I am turning 17 in a couple months and in my junior year, my parents have only been dismissing this idea. I love speed and adrenaline and know a sport bike is perfect for me. Does anyone have any recommendations to what I could tell my parents to get them in favor of me buying my own motorcycle in high school?
Frenchmayo1287Imma take a training course, then keep it to track for a couple months on either the mt 07, z650, ninja 650 or r7. I am really gonna take my time and practice a lot at the track before I go on the actual road.
Getting track days is a good idea, just remember that the big risks on the road aren't necessarily you but dipshits who aren't looking for a bike. Plenty of skilled riders get creamed by people on their phones.
On another note, wtf are you doing at 17 that you have the cash to buy an MT-07, insure an MT-07 as a new rider, pay for track days and track gear and all other associated costs? Whatever I'm doing is clearly wrong lmao

i better not see on on the street because i love to text and drive and i will probably also be playin with my worm and i will definitely turn you into a street pizza
Frenchmayo1287I am 5’6 at 135 pounds, I would either get the ninja 400 or ninja 650
Learn to drive first. When your a kid you don't realize the insane dangers of the road. Get hit by a cat first, while your in a car.
I got my first motorcycle at 30 and it's absolutely terrifying when you realize how exposed you are. At 17 you don't have the capacity to judge vehicle behavior and that's all your doing on a motorcycle.
Be patient man, the motorcycle will always be there.

Nah I have made up my mind, I am doing my training course at 17 and getting a cbr650r. I talked to someone at the gym who rides sport bikes and he recommended me to do it, he said to start with a 600 or 650 not a 200 or 400 cause they are dangerous for the high way and you will get bored of them.

the cbr has an inline 4 in it. You better pay attention in your lessons and make sure you know what you’re doing. That’s the type of bike you shouldn’t start out on if you’ve never ridden before but good luck lol.

Ahhh the beauty of the male ego. Always going bigger because you'll "grow into it". Good luck dude I really hope you the best.
Motorcycle are fantastic fun, but appreciate the frailty of your life on those things.

Your friend is a dumbass.
The 400 makes 50 hp and that's plenty to keep of with traffic/pass people.
You have no experience on a bike so best of luck kiddo.

what are you doing asking others when you have an expert on hand?? do whatever the guy at the gym says and don't look back. guy at the gym would never steer you wrong

A dollar says he over revs it in first and dumps it after it wheelies.

Thanks, everyone is being mean but I have talked to a lot of people and a lot of questions and I think its the best choice for me. Plus i have wheelie control, abs and traction control and i can also limit the power at first. Imma spend a lot of time at the track and parking lots for the first couple months.

Imma be on the highway a lot, the guy I talked to said that lower cc’s that most people recommend are dangerous because you are pinning it at 85 on the high way and you cant rlly pass anyone quickly. That’s why I chose the cbr 650r, I am really excited tho.
Just be smart about this OP and it sounds like you are. Take a course, familiarize yourself with the bike you purchase, get a good helmet, go have fun and be wise. Those 2 ton missiles on the roadway are trying to kill you.

Yeah if it has different settings for throttle control and abs then that will be huge for learning. Just know that you’re starting out on a legit super sport race bike and not something that is beginner friendly.
A bike like that will kill you very quickly. I’ve never crashed on the street but I have crashed on dirt bikes going less than half the speed that I would be going on the street. I can tell you that it’s nothing like crashing on skis. It happens very fast and if you go over the handlebars you won’t have time to react by putting your arms in front of you. You’ll just be dead.

I think the cbr650r will be a great choice. A 400 will absolutely be a dog on the interstate. I didn't even like the ninja 650 that much on the highway, but this is at altitude where we are losing 15% power or so compared to sea level.
Seriously a 400 probably has less power/weight than a v6 camero or mustang. Not fun when you're trynna get around Karen in her lexus gx42069 with starbucks in one hand and tiktok in the other

DilldoesAnd? It's got about the same hp as the 650. Kid has zero background and your recommending a 100 hp bike.
The kid can buy whatever but I've seen too many kids die from having an ego.
If you wanna keep arguing that's cool and if you want to catch the gap from a 500 come on up to Hallet and ill teach you a thing or two.
Catch a gap from a 500? You're adorable. We're talking being able to pass a semi at 75 mph not some valentino rossi wannabe's on baby bikes on a circuit.

