New Climate Change Report

The new IPCC (Intragovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report just came out saying we're fucked and it was for sure our fault. The report says that we're in a "code red for humanity" and that there is "no way to go back". Obviously climate change as a topic has been beaten to death in the skiing realm and on NS but this report is the first review of all the data since 2013 and is the most comprehensive and legitimate. That's gotta count for something. It also definitively points the finger of blame at humans for accelerating it.

For those of us living in the west, I feel like its been easy to see the consequences. Extreme droughts, heat waves, and wildfires have been prevalent everywhere. It sucks being able to stare directly at the sun thanks to a smoky haze, and having to limit time outside due to air quality.

I think people are finally waking up a bit to the fact that its been huge companies fucking the environment for profit while shifting the blame to individual consumers as cover. I also don't see politicians reigning it in or taking decisive enough action to curb it without widespread protests/ a general labor strike.

It really seems like the only hope is to invent our way out of it whether that's a clean energy source like cold fusion, a breakthrough in carbon sequestration, better batteries for power storage, or something of the like. Nuclear power imo is way underutilized.

It's hard not to sound doom and gloom about this when you look into it. Keep supporting sustainable practices and companies that really walk the walk. Start a garden. Ride the bus or bike to work. It all helps in a small way.

In a more cynical sense, how should we prep for the apocalypse? Time to buy more guns? Get property in Siberia? Where is gonna start getting hammered with snow?

It's depressing. All this evidence is staring at us in the face. We're already late on acting on it. The human race has done irreversible damage to the planet and we're on track to make it worse unless we make serious improvements to sustainability and environmental impact. This report is one more piece of scientific evidence that proves this fact.

It's a shame that climate change has become politicized and we're hung up on whether or not it's "human-caused". The simple truth is that corporations have lobbied politicians for decades to allow themselves to operate unsustainably without consequence. Traditional business practice that prioritizes profit, rapid growth, and resource consumption is by definition, unsustainable. It cannot last forever. Unlimited growth is impossible. We are seeing the repercussions of the profit-above-all mentality in our climate. Unsustainable practices are literally driving the global economy and simultaneously destroying the planet. We need a fundamental shift in economic practices if we want to change our course. Patagonia is a great example of successful and sustainable business operations. There are good examples in almost every industry, including food and transportation which are the most destructive. Government involvement will help, but it comes down to consumers and businesses to make a difference. Vote with your dollar. Vote with your ballot. Put pressure on your politicians and business leaders to do better. We can't keep ignoring climate change.

Renewable energy is the key, the USA has to step up and lead the world on this. Renewables and especially nuclear IMO will save the world. We can make nuclear very save and efficient, its not the 1950s anymore, tech alone could completely change how we use nuclear.

Idk what shit is going down where you guys live but out here it’s like our 5th year in a row of oppressive wildfire smoke coupled with a heatwave that hit so hard last month it knocked the power grid down, going to hit 100 degrees again this week apparently in a region where people consider 80 to be cooking. The photos of Mt Rainer right now are like… OH damn we fucked up. Shit is changing and it is not looking good at all

100% agree on renewable energy. Solar, wind, and certain forms of hydro are probably the safest path forward though. Although nuclear is a form of clean energy, there are a few cons as to why America is hesitant to install new plants.

Nuclear technology is much safer than it used to be. However, if something were to go wrong in a modern nuclear power plant, the results can be catastrophic. Fukushima was a state-of-the-art facility in Japan with multiple safety measures in place. An unpredicted earthquake and tsunami combo was the "perfect storm" and damaged three reactors. 160,000+ people had to be evacuated. Over 40k people are still refugees over 10 years after the disaster. Decontamination and cleanup will last 30-40 years. The first cancer-related death has just occurred, with more deaths predicted in the coming years. Lots of radioactive waste was leaked into the ocean. The odds of another nuclear disaster are extremely slim, but it's always a possibility. In America, we have earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, and all kinds of stuff we can't predict. The consequences can be dire if something goes wrong. That's one reason why the government is hesitant to build new plants.

The second reason we don't build plants anymore is that we don't have a great way of disposing of the spent rods and radioactive waste. It's currently stored on-site at plants, but that's not a sustainable solution. Burying it underneath Yucca Mountain in Nevada has many ethical and scientific problems, so that hasn't become a reality either. The third con is that nuclear is prohibitively expensive (and nuclear disaster cleanup is even more pricey).

When alternative green energy solutions like wind, solar, and hydro exist without the immense risk of nuclear, most leadership groups will opt for the safer solution.

50 years ago, scientists thought that nuclear power and dams were the key to the future. Since then, we've learned that dams are destructive to ecosystems and nuclear power has the rare potential for mass devastation. Other green energy solutions have emerged since then with much less consequence. Those are the solutions that governments prefer investing in. Odds are, 50 years from now, new energy sources will be even cleaner than they are now.

