Mt. Hood Summer 2020

Timberline has given 0 information on both their spring pass this year as well as if there will be a summer season. Instead they have postponed events as far out as Labor Day.

I really don’t get how Timberline could miss out on an entire summer season. I feel like a ton of money they get comes from summer ski/snowboard camps as Timberline has the longest ski season in the US that I know of.

I’ve read articles that say Timberline has laid off as many as 430 employees. What the status is with whether or not those people will be reemployed I don’t know.

But if the States are starting to relax lockdowns (MN opening golf courses, boating, Florida opening beaches, NY and NJ opening up more essential activities, Idaho and Wyoming possibly opening nonessential businesses next week) why wouldn’t Timberline be open for skiing/snowboarding starting at the end of May/beginning of June?

Plus, i haven’t read them myself, but i have heard people say that studies have came out that the virus dies a lot faster in a sunny, warm environment.

I mean they could keep certain social distancing aspects as well. Possibly only allow 2 people on the chairs up Palmer (if Palmer isn’t fucking broken :/) and Magic Mile , makin sure they sit on opposite end stage of each other. You could have mandatory masks still, besides a lot of people are wearing something over their faces anyway to prevent major sunburn. And you could keep social distancing in the lodge itself, similar precautions grocery stores are taking back (plastic guards over ticket attendants, cashiers, tape on the ground marking out 6 ft of distance between people, etc,.).

I feel like it could totally be possible to have a summer season still. Timberline and it’s customers just need to follow precautions and be smart. That’s going to be how it is with every business and public place for quite a while I’m assuming.

DIRTYBUBBLENeither countries’ hospitals are overloaded and they’re going to achieve herd immunity in weeks. And they’re not fucking over their populace. We are going to have to deal with multiple waves of infections because we’re never going to build up immunity.

skiindianaHerd immunity is defined as an R0 less than or equal to 1 (an infected person only infects 1 person or fewer). At that point an infection cannot grow exponentially. That is somewhere between 20-80% depending on the source.

If you believe the optimistic number we're already at herd immunity in a lot of places.


We need at least 70%, more likely 90% with something like this. So no, we aren't at herd immunity anywhere. Or even close.

It’s official, they’re opening Friday. Stoked to get on a lift again and just rip some turns, any sort of park is bonus at this point.

really really hoping people can play by the rules and not ruin it for everyone, I could see them being forced to close if people are careless/selfish

If you see people not following the rules, please say something to them. This goes for everyone. We want to keep skiing.

Yea I rly hope ppl are smart and respectful and don’t overcrowd the resort on the first day. It’d be so ass if they were forced to shut down again

Kinda wack that pass holders need a reservation but it’s for the greater good. I’m sure there are a TON of pass holders especially spring pass holders since it’s like $150.


Hopefully they can find a good balance of a safe amount of people on the mountain

Damn straight. If someone isn't following the guidlines I am going to be ticked off. Everyone has cameras and Timberline has the right to revoke your privleges so Fing behave if you go. I for one will be masked and goggled up all day and giving people a good 10 ft just to be safe. Also plan to drive solo with no stops on the way there or back. Be good my friends we got this!

this is the most important aspect IMO. I also plan on going up with zero stops but thats incredibly easy cuz its just 6 miles from Govy, I recognize not many have that option and theres def gonna be people crossing multiple state lines to ski. Obviously its not hard to socially distance when you're actually on hill, but the travel to get to Hood will inevitably cause covid spread with people gassing up/stopping at restaurants/bathrooms etc...if people cut out all stops unless absolutely necessary, and take proper precautions when doing so, we can lessen the impact that Timberline re-opening will cause with its ripple

So almost a month in. How does everyone on the mountain feel about the precautions being taken by Timberline? I feel like the country in general has gotten a bit more relaxed but I'm curious, as someone who would have to travel by plane to go skiing, what the general vibes are like up there.

This is the current park setup. Also 2 jumps on 1 knuckle after it, 30 and 15 feet. The vibes were so good up there yesterday. It was warm and sunny and everyone from the wy’east academy kids to Alex Hackle was up there hiking or lapping the park. The lift ticket was a pain though at 75$

it's been $900 since at least 2015 was the first time I checked, probably years before that too, so they didn't do any covid price gauging. From Timberline's perspective: where else are you going to ski in June-September?

Normal summer it is already way too crowded though. Unfortunate but I think they are maximizing it already

It was super crowded yesterday, lots of people in the old windells lane (More than the most crowded sessions of previous summers), but the pro park had very few people. The jumps are super fun and the rail setups are getting better. There are many teams and camps packed into the beginner and intermediate area, so I can't wait to watch Hargrave fail just like he did at We Are Camp. He ruined that place (Windells and HCSC) and he is sure to ruin Bimberline.

I don’t have the summer pass but I’ve heard people saying it’s $25 extra per day to ride the pro park? Like fuck that, I’m sure most people just ski in and the rope workers are chill with it but damn

In the same position brother. I hiked up yesterday along the climbers trail trying my best to avoid being spotted by lift ops. Got to Palmer at like 1:45pm so pretty much last chair. People had been telling me that they werent checking for passes at Palmer but this guy instantly asked for my pass. I tried to keep my cool and explain I had left it on my vest in the park or sum but he wasn’t having it, luckily the homie working next to him vouched for me, but I have no clue who the guy was that said i was cool to go up. Shouts to that kid. But that kinda bummed me out for the rest of the day.


I’d say your best bet is to just hike all the way up to the pro park, rumor has it they don’t check for passes after 1:30 but I was tweaking about the lift op so I just hiked the rails. Pretty much everyone is hiking anyways since it’s mad crowded

If you are going to hike up, make sure to hike to the Pro park or old windells lane and get on the handle tow. They have been watching people hike uptown palmer and know when you don't have a pass (Duncan Pollard, EP's uncle knows every time when one the homies does not have a ticket and will call you out/ call the clacksamas sheriffs). The FTC opens to the public at 1:30, so you don't have to upgrade but you only get an hour an a half of riding the tow. In addition, you can ski right around the park entrance and no one will say a world to you unless its Tyler or Weasel.
