No not Archers ISIS, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, a bastard child of al-Qaeda. ISIS has been fighting in Syrria for years and carved out a nice chunk of it for themselves, now their venturing into Iraq and crushing the outgunned Iraq security forces. They've captured a good chunk of Iraq and Mosul, the second largest city. This is just really sad, all the lives lost and time spent trying to make something outa the Iraq invasion, and now its all going to shit again. Also make's me a bit mad, I know the situation was terrible and pulling the troops out made sense, but the Iraq security forces did clearly not have proper training/command/infrastructure and all the other things that caused it to collapse like a wet tissue paper when it came up against ISIS. Now these poor fucks are gonna be rounded up and executed by some twisted extremist, if they haven't already ditched all their gear like half the damn force by now. Its depressing to think the same things probably gonna happen in Afghanistan.

las.Just over 1000 years ago, Baghdad was the intellectual centre of the world, predominantly for science. Civilizations and cultures and empires rise and fall, and to say so confidently that Iraq won't and can't function independently, or even rise back to the great heights it was once at is not only short- and narrow-sighted, but plain untrue. They obviously have a long way to go, though.

I'm not sure what's funny about what I wrote, but anyone with half a brain and a very basic understanding of general history will know what I wrote is true. People from the East were the first to have universities that practised science by use of facts and logic. An Arabian alchemist laid the foundations for modern chemistry. An Islamic mathematician gave us the first books on algebra and algorithms, and also popularized the use of Hindu-Arabic numerals we use today. A Persian philosopher gave us the Canon of Medicine. An Iraqi polymath gave us Optometry. Etc, etc. In other words, they were once well ahead of the West in intellectual progress. Like I said, civilizations rise and fall; it's the circle of life. Once again, there's no reason for Iraq or any of it's neighbours to not restore themselves to their former glory

I disagree. Multi year US presence in Iraq ended up polarizing and making more extremists than there would have been if they had just gone in, killed Saddam, and left within a year of that.

Look at the data on violence, bombings, deaths, etc. by month from July 2003 to Dec 2011.
Look at when Al-Qaeda in Iraq started to get big, when they were competing with JAM. What was ISIS's presence in 2010 and 2011 compared to where it is now?

Don't underestimate the will of the Iraqi population, especially after what they've endured for all those years. Theres that and the fact that this could very well start WWIII. Especially if the US decides to intervene, which means we'd be fucking allies with Iran of all countries. If that happened than all eyes would be on Saudi Arabia who will ultimately have the final say in how big this thing escalates into. The King of Saudi Arabia is 90 years old so he's on his way out. Depending on what he wants his final act to be or what his succorer is like in terms of his politics, Saudi Arabia could very well retaliate against Iran for helping the Shiites in Iraq. Iran, being a country heavily dominated by Shiite muslims, is Saudi Arabia's rival because Saudi Arabia is 90% Sunni FYI. Thats something very important to know when looking at this whole situation.

Iran will never allow ISIS or any Sunni's for that matter control Iraq after what they went through with Sadam. Plus the country on their opposite border is pretty much controlled by Sunni Al Qaeda and Taliban members so theres no way Iran will allow themselves to be put in that sort of situation.

This sucks because I, as Im sure many of you, feel that the ISIS won't go down without a fight to the death. Diplomatic resolutions seem like a very far fetched solution here. With that, Iraq probably will be three different countries this time next week.

The ISIS is no joke and are super organized. They're represented by dozens of countries, including many in Europe. It was reported that there are as many as 500 Brits fighting with the ISIS. They also break there platoons in to what countries there members are from so all those Brits are fighting together. This should scare the shit out of Europeans because this allows them to organize while in Iraq or Syria and then meet back up in the home countries. They also became the richest terrorist organization in the world pretty much over night through some huge bank heist I guess.

funny you bring up the fossil fuel industry and its shortcomings blame it on the "liberals," when big oil spends about $350 million in lobbying, most of which goes to republican candidates, to receive in return $20 billion in federal subsides. Spark Notes: big oil controls congress and in effect prevents any progressive progress, by forcing their republican puppets to act in their interests.

