It’s kind of unfair to fully judge skiers just based on videos imo, esp comp runs. I get that most people will never see these guys in real life but it’s always different because you actually see and hear the personality more when the camera is off instead of just perfectly cropped shot after shot of difficult tricks. Colby always has had a distinguishable style whenever I’d see him and Dylan sondrup saucing through PC, often looked like they were having the most fun out of anyone in the park
And along that same line, the inverse can also be true. Some of these film-only skiers are insufferable assholes in person but can make a cool looking ski movie that has all the right vibes on the surface when in actuality they’re just cynically copying whatever is stylistically popular atm because they’re scared of becoming irrelevant

No, nor did I say that it does. Personality has a huge effect on style, Edjoy doing a breakdancing move at the end of his run and smiling ear to ear has an effect on how his skiing is perceived. Style isn’t some objectively constructed thing, it’s a vibe too.
Get mini hits of skiing through pre season events time of year. Openhaugen today and another jam at a local shop next weekend. Feeling like a drug addict

Even just watching has me hyped, wanting more. Curse preplanned events I can't make it to that one next weekend.

Went down a bit of a rabbit hole the other day looking at 2000s early freeskiing top sheets. Figured I’d share some of the more interesting ones here.
4frnt TNK 2004, looks like a pair of Vishnus before Vishnu was even an idea in Emmets head. The inclusion of the plaid could either be a flannel or boxers, if it is boxers it is a hilarious inclusion imo.
Armada Pipecleaner 2007, clean graphics, jet skis come to mind. Lots of Edollos are also just reused t halls or arvs. Lot of ugly armada graphics from the 2000s with weird drawings, the mad steez stuff was always dope though.
Line Skogan Pro 2005, a classic looking bling era graphic with imitation Gucci print all over it, definitely a style I wouldn’t mind seeing revived, makes me want to throw on an oversized puffy with a fur lined hood just looking at them
Armada ARW 2007, one of the funnier more bizarre graphics they’ve ever released, it is loveably douchey in a truly 2000s way.
Volkl Gotama 2007, interesting how few skis are willing to orient their ski graphics sideways. Cool pastoral graphic that doesn’t remind me of any other ski really. And speaking of the orient, despite Volkl being a German company they did have an odd obsession with Asian culture in their 2000s skis, churning out amazing graphic after graphic for these skis as well as the skis that had a chokehold on every dad, the mantras.

My older brother had those skogens and I can confirm that they were absolutely sick af, one of the best topsheets of all time

fantastic post. thanks, i had forgotten about some of those. and agreed on volkl's obsession with asian graphics being weird but cool. fire skis a lot of those were, too-- the katana and gotamas especially
I always thought pipe cleaners had such sick graphics. Honestly, I really like early armada graphics. They were either wild or super clean. Maybe my opinion is skewed by nostalgia but modern armada graphics just don’t have the same zing (even though a few are reused).

Armada definitely had a special flavour up until 2011 or so. I remember wanting these ARVs but at the time thought that 95 underfoot was way too big for park haha
Black Mountain in New Hampshire won’t open this season, super bummed because the reasons they cited for the closure aren’t getting any better for next season.
Figuring out what to prioritize my ski spending on. Right now I need a beacon (Pipes with the switch confirmed broken) and really want to do the AIARE level one course. Those two items max out a lot of the free spending I'm willing to do. Luckily paid for my bogus pass way back in February. Maybe a lightweight/all day touring rig has to wait alongside a soft and playful set up.
nCrowPretty bummed about Keystone cutting night skiing hours again and Sundays. Was like half the reason I got their pass
they cut the park from it years ago so i stopped going. not really a fan of night skiing. its cold as fuck and it makes the run icier than they would be as they seen more travel during colder temps. if i were them i would only do fridays and saturdays aside from mlk and then spring break/late season. the roi isnt there from my outside perspective. adding significant hours to your most critical lifts for operations is not something i would do. but im not the gm lol.

Whelp, that didn't last long. Snagged a pair of Wildcat Tours with tech bindings for $300 at a swap today.

so sad for me. i skied my first black diamond there! and the terrain is pretty legit for it's size. i'll miss it.

went twice when i lived in CO, first time was alright but the 2nd time it was like -20F and only a few runs open, no park. fuck that
snoqualmie has revived my love for night skiing though. empty runs, nice temps, and most importantly the lodge bar is open late
