Mt. Hood Summer 2020

Timberline has given 0 information on both their spring pass this year as well as if there will be a summer season. Instead they have postponed events as far out as Labor Day.

I really don’t get how Timberline could miss out on an entire summer season. I feel like a ton of money they get comes from summer ski/snowboard camps as Timberline has the longest ski season in the US that I know of.

I’ve read articles that say Timberline has laid off as many as 430 employees. What the status is with whether or not those people will be reemployed I don’t know.

But if the States are starting to relax lockdowns (MN opening golf courses, boating, Florida opening beaches, NY and NJ opening up more essential activities, Idaho and Wyoming possibly opening nonessential businesses next week) why wouldn’t Timberline be open for skiing/snowboarding starting at the end of May/beginning of June?

Plus, i haven’t read them myself, but i have heard people say that studies have came out that the virus dies a lot faster in a sunny, warm environment.

I mean they could keep certain social distancing aspects as well. Possibly only allow 2 people on the chairs up Palmer (if Palmer isn’t fucking broken :/) and Magic Mile , makin sure they sit on opposite end stage of each other. You could have mandatory masks still, besides a lot of people are wearing something over their faces anyway to prevent major sunburn. And you could keep social distancing in the lodge itself, similar precautions grocery stores are taking back (plastic guards over ticket attendants, cashiers, tape on the ground marking out 6 ft of distance between people, etc,.).

I feel like it could totally be possible to have a summer season still. Timberline and it’s customers just need to follow precautions and be smart. That’s going to be how it is with every business and public place for quite a while I’m assuming.

IanAvery-Leafbump for a lil update. With walking the dogs everyday I’ve noticed people skiing/snowboarding at ski bowl pretty much every day that the weathers nice. I talked with two guys walking back out of the lot and they said apparently ski bowl is cool with it as long as you walk in from Govy, don’t drive in (both east and west parking lots are still closed/gated). Can’t tell from all the way down in town if the same is happening on Timberline but there were def skin tracks going up the glade trail until very recently. I still am unsure if Timberline can legally say no uphill travel now that its not operating? Same issues at Brighton in Utah where people were pointing out they have no right to restrict uphill travel since its all forest service land and Brighton is done operating for the season. Seems like a grey area, and of course it has to be low key and respectful to not ruin it for everyone

Parking at designated NFS sites is still closed, with the Timberline road/snow bunny/Mirror lake/trillium/tamanawas all still closed and empty, but driving by on Sunday the White River snow park had the sign clearly tossed aside 20+ ft from the road with the “closed” part faced towards the woods, and there was at least a dozen cars/RVs parked there, I’m assuming one of the hikers did that and not the Forest service

Really weird vibes right in Govy still. It’s as empty as I’ve ever seen it, even moreso than late October/Early November


Thanks for the update. Definitely a little jealous of people up in Brighton rn. Looks like upper bonezone is pretty much up and running.

yeah I wanna get some answers on the legality of skiing at Timberline, as far as I can tell its no different than Brighton yet they are adamant about no uphill travel...who is wrong here?

people are going stir crazy and need to ease back into safe recreation, and some nice corn harvesting on Palmer seems like a perfect low risk opertunity for that

I know people are doing it, I’ve walked past the skin track on the glade trail many times recently, what I’m curious about is the legality of it. Timberline and the Zig Zag NFS station are saying no, but I’m unsure if they even can claim that. If Timberline isn’t in operation, and its public land, then this is the same situation as all the debate surrounding Brighton, UT recently, which was determined that people can in fact hike/ski rn and Brighton can’t dictate any sort of uphill policy due to their operations being done. I don’t foresee anyone actually getting in legal trouble unless they’re a jackass, I’m just confused why NFS isn’t even clear about their own land...

no worries its good to get the word out as much as possible cuz it would suck to drive all the way up from Portland/HR only to be stopped right there. But don't worry the snow up at the lot isn't going away anytime soon, the snowline is still clinging onto Govy elevation rn, although its torrentially downpouring as I type :(

Don’t get too excited. It doesn’t say they are even going to open Timberline road for sure. Also it is not opening things up for camping.
Hopefully some good news but Timberline basically laid everybody off so not too optimistic about any lifts turning yet

HamezI think that you aren't grasping the concept of this whole ordeal.
This is far much more than a few hundred skiers and snowboards in a small area of America, borders have been closed between countries, not to mention continents.

Why on earth would this even be considered? The last thing that is going to be deemed acceptable or essential is a niche activity which will provide very little economic benefit to the country while risking prolonged months of restrictions.

Just chill out, relax and enjoy the spring summer warmer temperatures. Skiing has been cancelled this year.

