Help: The shin bang is still here...

Before anyone says there are tons of threads about this, listen:

Shin bang is different for everyone.

My shin bang started the first year i bought my Technica Agent 80's. This was 2 years ago. I have been to the doctors, and they told me Shin bang=Shin splints. Of course i knew this already. So he told me to rest my shins and take it easy. So i did. By the time ski season came back along i was feeling better. The second day i went skiing...it was back. I put up with it for the rest of last year. Its summer now and i still feel the shin bang. i can run my fingers along my shin and point out the quarter size spot on my shin where i feel the pain. I have tried lots of stuff to ease my pain, i tried booster straps, the eliminator, i even had my boots modified to have more flex in them. but this was all to no avail.

So my bottom line is, what do you recommend? i tried on the 2011 SPK's and they hurt more than my old boots haha

im guessing alot of you are going to say full tilts right?

I find it pretty weird how shin bang differs among skiers. for example i have almost zero shin bang, while a buddy of mine has constant shin bang no matter what boots he has.

just bare through it through the next year or two and then your shins will build up calcium deposits and it will no longer be an issue...but more importantly, just get out of the damn backseat.

They do for some people. Go to a boot fitter. Get the best fit.

I didn't, i went straight into fulltilts. Turns out my ankle calf area is to big for them. They hurt me more then anything this season and are selling them right now.

GO TO A BOOT FITTER

honestly. the shin bang gets so bad where it hurts to walk. leaning forward would not do anything for me but i appreciate the input.

yes they do, but i agree with I.B. cuz they vary with ppl and u should deffs go to a boot fitter. i got a pair towards the end of the season and my shin bang started to go away but i began to get toe bang which i have never had before. it wasn't bad toe bang but it was just an odd feeling. if u have wide feet full tilts probs wouldn't be good because they're more for thin feet but it doesn't hurt to go to dealer and try em on. good luck with the problem bro. i hope u find a way out

I had really bad bang over the past years. Got some fulltilts molded to my feet and it helped a bit but it was still there enough to cause discomfort.
I thought wearing more socks would help, but what i found was when i wear super thin ankle socks when i ski, it almost completely eliminates shin bang. This may not work for you, but is something to think about trying

all my life i used calf high smart wool socks. i have a ton of no-show socks but i dont see how it would make a difference?

well a week and a half ago I skied, landed back seat, got the worst shin bang I ever had, then had to limp for about 5 days, went skiing again this Sunday, it definitely still hurt, but I just took it easy. I can still feel it in my leg, I think I just pulled a muscle.

I'm going on my third year riding full tilts and I mean if i've had a rough day then I'll get some shin bang but wicked less than I did with my old boots. In my opinion full tilts are a lot easier on my shins. Even if I do get shin bang it's only the slightest.

Oh and btw, If i haven't skiied in a while and then go back my full tilts hurt like a mother fucker for like an hour but then they're fine.

I thought the same thing. honestly, i forgot my regular ski socks that day so had to go with the ankles, they just felt really good. I would guess that this helps because there is less room between my shin and the top of the boot now? when they molded my boot they had me wear the thinnest of thin socks, so i guess it makes sense.
I would try it out, if it doesnt work your back where you started, but its something you can try to help troubleshoot your problem

I skied with a kid who used foam between shin and boot. He said it worked quite well.

My old Swiss coach once cut the liner where some girl had a pressure point. It worked, but I wouldnt do that if I were you.

get some full tilts the comfortable, sick and help prevent shin bang because the whole boot moves when u land because its three pieces

i feel u man. im still struggling.

as for skiing, i would recommend some full tilts or dabellos, something that flexes well, maybe a softer boot, that fits your foot and flexes in a way that doesn't fuck up your shins. (like shittay spk's)

As for healing them, ice, rest, do strengthening exercises such as heel walk/toe tap and alphabets. get orthodox/arc support in your shoe so when you walk around & try to stay away from sports that are heavy on your shins like running, basketball, etc. Also, stretch your ankles & calves, because your body works together; everything has to be strong & limber.

Just stay consistent with all this stuff and if they don't improve in a few weeks at all go to a specialist or a body worker.

rub a ski pole up and down your shin. it hurts super bad at first but it helps to massage it like that, along with icing and strengthening and stuff. it doesn't completely solve the problem but it makes it feel a lot better temporarily.

I get it super bad when I wear thick wool socks, but when I wear the super thin wool/nylon ski socks I have nothing. Go thinner. Thicker=more material pressuring your bone.

thanks for all the advice. do you think that arch supports in my boot would help? it would take the pressure off the specific point im getting my shin bang wont it?

Definitely go with the booster straps. If you do happen to go to a boot fitter, they should be able to mold you some custom insoles as well, hence more arch support, I can't say for sure that it would take pressure off of your shin, but it is never a bad Idea.

i had it bad too, so i heard that tightening your boots works so i did that for half the season, and it didnt work, it actually got wayyyyy worse so i put my power strap or whatever you call it looser and my top buckle abit looser and BAM it was gone.

