CR Johnson has Passed Away

I just got a text message. Apparently CR hit his head on a rock while skiing Headwall (Squaw) this morning and has passed away. I will keep this thread updated with details as I get them.

this made me so sad when i got a text wile skiing 8 inches of fresh, i didnt even want to ski anymore. RIP a true fucking legend.

yeah as bad as it sounds it is true... I'm from south lake and all the skiers are talking about it. Horrible loss. not only did we lose shane there but now CR. both amazing skiers that will never be forgotten but will always be missed.

Absolutely unbelievable...His 7 Sunny Days Segment immediately popped into my head. The irony, while sad, is admirable in a very true way..Soo much respect for what he went through and for how he rebounded so heroically...RIP Dude

When I first saw that segment it changed the way I look at skiing too. I remember showing my friends who don't even ski that segment and they thought it was inspirational. He made me realize to just have as much fun as you can skiing and to never take things for granted. It's crazy that he passed today, especially at his home mountain that he knows better than anyone. So weird that he had to die there when he's skied countless avalanche prone backcountry spots and steeps in AK.

Just the motivation one person can have... that drive he has inside him pretty much inspired me to just push all the time. how he came back from that head injury, having to learn all the basics again....

I dont know.. for me it just flicked a switch inside me... hard to explain. But it definatly helped influenced how I am today.

C.R. Johnson, 26, was skiing with a group of friends when he fell while trying to negotiate a "very, very tight, rocky area," said Jim Rogers, a member of the Lake Tahoe-area resort's ski patrol.

He fell face-first, then spun around and struck the back of his head on rocks. Johnson was wearing a helmet, but Rogers said the helmet took a serious blow.

Ski patrol members were called shortly before 2 p.m. but were unable to revive him. Placer County Sheriff's Lt. Jeff Ausnow said Johnson died on the slopes.

Rogers said Johnson was skiing recreationally with friends and not as part of a competition when he lost his balance on the steep slope in a part of the resort known as the Light Towers area.

"This is a man of very, very strong skiing talent," Rogers said. "This young man had been a fixture here at Squaw Valley for years. ... He grew up at Squaw Valley."