I gave up on environment optimism back in 2000. Just pull up threads from 2010 on NS and you can see how people felt about climate change.
Let be realistic; we will continue to burn fossil fuels for a long time to come, brush off concerns from scientists while calling it a hoax and keep giving subsities to big oil.
Im all in for doing my part, but nothing will actually change. Todays greed will kill us all.

Exactly like recycleable materials. Only 1-2% of your recycleables actually get recycled. Most of it ends up in landfills.
Duturte (President of the Philipines) made headlines when his government banned Canadian recycleables from ending up there to be disposed of in landfills in his country. Those « recycleable » in freight containers were full of diapers, e-waste and soiled food pakaging. He woke me up the lie of recycling.
How this happened was a « recycle » company sold the waste to a facility in the Philipines, where it was discovered by workers to be full of trash. Then, the company went bankcrupt and later found that it was a shell company without actual owners. According the CBC news, this is not an isolated case.

The best solution is to consume less, but capitalism model prevents us from actually doing it. Modern western economics is valued on gross domestic production; making more stuff at the lowest price, then marked up for consumers.

If anything is going to change, western culture has to find better metrics to actually have an lesser impact on the environment.

Only hope for the environment at this point is a nasty disease that wipes out a majority of the people or a total global economic collapse, so bad nobody can afford gas and stuff. This carbon neutral by 2050 or whatever is just too slow imo .

Corporations and governments are disgusting and most people are complicit. It sickens me to see trash on beaches that were once pristine as a child.

Op to answer your question about where to start buying up the land, I seriously wonder if a gamble could be made for either snow or farmland with this model. Recycling is basically a dead concept at this point. China stopped taking our plastic and there are literally warehouses filling up with plastic and nobody to process it. We need to shift to reuse and reduce. Single use plastic is fucked.

The problem is not so much capitalism but more specifically the Federal Reserve model of persistent inflation. With inflation, our dollars are worth less every year so people are forced to invest in the stock market to keep their wealth. This means corporations are forced to grow their stock price and increased profits every year in a system of finite resources. This results in more and more drastic measures such as forced obsolescence, outsourcing and pollution. Meanwhile the average person is just trying to make it day by day and often cant afford more expensive options because wages never keep up with inflation.

Realistically, we need to go back to a system of Gold backed currency that cannot be manipulated by banks and companies that grow and exist as an ecosystem and not a viral profit model of the stock market. We also need to invest in Nuclear energy because at the end of the day renewables are cool but cant make up the numbers of our energy demand.

The biggest source of this unlimited growth model is the Federal Reserve. Unless we address our pretend bank- printed currency then there is little we can do to actually make a change. This model worked ok during the "Unlimited Resources, Limited Labor" model but is falling on its face in todays "Limited Resources, Unlimited Labor" model.

Nuclear is clean and the earth is big enough to pile a quadrillion years worth of nuclear waste far away in siberia where nobody will ever find it.



as for warming all we have to do is “fertilize” the ocean with the nutrients photosynthetic phytoplankton need to bloom. That way you turn the entire pacific into a producer of oxygen and an absorber of carbon.

The whole “lets reduce our carbon footprint” approach is like being in a 100 degree house with no air conditioning and saying, “hey guys, if we sit down and dont move too much, we will emit less energy, so we will be able to make sure the house only gets 1 degree hotter every 10 minutes as opposed to every 9 minutes, so we can be happy to be a part of reducing the rate that the house gets hotter.”

Fertilizing the ocean, on the other hand, is literally like throwing a window air conditioning unit into the house and chilling that bitch down to 69 degrees.

the ecosystems may have to adjust, but if they do, they will adjust like they always do. Ecosystems are not as fragile as the climate nazis would want you to think.
DNA builds tenacity into every organism. If it didnt, it wouldnt be here.

the time of half measures like reducing carbon footprint will one day be over. So might as well get it over with already and do some full measures for fuck sake.

News like this really makes me question what the fuck is even the point of trying to be a more responsible consumer anyway. At this point I just wanna live my life until it's not worth living anymore, what is the point of trying to work all my life to someday retire if the world I finally have time to enjoy is scorched to hell. I'm working 40 hours a week and for what, to be so burnt out in my free time that I just sit around and do jack shit? I'm proud of myself for using less plastic and eating less meat but for christ sake some fucking bald shithead billionaire just shot his penis ship into the atmosphere with enough carbon and heat to completely offset my lifetime of efforts.
Is the solution for people to buy things that emit less carbon, should everyone go out and buy an electric car, a new plastic thing, more things that are better but are replacing other things that are now trash, replace their old plastic solar panels with new plastic solar panels that are a little more efficient? Should we just stop having kids so that the burden of this climate doom isn't placed on the shoulders of humans who will have an even lower quality of life than we are starting to see now? Should we all just go out and get sterilized, or do we just go one further and kill ourselves once we are satisfied with the life we've lived and cannot continue to live a life of suffering in a world unfit for life?
Humans will be killed off and any changes that get implemented now aren't going to have a huge reduction on when that will be, but the earth will survive and new life will be adapted and recover and evolve in the same way that birds were able to survive what killed the dinosaurs.
So what is even the fucking point?