Your doctor is fucking high. Shinsplints is caused by dmage to your bone due to impact were the force originates at the heel going up the leg. Your shin bang is most likely either: a. You need to stob landing backseat. Or b. Your boots don't fit.

I think Ive had one of the worst cases of shin bang as I couldnt even put my boots on it was that bad...
Heres my quick overview,
I did fucked mine in December, I took it easy for the season and had my shins isotope bone scanned in March and there was still thousands of micro fractures.
I haven't riden since, and am focussed on getting strong for this season.
My shins are now good, but not ready to ride yet, so I took this time to work out why I got this problem.
Number 1, I had been sold the wrong boots. My boots were 27.5 and I am actually a 26. Lots of movement, lots of stress on limbs, hence the problem. I now have the right size boots.
Number 2, I have flat feet. This causes lots of excess stress on leg muscles and bones. Check this, and have inserts made, and work on building up the foot arch muscles if this is you.

Drink lots of milk, dont hit the tramps, and be patient.
Its a pain in the ass, like I say, mine were fucked in December, and I am only going to be ready to ride at the start of this season!

Your boots should be so snug that they are almost painful when your trying them on at the store. I've been skiing for a long time and it took me until this year to realize that I need to go down a size. I even bought full tilts with soft tongues and that worked for a little while. But the main problem was my shins were still moving back and forth.

oh and stay out of the back seat

I train a lot of muay thai and we use this technique (with a rolling pin not a ski pole) to condition our shins.

when i got full tilts mine went away. try getting in a hot tub and letting one of the really powerful jets just blast on your shins that always helped me.

Number one thing no matter what kind of boots you have is make sure they fit tight. If there is any movement in the calf area this will give you horrible shinbang. Make sure your strap is super tight and if there is still movement in the calf area you might want to get an insert to tighten that up. But if you're going to get new boots go to a good fitter and try on as many pairs as you can and don't be predetermined on a certain brand.

If you want to eliminate shin bang...

1) Make sure your boots fight correct. Full tilts are not the miracle as many people have pointed out. Go to a boot fitter! Describe your situation and listen to what they have to say. Just because a boot they recommend isn't cool on Newschoolers doesn't mean it doesn't fit and function correct. A boot that fits is a lot cooler than a boot with pretty colours.

2) Play around with how you tighten your boots. Sometimes it helps to tighten them as much as you can. Sometimes it helps to run them a little looser. Quite a few people I know tighten all of the buckles and the power strap and then release the two buckles around your leg while leaving the power strap done up tight.

3) Stop landing backseat. Sounds easy enough, but this is pretty much the main cause of shin bang. When I first started freeskiing I was almost positive my life would end everytime I tried jumping. I was landing back a lot and it was hurting my shins. If you land your shit legit, your shins probably don't hurt as much.

4) Don't try to prevent the pain by leaning back when you are just skiing around... only makes it worse. Stay forward keeping pressure on the front of your boots. It is a little painful if you have shin splints, but it is the right way to ski, I see so many kids who don't have any clue what they are doing skiing around like they are trying to take a shit the whole time.

5) Some people feel that a good thick pair of socks can help, when I was getting really bad shin bang when I first started out, I actually wore a really thin pair of biking shin guards. I found they helped me a lot. They were Pro-tec.

6) If you complete the above steps and just need a little help mid season take 1 Advil before you ski in the morning. The ibuprofen helps prevent swelling, and will numb the pain, usually enough that you will not even notice the pain of shin splints.

Alright.... here it is... this is what you need to do. so. you get shinbang because a sheath around your bone is being stretched and pulled because of your bone bending unaturaly. what you have to do is build up your calf muscles. Also wear a thin sock and get boots that fit. my boots are suffocating and thats how the should be. make sure ur torso is angles slightly and your shoulders are over your toes. i made a fat thread on how to tape your shins as well. ill go see if i can dig it up.

I did that, and it works wonders.

For some reason I never got shinbang until this year. I started getting it really badly at the beginning with my bottom of the line rossignol boots, then switched to FullTilts. I'm hoping that after the summer and resting my shins, the pain will be gone. Also wearing thinner socks did seem to help. Another thing I tried though (this helped them most), was getting some really dense foam with a sticky side. just cut the foam into 1'' x 3" rectangles and stick them on either side of your shin bone at the very top of your boot. It relieves the pain and pressure on your shin, although it is a little finicky and if you tend to sweat a lot, they might come off. Hope that helps!

How old are you? cause i've heard shin bang goes away when you stop growing, your bones harden up and arent as soft anymore.. i usually get shinbang earlyseason tho, then my bones get used to it and i wont notice it anymore. I used to have it real bad a few years ago