The oil companies lobbying for Republicans has to do with us being dependent on foreign resources via liberal policies. I think you're confused there bud. Oil companies would love to drill here and build things like the keystone pipeline. They can't though because of the fetish liberals have with putting red tape over everything because you've all have become brain washed by some absurdly false data composed by bureaucracies like the EPA. The US is a net energy exporter.
The price of energy is only going up. It makes sense to buy others energy now at the current price and then sell them ours at a higher price latter. It is immature thinking to tap our energy resources now so that we can buy energy from other countries at a higher price now.
The 'drill baby, drill' mantra was more about being abrasive than it was about common sense.

On a side note, Bin Laden himself said that US could actually eliminate jihad if we really wanted to. He said we'd just have to the patience to which we obviously don't. O agree with him to. The minute we stop fighting extreme Islam is the minute it starts growing again. I honestly am not shocked at all with this. I would not be surprised if this happened in Afghanistan in 10-20 years down the line either. While I was never happy about the Iraq war, I always believed it was wrong to pullout until they were firmly on their feet, and I feel the same way about Afghanistan. Unfortunately, politicians do not.

It's pretty funny how ridiculous some of the posts are in this thread. As far as invasions go, whether you are for them or against them, they don't get any better than the invasion of Iraq. It was quick and the number of American casualties were minimal.

Our military definitively proved that a small, well trained and maneuverable force is highly effective in an invasion. Once the enemy forces have been neutralized, you move into a different phase. You are no longer an invasion force, you are an occupation force. An occupation needs way more people than an invasion force, because they are a peace keeping force. They have to guard and secure facilities.

We got an A+ on our invasion and a D- on the occupation. Security forces weren't moved in quick enough and with enough numbers to secure weapons stores and other facilities. We paid dearly for that mistake, because all those weapons were converted into IEDs and used on our troops.

The blame for that falls completely on the shoulders of Rumsfeld for continuing to insist on keeping the occupation force small, despite what all the ranking officers were saying; and on George Bush for going along with Rumsfeld. If the transition from invasion force to occupation force had gone smoother and the occupation force had been significant enough, we would not be discussing this now.

As to topic, whether you agree that the U.S. should have invaded Iraq or not, allowing what is happening to continue is like pissing on the graves of all the soldiers who died there.

I hate Monday morning quarterbacks, but the thing I hate worse is when leaders are in denial about a crisis and are incapable of seeing an obvious way out. This has happened under the past 2 administrations.

I'm aware my state is a piece of shit, that's why I plan on moving south like my neighbors just did. But the NW part of CT isn't a piece of shit compared to all the cities and shit in the rest of the state.


First off, your profile says you live in Granby. Granby is NO WAY UNDER THE SUN considered true NWC. Litchfield County is the NWC. Hartford County, is Hartford County.

It's lines in the sand, but I grew up in Litchfield County and we always took the county to be the end all be all of NWC. Call it hometown pride. I grew up in Warren/Cornwall area. We would have called Granby north central or just Hartford County. But it's whatever.

Lol I know what you mean, I'm in NWC more than I am in hartford county, i go to school in winsted and spend alot of time in winchester, barkhamsted, and work in new hartford. all in northwest CT. I don't like being refered to as hartford country, Fuck Hartford.

The way you're talking about joining the army and your strange and disturbing hopes of killing your fellow human being so casually makes you come off as very insecure and thuggish, and I can imagine that barbaric way of thinking is only going to cement itself and blossom once you surround yourself with people who act and think the same way. Who and what do you actually think you're fighting for if you were to go over to the middle east? That's a legitimate question, I'm just curious if you even understand what the authentic purpose of an occupation over there, that you would be a part of, would be.
