Fast Turning Tree and Bump Ski - Need Advice!!

I am a new member to the forum. Lots of great advice in here. Would like to get some advice from the group for my next purchase. I just spend a week in Alta and The Canyons, and was frustrated in my ability to turn quickly enough to handle the great tree runs and moguls out there....

Here is the deal:

Lower level expert skier - can handle just about any terrain if I can turn quickly enough in it.....
65 years old, 6'-1" and 168 pounds..... due to skinny legs (unfortunately!)

Need to find a ski that can turn very quickly without using a ton of brute force...my old legs can't force the skis like they used to.

Does NOT need to be good in powder - just adequate. Also need to be just adequate in groomers. This will be a second set of skis for me.


I am thinking that the width should be around 90 in the middle. After doing some reading, I am also thinking a double camber should be good, with a turning radius of 15 or so.

My main problem is that my current skis (Renoun) are not nimble enough in trees and bumps. It takes a lot of effort to swing them around in the bumps and trees. Need to find a ski that wants to turn very quickly. Also - probably something pretty light, so that I can swing them quick when I am on top of a mogul.


Can anyone recommend a pair of skis that would be really easy and quick to turn in the trees and bumps. I want to keep skiing the fun stuff, but need something that can help my aging body.....!!!

For quick turns in the trees you'll want something lighter and with a smaller effective edge. I.e. a surfier feel. I've been hearing great things about the Dynastar M free 99 even though it's not the lightest option but it comes in a 179 which will make it easy to flip back and forth at your height. Maybe a little bigger than you're looking for in the waist, but can guarantee it's a great ski.

I typically ski on a pretty different type of ski compared to what you're looking for, but for a lighter option, the black crows captis comes in at 1750 grams at a 178, which would probably be a great length for what you're looking to do here while still having enough backbone to support you.

I just picked up camoxes from a guy who only used them for trees and I can see why, even with pivots they feel light underfoot and can turn on a dime. Granted, there dead center because they’ve been mounted I think 6 or 7 times. My only gripe is that they don’t charge as hard as I’d like, but the number of mounts most likely attributed to that

My old liberty origins always felt quite nimble in the trees. I believe they were quite light as well. Carbon and poplar and all that jazz. Fun ski to turn on for sure

What size length are your current skis? And at Alta what tree zones were you struggling in?

you might like the elan ripstick, very traditional feeling ski but the asymmetry makes the tips very free to whip around when you want to

I don't know if you can find them at a reasonable price anywhere this time of year but take a look at the Black Crows Mirus Cor.

I just got the tour version for half off and I’ve only taken one run on them but they skied through super tight trees on terrible snow really well hahaha

Rossignol B2 bandit. It’s an old ski so you can find them for cheap but they are quite fun and do awesome in moguls/ trees

It depends on the conditions. If it's firm the radius will very much have bearing, in the soft not so much.

Just took mine for a tour, skied some extremely wet and heavy wind blown fresh snow and they performed great. So easy to turn