Working outside sucks a fucking dick this summer and some of the only small sheds of joy like watching the sunrise over the mountains or just cool, crisp, fresh morning air hasn't been a thing in 2 weeks. People aren't getting full checks either because going home early and getting rest vs. suffering to get full hours just isn't worth it.....and nevermind getting COVID.

Wanna add to this that deforestation really sucks. I saw this news article the other day that DeWine planted a white oak with his grandchildren to commemorate Ohio's growing barrel industry for alcohol/spirits. First off that's such a ridiculously annoying type of publicity. Like man you did zero shits to plant that tree. You didn't even dig the hole. You didn't even put the first amount of dirt in to stabilize it. The workers names deserve to be commemorated, not you.

Second I decided to look the tree up. ODNR says they're common and not endangered so that makes me feel a bit better as the DNR is pretty objective. However I also read on another site that it only makes up 11% of the canopy now, and used to be 40% or more. Their decline is only second to Ash trees which have been devastated by emerald ash borer. They're not super fast growers either. Don't get me wrong, our other trees like maple are beautiful but hardwood trees can be so majestic. Apparently the only saving grace is Wayne National Forest has a good amount of white oak.

That's all really sad. DeWine is just forcing propaganda, ignoring the fact that those practices are unsustainable. I was recently in Shenandoah National Park and it was so awesome hiking. I've never seen so many oak trees in my entire life.

Plant a tree folks. Plant some clover. Plant some plants.

I really wonder what its going to take before people really start showing solidarity to fight this. Everyone has to work too much to really organize to any significant degree without some catalyst. Even if there is, not much will change. How far is too far

Honestly I dont believe in the extreme doom and gloom hype. The media has been saying crap like this back when they said peak oil would destroy civilization and when they said the ice caps would be gone and oceans overrunning our cities right now. Even back in 1989 they said we had a 10 year window to fix climate change and here we are 30 years later. There have always been wildfires and before humans massive fires burned through the forest, its a natural part of the ecosystem. The problem now is human encroachment and poor forestry management. There have always been storms and catastrophic floods but back in the day people just accepted that is part of life and moved on instead of sensationalizing everything like the news does today. There was even a time back in the middle ages when it was so warm they grew grapes for wine in England.

So in any case- enjoy life, quit using single use plastic and be conscious about your choices but living in the doom and gloom the media puts out is not good for you or anyone. Hell, most of our issues could be fixed if we just started growing Hemp instead of garbage corn. Even back in 1938 we realized we could make almost anything we needed out of Hemp:

They're not super fast growers either. Don't get me wrong, our other trees like maple are beautiful but hardwood trees can be so majestic. Apparently the only saving grace is Wayne National Forest has a good amount of white oak.

That's all really sad. DeWine is just forcing propaganda, ignoring the fact that those practices are unsustainable. I was recently in Shenandoah National Park and it was so awesome hiking. I've never seen so many oak trees in my entire life.

Plant a tree folks. Plant some clover. Plant some plants.


Just wait until Asian Longhorned Beetle really takes hold. Oak wilt also is spreading like wildfire.

eheathRenewable energy is the key, the USA has to step up and lead the world on this. Renewables and especially nuclear IMO will save the world. We can make nuclear very save and efficient, its not the 1950s anymore, tech alone could completely change how we use nuclear.


We need more efficient internal Combustion engines- the third world is not gonna use a damn Tesla. They are still driving cars from the 60’s and 70’s in some places. There is simply no short term solution for the developing world, and they are not gonna stop using gasoline.

Heck, even here in the us theres a long ways to go infrastructure wise for everyone having electric. It took decades to get the gas supply chain developed to what it currently is.

IC engines can only be 23% efficient thermodynamically. They cant get any more efficient than that. Its physics, not will power.

Pretty inefficient too. Hydrogen engines are essentially on-vehicle generators for batteries. The infrastructure and cars are expensive and the cars are slow and have low range. The Toyota Mirai is a hydrogen car on sale in SoCal right now and it’s top of its class, but still lags behind ICEs and EVs. All-electric just makes a lot more sense.

Outdoor and greenhouse setups are not too bad but indoor setups running 15 to 20 1000W HPS bulbs is not exactly energy efficient...

the solution is easy. Clinate change is not something we lack the ability to control.
