ON3P received demand to change name of “Great Scott”

This post is meant to inform anyone who has to date purchased a “Great Scott” ski from ON3P, or those who are considering a future purchase.  In late October, ON3P received a cease and desist order from SCOTT USA Ltd., and its affiliates SCOTT Sports SA and SCOTT USA Inc., demanding ON3P immediately cease commercialization and sales of all “Great Scott” branded skis for reasons of  trademark infringement. 

We are current exploring the legality of the use of “Scott” in the name of our ski “Great Scott” and should reach a decision in the near future.

Once we have reached a decision, I will post an update on the matter.

Im tempted to email my uncle about the case and see what he has to say.. Hes a huge lawyer in the state of MN. Im also going to see what he has to say about the WME Level 1 law suit. Hes a defense attorney though so we'll see what he knows about trademark infrigment..

And correct me if i'm wrong. But isn't the phrase "Great Scott" like a legitimate phrase? Then seriously it will not be aloud to be trademarked in any way. So Scott is double butt raping themselves here.

this thread pisses me off for a number of reasons. when WME was in the process of suing Level 1 the community on NS was pissed, and for good reason. but now when SCOTT USA does the same thing (pushes the little guy around) there is not that much action against SCOTT USA. they did just sign Tom Wallisch but that should have nothing to do with the fact that SCOTT USA is suing ON3P for a shitty reason. NS needs to put Wallisch aside and decide what is best for the tight-knit skiing community and take action.

just as i did with WME i sent a very polite email that expressed my view on the matter. and i encourage everyone to do the same. GO ON3P!!!

Although I agree with you, I can understand why it isn't blowing up like WME v. Level 1. It is just as great of a travesty though. People on this site are just not as affected by this case. I'm going to guess that more people purchase level 1 products versus scott or ON3P skis combined. (I'm just talking movie vs skis not poles or other stuff). I hate it when the big corporation bullies small companies. I have even one more reason to buy ON3P's next year. Support small companies yo!!!

That and WME wasnt as associated with newschool skiing as Scott is, I mean the article of Scott sighning wallnuts essentially came out right before this.

i think a big thing here is to take wallisch out of the picture. kids shouldnt shape their opinions because of the signing. this is still another level 1 vs WME abomination and it should be treated as such.

im not trying to make tom look like the bad person, he just works for them. you dont think any of the money scott makes from lawsuits just like this isnt going towards the riders down the line?
i agree this is a bullshit lawsuit, it just came about at the wrong time and im sure there going to loose a few customers because of it.

IDEA! I can't find the picture, and my Photoshop skills are horrid, but someone should photoshop the photo of Wallisch wearing the shirt of a kid peeing on WME. I am not saying what you should photoshop it into, but it could be pretty epic.

I'm not saying he did anything bad. He didn't at all actually, just shitty timing. But we all know he obviously wouldn't be for something like this. A photoshop wouldn't really fuck up an entire sponsorship I believe.

It wouldn't fuck up his sponsorship, but it would be poking fun at someone who is completely innocent and not a part of the matter at all.

leave Tom out of this. Nobody at ON3P thinks he should be, or wants him to be dragged into this, and I'm sure he doesn't either. If the HR(?) guy didn't know, how would he? So let's make sure it doesn't happen.

If not for the fact that this decision was probably made by some guy in an office building in central Europe who can't understand why anyone would ever want to ski backwards, I'm sure they would have seen this coming.

i'd be very surprised if the decisions of Scott USA were made by anyone in europe. just so you know, the obsession with suing people is very much a pillar of CORPORATE AMERICA. thankfully this kind of mindset is not nearly so prevalent this side of the pond.

This.  I could see where people not as savvy about ski products might buy the ON3P's ski thinking that they were buying a product made by Scott.  Everything's tight right now and everyone is fighting for market share so they can stay in business.  Scott may be bigger than ON3P, but it is hardly an industry giant.  I may get slammed for this, but I like pretzel's analogy.  No hate towards ON3P, but I think this was a mistake on their part.

the armada analogy is not a good one.

armada is not someone's name it is a trademark. Scott on the other hand cannot be trademarked because it is someone's name.

and no anyone who knows about on3p would not think they are buying SCOTT skis. Skis are expensive things and people don't just buy them. they research what they are going to buy. or at least they should.

As much as this annoys me what scott did, i have scott gloves and scott poles and also have some scott goggles but i am selling them. so i will continue to use them, but i usually go nopoles so it doesnt matter to much. AND i cant exactly afford new gloves right now so.
