CR Johnson has Passed Away

I just got a text message. Apparently CR hit his head on a rock while skiing Headwall (Squaw) this morning and has passed away. I will keep this thread updated with details as I get them.

Cr Johnson often emulated never duplicated. +++Vibes to the friends and family as I'm sure everyone is feeling crushed. My favourite memories of him go back to the days of 13 and his first 1440's and early X-games in San Fran.

So I never knew CR myself. I knew a few people that did. ( I am not going to name drop). I was at Loveland when the Oakley Tour came thru a few years ago. I met up with one of the Oakley skiers later that evening and a girl I met on the mountain. Long story short, the girl told the skier that she had just spoke with CR. She was so happy and her face was full of happiness when she said it. You can tell CR brought joy and happiness to everyone he knew. I wish I had the honor to know him, even to have met him.

How horrendous is this for Jt holmes. He stood ontop the cliff with Shane last spring the day he died and now rode up the chairlift only to watch another friend die right in front of him.

Skier C.R. Johnson, a U.S. Open champion and X Games medalist recognized as a halfpipe specialist and one of freeskiing’s most renowned competitors, was killed Wednesday afternoon while skiing at Squaw Valley USA, resort officials have confirmed.Witnesses reported that Johnson, a 26-year-old Lake Tahoe native and Freeride team member, got caught on some exposed rocks while skiing the Light Towers area, Squaw Valley spokeswoman Amelia Richmond said in a released statement.

Johnson had initiated his first turn and fell downhill, Richmond said. He hit several rocks before coming to rest several hundred yards below the ridge.

Witnesses immediately notified ski patrol and medical personnel arrived on the scene within minutes. Despite efforts to revive Johnson, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, he succumbed to his injuries, Richmond said.

The Light Towers area is expert terrain located up the ridge line from the Cornice II lift at Squaw Valley.

“CR has been part of the Squaw Valley family since birth and will be greatly missed,” Richmond said. “The loss of CR will deeply affect not only the local skiing community but skiers worldwide.

“Our condolences go out to his friends and family.”

Johnson, who suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2005, had made slow and steady progress over the past few winters and was reportedly skiing strongly this year, ESPN reported.

after McConkey I didn't know if my heart could bare anymore. This is quuite a test. Love and praise his family and friends right now. Hall must be besides himself. thats it, i'm a Smokin a spliff for them both. Sometime God needs the best of us @ unexpected times for his special projects. Im not even religious, but im certain thats the case. LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE & PRAISE. guys, lets take care of ourselves.

wow I cant beleive this, first shane now CR! when I think back to my early times in skiing I remember who my idols were and these two guys were in the top 3. its so sad to see someone you look up to pass away, but two! I cant immagine what friends and family are going through, especialy since they had friends in common and those guys must be feeling it pretty bad. I realy feel for these people, friends and family, this is such a sad time for skiing.

god damn, CR you will be missed.  what an inspirational person, was so stoked to see him lay down a sick run at the line catchers last month, had not to enjoy every moment we ever got to experience from that dude. RIP

You know, 100% of NewSchoolers says that they'd like to die skiing and if they couldn't ski they'd rather die. But of the 100% that say that probably less than 1% mean it. CR was one of the <1% that truly meant it. RIP CR
