting itself is going, russia is not in a good spot right now

also i think you've said youre a pilot. do you have any input on there still being ukraine jets in the air near kyiv yesterday? i was under the impression we should've expected to see russia control the skies by that time yesterday

You don’t fuck around when telling someone not to start a war. Words need to be aggressive and meaningful. “If you do this I’ll sanction you maybe is fucking idiotic”.

It’s worth the 3% of GDP to make sure no one in the US has to worry about seeing Tu-95’s get shot down in San Diego or Su-35’s fly over Dallas.
