So much hate. I love how there are people doing skilled labor making less than that.

Also I bet a bunch of the people campaigning because they can't live on minimum wage have iphones and data plans, and waste money on useless stuff. I can agree our economy is in the shitter, but come on.

If you don't think 8.75 is enough money, find another job or work your way up. People quit fast food jobs all the time. If you aren't useless and hang around for a while you'll move up. I'm not saying you're going straight to the top, but you can definitely work your way up. You might not get rich but you can make a little more $$$.

example: i grew up on the border with hood and my schools were half white kids from upper middle class and half black/mexican kids from the hood.

until the age of 14 i thought anytime that my parents bought me nike anything it was a huge deal. meanwhile the majority of black kids from the hood had name brand clothing and jordan shoes from kindergarten on up. my parents had a 10 year old camry and a 12 year old ford ranger. there were a number of hood mothers that drove escalades and navigators.


stupid people have stupid priorities. that is a big reason why stupid people are in the situations they are in financially. anyone can work hard, and most people do.

Agreed. It absolutely floors me even just to attempt to fathom that there are over 7 billion people out there with the same depth of character, feeling, and thought that I have. I won't say that most people don't think about that, but I rarely see that awareness demonstrated at all, let alone on a regular basis. If that notion doesn't humble you, or if you can just shrug that off, I think it's likely that you over-appreciate yourself. It's so easy to live life in the microcosms that we make for ourselves, where the scale of our life makes us feel important.

For sure off topic, but it most definitely applies to people on BOTH sides of this discussion.

Agreed. If people can't spend there money wisely they're going to waste it even if they get more. The cars kill me the most. The last thing a person in poverty should be buying is a new car. Unfortunately it's all too common.

Check out the balance sheet at the end - specifically the ratio of unsecured debt to income and liquid assets.

Aside from that, look at all the people complaining about being unable to raise kids given their income, unable to pay off their student loan debt. Look at all the people taking out loans for depreciable assets like cars for christ's sake.

Now I don't necessarily disagree with you about the issue - we seriously need to do something about income inequality, because the system is clearly rigged in favor of people who are lucky enough to be born into favorable circumstances. But I'm also saying that you have way too much faith in the financial integrity of the average American household.

Maybe we should stop pretending that people have some natural claim to a particular standard of living and instead acknowledge that it's in most people's interests, in the long run, to give it to them anyway.

I totally agree, coming from a pretty well off family, one thing i've always known is that charity and volunteer work is just something you do. And you shouldn't feel obligated to do it either, you should just do it because you know its the right thing to do. Some people walk around and act like the world was created for them and they don't owe it shit, and that probably bugs me the most out of anything I experience on a daily basis.

And I sympathize with that argument.

We can speculate over conflicting economic data all day long but in the end I think people will remain divided on philosophical grounds. I mean, do we have an ethical obligation to ensure the wellbeing of others, or do we take on a more Darwinistic stance?* It's a question with no answer.

*I think it's interesting how the U.S. is culturally founded on principles of naturalistic rights. That is, that every person naturally possesses rights and that the bill of rights does not give us rights, but outlines which of our rights (which we already posses) cannot be violated. Yet our economic structure is purportedly and unapologetically "meritocratic" in that the only birthrights any individual have are death and argument.

If your anti-socialist party does take back control, please instruct them to do away with all of the tax-payer-funded nonsense as well: police, firefighters, FBI, CIA, FDA, retirement safety, public schools, public transportation, public libraries, postal service, garbage disposal, roads, sewer systems, snow removal, disaster relief, banking deposit insurance, state-funded tuition assistance, public parks, national monuments, farm subsidies etc. etc...

Nothing wrong with 2 jobs but if you are trying to do manual labor for 70 hours a week there is a good chance all of the work you do is shit.

I use to deliver furniture for $6.50/hr before the wage increase Back in HS I was not lazy and nothing about moving furniture is lazy.

Well, given that the buying power that minimum wage has today, it should be near $12 an hour according to the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development.

the smart migrant worker who has done it for a while becomes a foreman and makes quite a bit more than minimum wage. back in highschool you were both dumb AND new to the workforce. Like i said in the post you quoted, the fat dude working 40 hours behind a computer is not a hard worker IMO. But he is likely pretty darn smart and has been in the workforce for a while so he deserves a MUCH higher wage.

I think it's really stupid to think that every migrant worker can become a foreman. not everyone can be a manager....

data entry doesn't require any significant intelligence. Neither does picking beets, Both are entry level. The differenice is one effects the individuals health significantly more than the other, yet the more unhealthy and necessary position pays less because a "stupid" person will do it.

Another point i would like to make is that intelligent people tend to be much more responsible with their money and "stupid" people are frivolous with their money like you mentioned. Wouldn't it make sense to pay "stupid" people more knowing that they tend to spend more when they make more? wouldn't more people with more money = more spending and a more stimulated economy?

you are right! not every migrant worker is smart enough to become foreman, or learn english and transition into another field(pun not intended) here in the US. Nor are stupid people very good with money choices. Thats life. we shouldnt be rewarding those people with more money. they are deserving of the lowest possible salaries in our workforce. If they are not, who is?

You are taking everything i say literally and not seeing the generalized meaning of things. No, i dont mean that literally someone is stupid... i mean they lack the necessary intelligence to rise above. No i dont mean someone is actually lazy... i mean they lack the necessary work ethic to rise above. Its just easier to simply write down buzzwords when on an internet ski forum talking socioeconomic policy.

I dont make a ton of money(relatively), but yes i am very smart. The lazy part is what is holding me back now...

Not trying to completely nitpick because you have some decent points but the whole "work ethic" thing is bothering me. Work ethic does not solely determine how far you make it in life. There are people with amazing work ethic that will never hold even a managerial position. There are millions of Americans that bust ass for shit money and still live below the poverty line. Why should they be limited to $8 an hour? Just because they didn't attend a shitty state university and get a water-downed degree? Why should they be limited to a wage that fails to rise properly against the cost of inflation? You mentioned (I think it was you) that someone has to work the shit jobs. Well can't those shit jobs at least pay a livable wage? And don't say they do now because they absolutely don't. $7 an hour isn't livable by any developed country standard. Earlier in my life I worked at Staples and made $7.80. That is absolutely not a livable wage, not when you have to pay monthly rent, utilities, food, and other expenses.

This argument is bullshit. Half of you are just blaming people who work minimum wage jobs for being lazy or "not intelligent" with literally no backing. The other half is saying those same people should be paid a little more. Obviously there are fractures in both arguments but thats the general sense of where this discussion has gone and where it's going. And I feel a lot of the former have grown up with certain entitlements the latter have not.

I get it, the world is full of shit jobs and someones gotta do them but when the shit jobs can barely put food on the table and give people in a developed country a lifestyle that you would normally see in a developing country, thats where I have a problem. I don't think the majority of people advocating for a pay raise want or care to see $15/hour, but an increase is more than reasonable to ask for. Also, $15/hour now =/= $15/hour 10, 15, 20, etc. years ago....

I've been a line cook and I've been a ski tech. Being a Ski tech is one of the laziest/mindless jobs a stoner can get. its REALLY easy. Way way easier than cooking.

How much cheaper can lettuce and chicken actually get? Healthy food is not expensive, vegetables are extremely cost effective unless you go to Whole Foods and willingly pay 10x more to be pretentious. This argument always baffles me.

Have you guys actually gone to a fast food place recently by the way? It is NOT cheap. A meal is only a dollar or two shy of some great sit down options. Unless you are a dedicated dollar menu person, you are flushing serious cash making it a habit of grabbing boring food.