DilldoesSo you suck at corners and have stupid opinions.
Cool.
You're like every sensitive japanese slow car owner ever. YoU sUcK aT cOrNeRs. Sure dude. You have nice bikes and you know exactly which ones you prefer on the highway don't even front.

Yes I prefer my K1300S more than the Ninja on the highway but I'm 30 and have legit had my license for more than half of my life. This is a child we are talking about with no experience.
Again I would hate that this kid got hurt etc due to ego.
It's not like he can't sale or trade in a beginner bike for something after a year.

I'm done arguing at this point.
Y u being such a dick, I have talked to so many people that say the cbr650r is a great first bike. It had power limitation as well which I would use to start of with. I know a lot of people that start on 600cc’s super sport and say it was fine. I am not a dumbass that just gonna start off and go to Mach Jesus speed. Imma start off real slow cause that’s what my parents told me. Imma spend months in parking lots as well getting used to clutch and shifting i m not going straight into the road

Kid I am voicing my opinion because I don't think it's safe.
The same way I would advise some kid on his 3rd day of skiing to probably not go down Corbets.

Mmmm, that's easy to say now when you are sitting behind your keyboard/phone. When you are in a less clear headed state, say in front of a girl (or guy) you like, or you just got in a fight, and you hop in that bike you may, and likely won't, have the same clear-headedness or perfect decision making ability.
Most of us have been juniors in high school so this state of being is not foreign to us. You on the other hand have not been any older then you are right now. Imagine looking down at your 6 year old self who thinks putting a fork in an electrical socket is a good idea. That's kind of how this thread feels for me, and I am sure for @Dilldoes
You're too young to be closed off to alternative ideas, just because someone disagrees with you does not mean they are wrong or that they are being mean. There isn't a right or wrong here, just opinions. A case could be made that (insert any bike) is a great beginners bike, and you can always find someone who will agree with you. What a horrible existence it would be where everyone told you you were right and you were exposed to no outside opinions, right? Why are you so open to advice about 600cc bikes and not the contrary. Consider how much shittier larger cc bikes handles. Why is a Mazda Miata such a fun car to drive? Its such an underpowered car. Well the answer has to do with the design, the balance, the weight, these all contribute to a fun experience.
You didn't ask for advice on what bike you should get in OP, you asked for advice on how to convince your parents that you should get a bike. My advice would to be to ask your parents to get a dirt bike for you so you can learn things like throttle control, braking, cornering, etc in a environment that isn't full of cars. IMO they are more exciting then street bikes anyways.

this has been bugging me the entire thread but there is a HUGE difference between a 600cc supersport and a 650.
650 is made for a “comfortable” (lmao still a sport bike so not very much) riding and more commuter-style riders. this is your typical recent divorcee that wants to get a sport bike because their wife didn’t want them to ride when they were married.
a 600 SUPERSPORT is 10 times out of 10 a purpose-built race machine. it is homologated from a class of motorcycle racing and the bikes that are built for this category are brutally powerful and unforgiving track weapons that are only street legal because the manufacturer softens the suspension by a hair and throws lights on it.
i realize this has no bearing on this conversation at all but just a pet peeve of mine when it comes to bikes
I had a first date postponed tonight because the girl got her booster this AM and was feeling like shit.
Wish I had taken her out last night instead of going to a jamband concert that disappointed and cost a ton in ubers. I might have been able to talk her out of it and save her.
Might consider riding one if I was somewhere really remote like Alaska but I don't trust humans in cars. I ride my bicycle on the sidewalk only FUCK riding in the street.

Respect. I just want a 2-stroker or a 350 KTM to terrorize my neighborhood with and also trails.
