Is there a list/database of the actual sizes of shells for each boot

that is still the external shell length though but it gives you a rough idea of the boots that run long for their size.

If you want to go cheap, just go to any ski consignment or closeout store. Buying boots online by just measuring your foot even with knowing the interior shell dimensions is almost a guaranteed bust.

Because fit is the number 1, most important thing about a ski boot. Brands live and die by their last shape. Giving certain details out is simply something brands are shy to do.

And it really wouldn't help the end user that much anyway. So the last of brand-X's 26.5 is 297mm long and brand-Y's is 299mm. Are they each measuring from the same place? Given that their last shapes are not the same, it's actually quite hard to do that. It's not like measuring the effective top tube of a bike or a head tube angle. This is quite tricky to do because of all of the curves and non-straight lines that make up the last. Is the actual longest measurement of the last actually where your foot sits in the last? Usually not.

These details are also most likely going to do more harm to your boot selection than help because people love to get fixated on numbers and forget that there is more to how a boot fits than it's listed last geometry. A 299mm lasted boot could fit way shorter than a 297mm lasted boot because the 299-brand made the liner too thick.

There is no standard for measuring these things, even last width and forward lean angle- the same boot can be measure about 3 different ways each with different results. And there is no standard for liner construction. There are simply too many variables for this to actually help make this information meaningful to you. Instead, people will draw the wrong conclusions and write-off a boot before they even try it. It wouldn't save people a lot of foot pain, it will just confuse them.

It's possible to do it, but i've never seen one. How much it will really help getting you the right boot if there was one, i dont know.

I think it will help narrow down a range of boots id want to try. This can be a wrong assumption but roughly i think of last as width and bsl as length. I currently have a perfectly fitting pair of alpine boots and I want to take those two variables to help narrow it down to a couple of touring boots that id want to try.

This is too true. I used to always tell my customers that ski boots are like running shoes, in that an Adidas will fit/size differently than a Nike.
