Knuckling: Easing the pain?

So, we've all been there. You pop off a kicker and realize mid air that you don't have the speed and you're just not gonna make it. In that situation, is there anything you could do to ease the pain of casing?

I'm sure it depends on a lot of things, but generally speaking, is there any way to make it hurt less? Is there an ideal way to fall? Anything to avoid at all costs? etc.

I'm amazed no one has suggested this et but one of the best ways to help the impact on hard landings will be good custom footbeds and boots which fit well. If you have an appropriate custom footbed that will aid the feet in taking the impact and will stop things like toe bang which can happen when the arches collapse under load.

Anyone ever case/overshoot a jump and the force of the impact very literally forces shit out of you? You land and get to the bottom and immediately have to shit.

If you stay calm in the air try to ease your skis down like your tail tapping something. If you are close to the landing you might be able to slide on the tails a little bit and bring it down on the landing but if not let your tails touch first bring them down and absorb the impact by bending knees. As they said above don't fight it and don't smash your teeth or chin off your knees. If you understand what I'm saying to do it eases the pain and it looks pretty cool if you ride it away if it doesn't work for you don't hate it works for me.

Pull some kind of delorme shit and land on your tails while flexing and butter your way to the landing

old mogul skiing trick my coaches told me about. Drive your nose into the ground so it absorbs a shit ton of energy, just like in moguls when you drive your tips down into the trough. This has saved me from serious damage. If you are really good at it, then you don't even get shinbang and you ride it out like nothing happened. People are saying to use your tails, but that could just give you mad shinbang and give you a gnarly backslap. I wouldn't recommend that over dropping your tips if you don't have to

How do you do this without falling and landing on your face? Or do you just stay upright and like you are landing normal as much as possible and hook back your knees? Don't see how your knees would be strong enough for a heavy landing if they were bent so that the tips would hit first.

1. Identification - Identify the knuckle approaching sooner than expected.
2. Acceptance - Accept the hand that fate has dealt you, but also think about what you could do better next time.
3. Preparation - Prepare for impact by relaxing your legs and visualizing your happy place.
4. Touchdown - Absorb the impact with your legs--I prefer to crumple backwards and risk being sodomized by my heel piece than to crumple forward and risk my face meeting my knees (although you don't always have a choice).
5. Claim It - Yell an obscenity or unintelligible noise of your choice, just so everyone knows that you didn't mean to knuckle the jump.

Yea you hook your knees more or less. I know it sounds unconventional but i have used it and seen it used to prevent hard casings. This technique isn't for serious undershoots though, just coming up short by a little.

So true! Knuckled a landing in Val D'Isere last christmas, big toe nail got wedged in the dropkicks.. and pow! Ripped clean off! Grown a new one now though so sall good.. I named him Phil
