Chairs that spin clockwise or counterclockwise

Is it just my bad memory or do the majority of chairlifts go counterclockwise? Could also be a regional thing. Because the majority of chairs go counterclockwise i prefer them as they feel more natural.

My fave chair at my home mountain goes counter, Also KT22 at Squaw and Chair 23 at Mammoth. So I'm gonna go with counter clockwise as the preferred direction.

I feel like most newer lifts spin clockwise and older ones counterclockwise. Idk why I made that statement but ya.

As far as I can tell, there's not much rhyme or reason as to which way a lift spins, except maybe a few cases where on high speed lifts you have to load or unload on the side of the terminal because of space constrictions.

Although I will agree that most of the epic lifts I can think of spin counter clockwise. I'll add Peak chair at Whistler and Pali at A-Basin to the ones already mentioned.

Never really thought about this but yeah doesn't matter to me. If it's a lift that follows trees only on one side it's nice to be on that side tho

All the chairs on the backside of my mountain spin clockwise, and on the front side they all spin counter-clockwise. Wack

I just spent a while staring off into space trying to picture every lift I've been on. I'd say the vast majority were clockwise, but I'm definitely second guessing myself a lot.

yikes this definitely got me thinking. My home hill has two lifts each one goes in a different direction. The bonie at jay is counter but the single at MRG is clockwise. I would have to say I don't really care as much as where people load on the lift. Not a fan of lifts that scoop you and bring you around the corner of the bull wheel.

I don’t know for sure but I’d be willing to bet prevailing wind direction plays a part in which way they run. If you’ve a cross wind I feel like you would want the chairs & cable to blow toward the towers on the loaded side (side going up) as the weight would be pushing against the tower structures rather than being restrained by pretty much just the pulley wheels.

This is blowing my mind I always thought it was the same way. I think my favorite lifts go counter clockwise, mostly older 2 seaters, so I’ll stick with that.


prolly been hit in the head with the bar more on clockwise lifts.
