New Climate Change Report

The new IPCC (Intragovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report just came out saying we're fucked and it was for sure our fault. The report says that we're in a "code red for humanity" and that there is "no way to go back". Obviously climate change as a topic has been beaten to death in the skiing realm and on NS but this report is the first review of all the data since 2013 and is the most comprehensive and legitimate. That's gotta count for something. It also definitively points the finger of blame at humans for accelerating it.

For those of us living in the west, I feel like its been easy to see the consequences. Extreme droughts, heat waves, and wildfires have been prevalent everywhere. It sucks being able to stare directly at the sun thanks to a smoky haze, and having to limit time outside due to air quality.

I think people are finally waking up a bit to the fact that its been huge companies fucking the environment for profit while shifting the blame to individual consumers as cover. I also don't see politicians reigning it in or taking decisive enough action to curb it without widespread protests/ a general labor strike.

It really seems like the only hope is to invent our way out of it whether that's a clean energy source like cold fusion, a breakthrough in carbon sequestration, better batteries for power storage, or something of the like. Nuclear power imo is way underutilized.

It's hard not to sound doom and gloom about this when you look into it. Keep supporting sustainable practices and companies that really walk the walk. Start a garden. Ride the bus or bike to work. It all helps in a small way.

In a more cynical sense, how should we prep for the apocalypse? Time to buy more guns? Get property in Siberia? Where is gonna start getting hammered with snow?

TLDR: Scientists confirmed we've fucked the Earth, what do?

An independent intergovernmental panel consisting of the worlds' leading expert scientists came together to reinforce and reiterate a consensus illustrating that is backed up by increasingly better data and understanding to say that we're fucked like they've been warning for decades is supposed to lead straight to the end goal of oppressive authoritarian governments everywhere.

This climate change shit is about power and government control in how big money interests lobby and control governments (America especially) in order to exploit more resources in the name of profit. We're in a reality where the natural world around us will deteriorate for decades largely due to corporations not being checked by government. Donating to politicians and lobbying have huge financial returns and youre dumb as fuck if you really those returns end up benefitting average people or the natural world.

I get so much shit for solar panels on my house. I love how many people who aren’t in any position to tell me how to make a good investment still love to tell me what a waste of money i made. I want my wife to get an EV since she drives the most but i still prefer to run boosted cars off e85.


i wonder if i need to plan on someday never letting my daughters know i worked in oil and gas. I loved it and that’s where i made my investment hay, but in 10-20 years i could see it becoming a major source of tension if they found out and wanted to go Greta on me.

my daughter’s name is also Greta...

This ignores a few things. A large portion of China's renewables are Hydro. On the wind side of things Chinese installed wind capacity typically underperforms significantly compared to the US due to a few factors such as poor siting, and bad technology.

It's also easier for them to just jam turbines wherever cause they can just take the land needed. While much of the optimal space in the US is privately owned so it takes a little more to get a project off the ground.

I work in wind and we are working almost beyond capacity to keep up with turbine demands. Last year was the biggest year ever in North America for my company.

Right on brother. We’ve got a ton of mills popping up in VT. All along the “blue” hills around Rutland. Even southern VT is kicking it into gear and installing a bunch of turbines along the ridges. I think Jiminy Peak in Western mass is mostly green powered. And they will be 100% in a few years.


just curious how Hydro comes into play. That’s basically dammed rivers ?

if you bumped up the Oxygen levels in the atmosphere you could start cooling the planet immediately.

This sounds like a satirical essay I wrote in 9th grade about how we could stop global warming by opening all the worlds' refrigerators and running them on high 24/7. I wanna believe in a few years you'll gain critical thinking ability beyond the average 12 year old but I don't think you will given how much you stroke yourself over your own supposed iq

Yes, you should feel bad about your own personal carbon footprint, since that is the only thing you have control over and big corporations will only care about their impact once all of their customers do. It is a small impact, but once all of the consumers have electric cars then BP can start cleaning up their oil spills.

Idk why they just don't turn the diesel generators on in the wind turbines and use them as big fans to cool the planet down

Theoretically you could backfeed electricity from the grid and turn the rotor the opposite direction. When there is no wind there is actually a tiny amount of consumption on a wind farm. Maybe I should do an NS AMA on wind turbines.

So to be able to surf the on the great lakes during the summer minnesota just has to turn on all their turbines? Easy.

I definetly did not work in the industry, but we had quite a few big ones on are land. Turbines are cool shit

Youre saying that u were in 9th grade in this country and you thought a fridge could just cool the earth by, like, deleting energy, or something?

when you took an iq test, did the score come back with a reading of “NO” ?

if i was in 9th grade and thought refrigerators could solve global warming i would have to be a pretty enormous asshole to try to talk down to somebody whos placenta had a higher iq than i did.

Great, so how are we going to pump enough oxygen into our atmosphere to result in a 6% change, "instantly", as you said, without continuing to contribute to the problem?

Seems like if this was such a good idea, that everyone would be doing it.

What I think is more likely, is that you read the title of an article, didn't read any of the science, and then made some dumb claim that we could instantly cool the planet by just flipping a switch and changing the composition of our atmosphere.