ScootSkiLyfePeople couldn’t survive off of no income. Can you imagine how unhealthy people would become? People would be dying due to malnutrition and starvation and would have a way higher chance of becoming infected with COVID-19 or any other disease for that matter due to poor eating habits since they won’t have any fucking money to go buy food for their families, let alone the stress and insanity of being locked up. Mental health issues, suicides, alcoholism, abuse, all of it would be skyrocketing.

1 out of 7 children in the United States rely on their one meal a day at school for their main source of nutrition. What about them?

How can anyone think that a year-long lockdown would be a good idea?

Like I don’t know what to say at this point. Anyone with pre-existing health issues that they can’t control, I am sorry. This whole situation most be really scary for you. Anyone who is afraid for their grandparents, I can understand.

But like many people dying have smoked cigarettes their whole lives (which we have known is bad for you for quite some time), are obese (I know obesity can be related to mental health issues and it isn’t always a clear preventable thing), or they are just old and their bodies are already susceptible to disease.

A year-long lockdown isn’t a solution in my book or frankly I don’t think it’s a solution in anyone’s.

Didnt get one... but I’m saying that some corrupt politicians are socialist “extreme leftists”. It’s possible that if Trump wasnt in office and we had Hillary or someone else these stimulus checks wouldnt have existed. Yet thats a IF statement so cant be certain they wouldve acted differently.

There is a ski hill in MN opening this weekend just for a day. They are setting out features and you are allowed to hike.

Should we move the speed limits entirely? We saw what happened when Montana tried that, they went back to having them. Poor analogy. Reasonable speed limits exist for our safety and aren't unconstitutional. The same goes for lock downs and mask requirements and any other COVID related safety measures.

And there are reasonable exceptions to the lock down, so you have no point to make. There is no martial law, people can still go outside. There are reasonable precautions being taken.

Lack of martial law and being free to go outside is a pretty low bar to set. How exactly is forcing 30 million Americans into unemployment (as well as the myriad of other side-effects caused by the lockdown) considered reasonable?

Lockdown was meant to be a temporary, emergency response so that excess deaths would not occur AS A RESULT of an overwhelmed healthcare system. It's purpose was to buy time in order to prepare. It was never meant to eradicate the virus or ensure that no one dies or gets infected. It was never meant to be an indefinite shutdown and a heroic Hollywood style ending with a mystical vaccine (Which may never be developed). In what world does a virus that 99% of people survive merit a near-complete societal shutdown?

I like the sound of mitigation. Just got protect those old people and get them their groceries and shee! However people like my grandma are still gonna send it to Cosco mainly because they don’t want to be cooped up inside all day either

AND science is all about taking information, testing your assumptions, an modifying your behaviors. There are states in the US with less than 100 deaths and hundreds of thousands of unemployed.

That's good science? What kind of science balances economic v. health risk? Is that a black and white 'fact'?


Did you even read the article? Which scientists have been against the lockdown? Economic risk vs health risk is pretty clear - you can't work if you're dead. See the black death for economic impacts - in the end it actually worked out for the best, so maybe let's just sacrifice as much of the population as possible. In the long run, that'll work out for the economy!

Wow. Hopefully, the prevention of booking tickets more than 24 hours out prevents people from totally flocking and getting it shut down again. I'm psyched!

It seems to be working out pretty well. They have a high death rate, but their healthcare system is not overloaded and they have the potential to achieve herd immunity within weeks.

5/7/20- Sweeden has 2,941 deaths, Finland and Norawy combined have 468 deaths. Sweeden has a smaller population than Finland and Norway combined- Sweeden has 287 deaths/million and Finland Norway have 43 deaths/million. That's 669% higher! Your trolling looks pretty stupid.

Some of the early posters in this thread look pretty stupid too. Timberline is probably reopening soon, and it sounds like they will be doing so pretty intelligently with 24hr reservations. Way to go Oregon (26 deaths/million) and people in Oregon for putting in the work, staying home, and not dragging this out once your mission of flattening the initial curve was complete. Now it's just figuring out how to spread less germs while we return to the life we knew two months ago.

They all have less deaths. Norway, Finland, Denmark. I don't know what you're referring to, you brought up Netherlands as a comparison and it turns out they didn't lock down well either.

So the two countries that failed to properly lock down have similar death rates, while countries that did actually lock down have way lower! Yep. Way to back up your case.


Neither countries’ hospitals are overloaded and they’re going to achieve herd immunity in weeks. And they’re not fucking over their populace. We are going to have to deal with multiple waves of infections because we’re never going to build up immunity.
