Someone cut the cable on the Sea to Sky gondola again. Sounds like they have video footage of the person doing it this time..

I want to know how they did it, theres some serious potential energy in that cable, and it would snap at some random point part way through and send the cables whipping around. Super dangerous.

Pretty shitty. Hope they catch the person or people. I hate vandalism. Whether it's some dumb pseudo hippie "saving the planet", an angry former employee, or just some chad.

Maybe you hate tourism, maybe you hate gondolas, maybe you just like to break stuff, idk. Regardless hope they find and arrest them.

Meh, small torch set that you could carry in a back pack would do the trick no problem. I’d highly advise not to do this as who knows what that cable will do once you start cutting. I would not want to be anywhere near that.

I don’t think you’d need a torch just a grinder with a good cutting wheel.

I sure as fuck wouldn't want to be anywhere near something like that. I guess at the point where you cut it the cables are going to fly away from you fast before they slice out to the sides but damn. That would be a butthole puckering moment for sure.

Still don't get it. If it happens again I hope they get clipped by the cable or a rogue gondola cabin.

Shit, enough batteries and blades in a Saws-all could even do it

I wonder if you're "safe" being directly at the point of the cut. Although nothing feels safe about holding an angle grinder spinning full speed as a highly tensioned cable snaps. Actually curious on what the person used. I wonder if they'd keep from releasing it to keep other people from doing the same. Idk, would be cool to find out.

I wonder how much you have to even cut through before it snaps from the pressure. One last strand, a little cut into that. Idk.

Would be pretty rowdy to witness. That said, I'll stay the fuck away from high tension cables. Even with winch cats you're not fucking with it while it's tensioned and most people are smart enough to stay the fuck away from them while they're hooked up.

Yeah I live here in Squamish its super sad to see. I heard it was a 14 million dollar claim last time. I can't imagine what this will do to their insurance. The place is awesome for locals mid week. Rip up there for a beer, do some work on the laptop, or the obvious of going for a hike or ski and getting a head start on the elevation. I hope they find out who's behind this...

Also all the smoke from the wildfires in the states that have blanketed us in BC definitely would have helped the perp, here's a photo from my window this morning.

This is the second time it happened though... same thing a year ago. They had to close for 6 months and rumour is it was $14 million to get going again. Plus being shut down for a couple months with the pandemic, $$$ must be tough...

yeah or a cutoff saw with a metal cutting blade, would be terrifying for sure to use that high off the ground but it would go through that cable no problem

You could easily do it with some thermite. Easy to make. Light with a fuse. Burns very quickly but if you have a long enough magnesium ribbon or different fuse hot enough to ignite it and fast rope down, you could probably get out before the cable cuts your body in half.


But fucking seriously the balls on this person if they actually cut it versus remote severing it. Fuck. Clearly they've never seen ghost ship.

I caught a Coyote like 10 years ago with a winch cable. Just enough for him to kinda stumble/roll
over. Always think about that if I whipped the cable. Then I would have had to clean up a mess

I remember it being contraversial at the time. It was about environmentalism but also from tourism wreking the place. Its in a provincial park and many residents were pretty pissed off about it.
Tourists tend to leave the trash where they stand, cut the trees and spray grafiti wherever they go and I guess someone had enough...

First time it happened, reports said that the wires were cut clean. Could be from a zip-cut. This time they had motion sensors, cameras a its own security firm keeping watch on the gondola. The report mentionned a few days before the incident, the sensors were triggered from someone climbing a tower, but nobody was caught.

Have you seen the 2021 Fiskars scissors? They'd go through that cable like a hot knife through butter. Definitely the tool for the job.

You could do it one handed at the right spot on the tower.

The ends of the fray would tell you how it was done. A sawzall would be very jagged under a microscope. A porta bandsaw would be smoother horizontal lines. Faster too.

Portable band saws are pretty slow and require you to be pretty steady to get a good cut, I feel like a cut off or a grinder would be the only way. The heat of the bandsaw blade would be too much too and most likely kick the blade.
