escapes turned to shit after the second generation I really can't stand the new ones. how did every vehicle once known for off road ability turn into a boring crossover or family suv?

Because family suvs are where the money is at. No one that wants an off roader goes and buys a brand new vehicle.

New bronco is pretty fuckin rad, at least the top trim one
Biffbarf4runners have been soccermom-mobiles since 1996
I'm a soccer mom, and I mostly agree with you... but I'm also a Toyota head who's done a lot of wheeling in my day (none recently, sadly, because my life is crazy. Photos below are twelve years old.). I have from friends with some beastly 4Runners. I currently own two 5th gens (both SR5 Premium, not TRD Pros), one of which I plan to start building out in 2022.
Still... most 4Runners in Alaska are owned by soccer moms. No shame - they're excellent vehicles for daily driving and fitting multiple kids with all of their shit. It does make my roll my eyes at how many TRD Pro owners never actually utilize the off-road capabilities of their expensive ass rigs, though.

also, escape have been straight garbage as far as I'm concerned from the start, and most defiantly never were an "off roader".

Uhhh first two generations were good cars, the first gens are great off road specifically. The duratec 3.0 is probably one of the best American V6's since the Buick 3800, they have almost no issues. What are you some bum fuck who fits into the "my dodge could do that better than your ford" bullshit?

honestly, my opinion on the "off road" part is solely because it did not come in a true 4X4 system, which is how I would determine a true 'off road" vehicle. And the whole thing about them being turds is just my personal experiences with them in the auto shop I work at, perhaps they weren't all that shabby when brand new, but from what we see of them, They are straight dog water.

maybe because you live in the rust belt and its an American car

What are you seeing specifically im actually curious to see what might happen to mine, Im guessing transmission failure and rusted out shock towers since I assume you live in Michigan? what about cam caps on first gens and bad ignition coils?

Most of the problems we see are mostly due to neglect and rust for sure. The rust thing turns into a slippery slope very quickly one thing leads to another and a simple suspension component replacement ends into a whole rebuild, just to notice there is a rust hole big enough to put your fist inside under the car on the body. These vehicles also don't have the strongest retail value where I am at, making it not reasonable for people to do simple maintenance because it is a "junk car" in many owners eyes. Transmission will blow if you don't change your fluid just like every other auto trans. Just about all of the 1st and 2nd gen cars a pretty much wasted with rust, excessive oil leaks, wopped out suspension, and just general neglect from the owner. Many of the early (egg) weird looking ones are also coming in looking and running like garbage. certain "cheaper" American vehicles just have a tendency to be very abundant and widely neglected. These escapes are one of these vehicles in my area. sorry if I was so aggressive and not thought out in my earlier responses.

rust on them is very much BAAAAAD, if I still lived in MN my tailgate would probably have been replaced by now and there's rust all over the wheel wells in the back. Somehow the frame is still in great condition? My transmission definitely will blow around the 150-175k mark, but it still runs strong.
Abomber22sry peeps know a solid reliable run forever vehicle when they see one
This is facts. Kinda sucks when they don't get used properly but ppl are free to do whatever they want with their own money I guess. I will never really hate on someone for choosing a Toyota.
JemsThe point is that they spend upwards of 60k on a vehicle PACKED with off road features but they DONT use them AT ALL. Of course its their money but fuck man all you need is regular ass open differential 4wd to get your ass to anywhere you want.
I hate my 4runner's open diff lowkey. Have had some times lately where I strongly wanted to weld that bitch together. That being said... Yea you're right the TRD pros are definitely mainly bought for the flex.
