No not Archers ISIS, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, a bastard child of al-Qaeda. ISIS has been fighting in Syrria for years and carved out a nice chunk of it for themselves, now their venturing into Iraq and crushing the outgunned Iraq security forces. They've captured a good chunk of Iraq and Mosul, the second largest city. This is just really sad, all the lives lost and time spent trying to make something outa the Iraq invasion, and now its all going to shit again. Also make's me a bit mad, I know the situation was terrible and pulling the troops out made sense, but the Iraq security forces did clearly not have proper training/command/infrastructure and all the other things that caused it to collapse like a wet tissue paper when it came up against ISIS. Now these poor fucks are gonna be rounded up and executed by some twisted extremist, if they haven't already ditched all their gear like half the damn force by now. Its depressing to think the same things probably gonna happen in Afghanistan.

I don't think their too far gone, the majority of people don't wan't to be ruled by some extremists like ISIS. If the invasion of Iraq hadn't been totally fucked from the start it could have worked. Imagine if they had talked and worked with the Iraqy army, instead of disbanding it and leaving thousand of trained Iraqi soldiers with no jobs (heelloo insurgency) and then pissing the whole population off by killing civilians, and the all the Blackwater bullshit. The current Iraq security force is just garbage, giving them some Humvee's,rifles and slapping a uniform on em doesn't make them soldiers.

What would you have changed about the invasion? Bush handled it as well as any president could have. We were just attacked by those sandy bastards and we had to fight back. Invading Iraq the way we did was the only sensible option

what are you talking about kid...? when did iraq "those sandy bastards" attack the US? you ignorant fuck, we're not talking about afghanistan here. if you recall, you were prolly 5 yrs old at the time but, the us invaded iraq in early 2003 when the us and uk claimed iraq had WMD's, despite the UN weapon inspectors stating they had disbanded their nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons programs in the 90's. further there was a belief that Sadam was harboring al'Qaeda which is possible, but no evidence was ever found to support that claim. the war was entirely bush and cheney's aggression as they bypassed congress, did not ever declare war, and used the rally around the flag effect to convince enough ignorant people that Sadam posed a threat to the US interests to support the war. the Iraq war not a "sensible option," it was a hawkish mistake, and exemplifies why people around the world generally dislike americans, and hate our government.

Im not trolling. The Iraqi people are lucky we invaded when we did. Do you know how many innocent civilians we saved from being murdered by muslim extremists. They existed, it's just a fair amount of it wasn't actually in weapon form, or it was exported to Syria right before the invasion....

But this is bad, because the Jihadis in Syria are very likely to ply their trade worldwide now. this is because the jihad in Iraq and more so, Syria, is comprised of people from all over the world, building contacts and networking.

Essentially the Caliphate could stand a chance of coming back, something that has not existed for ages.

2012-2014 has been much like 2003-2005. The removal of the stabilizing power with various tribal and religious factions competing for power and security.

Unfortunately the American people never came to terms with what it would take to remove Sadam and install a stable and relatively pro west government.

Issues lie with SecDef Rummi and his crew of morons being utterly inept to President Obama wanting nothing to do with the war and opting for the easy and popular option.
It also does not help that most Americans have no real concept of Islam as an idiology and how fucked and complicated it is.

Isnt a huge part of the problem also a result of the fact that our plans for Saddam's fall did not really pan out...if they even planned well for a country devoid of critical infrastructure and a conscripted and deeated army out of work?

First off, stop the rampant growth and corruption of the Private Military Company's involvement in Iraq (Hey look at that, no Baghdad shooting, and possibly Fallujah wouldn't have turned into an entire city of insurgents). Don't put people who have huge connections to company's who are being given military contracts in charge of handing out said military contracts. Use all the muns not being siphoned away to fund legit reconstruction stuff. Also approach the Commanders of Iraq's army as soon as it was over, try to work things out. In general try to be nicer to the population. Whoo captain hindsight's here

It was for the liberation of Iraq, or at least that's what it ended up being. I usually never support any type of war or physical force to solve an issue, but in the extreme case of Iraq and Saddam Hussein, it was time that that appalling situation which had lasted decades was brought to a close. Don't get me wrong; there were blunders and momentous fuck-ups and an immense amount of money completely wasted, and of course many innocent lives lost, but Saddam and his empire were removed, and I think the bush administration deserves more credit for that than they're getting.

true, Saddam did attempt genocide at one point on his own people, and they did plenty of fucked up things. BUT, he helped keep the region stable to an extent

Dude the Islamic extremist groups are all on the social media, of course they have a twitter. If you got to their website's you can find some lovely video's of them executing people too.
Here's the latest video of them on youtube, showing off all the cool stuff they got from Mosul, including what looks like a couple friggin M777 howitzers. And their on their way to Baghdad now..fucking christ

It wasn't an attempt, he did successfully commit genocide against his own people. The Anfal campaign caused an estimated 180,000 deaths, during which Saddam used chemical weapons against the city of Halabja in one of the most awful attacks of its kind. It was a straight up purge of the Kurdish "problem" from Iraq. That's a pretty clear-cut case of genocide, and only a fraction of the terror and fear he caused and spread during his reign too, which, might I add, is not what I would consider as helping to keep a region stable. He, and his fascist regime, absolutely 100% needed to be removed. Pure, unadulterated evil.

I've been reading up lately on this sort of proposal and what it implies. Hannah Arendt gives some accurate insight. She raises the question about whether evil is radical or just a by-product of thoughtlessness; radical evil being evil so evil it basically continues it's cycle, willingly or unwillingly, until it eventually destroys itself. It's made its point, there's nothing else to prove, but it's so committed to what it's doing it just can't stop, almost as if it's consciously developed an appetite for it, even if it knows it will in the end bring repercussions. It's weird, trying to get into the mind of sadists and evil and breaking down their thought processes. Slightly off topic, but w/e - fascinating subject, Immanuel Kant is another one to check out

This is why I have stopped caring what happens to Iraq. We cannot stay there forever and they will NEVER be ready to stand on their own. Honestly if they STILL need a babysitter, maybe they should call Saudi Arabia. Wee need to go- Iraq's parents said they'd be home by 9pm and that was like 5 years ago. We've got shit to do.

Just over 1000 years ago, Baghdad was the intellectual centre of the world, predominantly for science. Civilizations and cultures and empires rise and fall, and to say so confidently that Iraq won't and can't function independently, or even rise back to the great heights it was once at is not only short- and narrow-sighted, but plain untrue. They obviously have a long way to go, though.

Then they went in on the basis of some guy that no other intelligent agency in the world thought was reliable. Now were still having the effects of that war to this day. The Bush administration handled that so poorly and it could have been done better. But that being said more troops have died under Obama's watch than George Bush.
