How do ski mounters make sure they dont drill mounting holes too deep?
Is there something in the jig that stops the drill once it gets to the right depth so you dont drill too deep? Or is there a marker that lines up so you have to just watch the drill and stop drilling once it gets to the correct depth?
they use a drill stopper, depending on the length of the screws you have to use.
I know that marker is giving out special mounting plates to ski shops to make mounting easier and faster.

Cool. Thanks muchacho. Been wondering that for a while
manufacturers of drill bits for skis, like wintersteiger, also have stepped drill bits so you really have to be trying hard to drill deeper than you need to.The flutes on the wider part of the shank are to aid in clearing the drilling debris.
Im not sure how actually shops do it but when i mount my skis i just put the drill bit up against the side of the screw then put tape around the point were the bit goes past the top of the screw. When i drill i just go to the tape on the bit.

Nice. Its reassuring to know shops really have to fuck up bigtime to mess up your mounting.

No i don't i sort of create makeshift ones by fitting whatever boot with the binding. Most of the time I've just been remounting the bindings so i just make a template using the old holes.
the best way is to print these and then attach the paper template to something thin but solid like perspex or mdf/ply, drill out the holes and then drill your skis from that (after a full test mount of the bindings on 2x4 to be sure if you’re unsure if you have printed/drilled the solid template wrong)
