Stevens pass, lmao at actually waking up just to stand in line next to people who aren’t even core. Days like this you might as well stay in bed till lunch, turn up at 1 and hunt stashes / hike sidecountry / tour

winter sports and pow skiing really needs to stop being marketed so heavily as the cool thing to do as well. These big companies selling epic and shit don’t give a fuck about you, they’re just making the sickest places on earth more accessible for noobs just for their monetary gain.

I hear what hypers saying , I ski at a resort where I basically charge to the chair no lines ever Monday thru Friday pow or not , weekends eat ass

while I’ve got no beef with the people plugging up the lines who aren’t “core” , my brain def says man this sucks , and it’s not just lines it’s the slopes , we all gotta share the mountain but for us that wanna jib and charge the traffic blows
for those that are local to see their gem become so packed it feels like it’s time to move out where you were born to find a place where you can have a turn , that would suck

im not here to say fuck the tourists or noobs plugging up lines not lol at people waiting in that line , I don’t have the answer , but people like hyper deserve to vent. We all need to vent! The worlds in a shitty place! Our skiing seasons in a shit place rn! Let people vent , and support them instead of shutting them down
either that or go stand in that line and thank everyone for being there and enjoy the wait , and enjoy all the chop bc noobs washed away the pow before your 2nd run

It's all good for the industry. I bet half of them were already there planning to ski and it just happened to storm and deliver. Dont go hating on those paying full boat for a room, lift ticket and meals. They are pumping more money into the resort than most of us

Just move to Montana or interior BC and get a sled. problem solved. I really don't see the powder crowds as a big deal though. Most large resorts handle crowds this size with ease with their high capacity high speed lifts. And if you send shit then you won't have issues because most jerrys will be too scared to step up to the lines you're riding. My only real issue with crowded powder days is that people turn into animals in the parking lot but I drive a truck and will run them over so fuck it.

not sure if I agree with this, theres always tons of hidden hazards lurking under pow, whether it's an icy mogul or a rock or a fallen log, yeah pow the safest for catching big air but for regs skiing corn/packed pow are the most predictable and safest snow conditions

I think with the newschool hip scene and free riding skiing is becoming increasingly popular and marketing skiing well
and as the East becomes more and more shit ec people are vacationing and moving west
when I was young I could ski in my yard everyday dec thru mar even into April , here it is today

Well its because of the Ikon pass/Epic pass/easier access to skiing/snowboarding and people are taking advantage of it and its obvious that people are skiing more than they ever have.

We don't have the gnarliest inbounds or highest annual snowfall in the West, but I don't think I've ever waited more than 3-4 minutes in line on a pow day. Takes less than 5 mins to get to the lodge from anywhere in town yeeessir

This is what I think makes a nice home resort for your daily go it’s what I do and one reason y I like my home mountain so much
can always go somewhere else , having a place like that at home is great

for sure. I've talked to a lot of people who have ikon/epic and they say they now take 2 - 3 ski trips a year when they used to take only 1. So big resorts are more crowded for sure, but I'm not convinced the actual number of individual skiers is going up. I remember reading in powder that the number of skiers in the US hasn't increased significantly since the 70s

I'm just speaking from pure experience, no data, other than the number of epic passes and ikon passes sold.

I've been skiing in utah now for 12 years, its busier now than it was in 2007, maybe I'm in a bubble but from what I've seen and heard from others, this mega pass boom is hitting every large resort involved with the passes. Epic has been doing this slowly for years while Ikon came in hot the last two years, making the changes more abrupt.

yeah utah is popping off for sure, my dad tells me about skiing BCC/LCC back in the 80's and it sounds nothing like it is now. My theory is that powder skiing has had a boom in popularity because of rockered skis, so now anyone can do it. Back in the day you had to be really fucking good at skiing to shred Alta, but now everyone and their rich dad in his 60s can do it, so places like utah are getting mobbed, especially on pow days. After living in utah I moved back east and started skiing at a tiny little mountain, and I wouldn't say skiing is having a boom in popularity there. I think that overall it's more of a shift in who is skiing what and where and not an increase in the amount of skiers nationally.

I totally agree. There has been an epic pass (Colorado pass) for like 20 years. Day tickets are more expensive than ever.

100% it's advancements in ski tech making it easier for everyone to rip.

Its also because I take my trips EARLY and go wherever is gonna be good right after Thanksgiving and am out of money come the holidays. Dec/March/April is when most of my skiing occurs with a East Coast weekends/day trips inbetween.

Sorry but Jerry can't get motivated to go skiing until its January, his Ikon still hasn't been used, and there is fresh snow. If you aren't a loser yourself you should already have 20 days in and have lowered expectations for days like this.

Those people are the ones who pay enough to keep the resorts open, unlike the rest of us who ski 30+ days a year on a season pass and only go in the lodge to poop.

That being said, I'm glad I don't go to one of those destination resorts with a hotel and village and stuff, those crowds are too much

idk if kwood is known as a busy resort, PC and Vail are both huge so they never feel that bad, but they are certainly busy. Also, PC is the least busy resort on a powder day in utah bruh because its weak af.

That being said, people dont come skiing in December because its rare we get a good amount of snow until January, might have been good this year/last year but the 5 years before that we were skiing ribbons of death til January.

Yup. The weekend after Thanksgiving is the cheapest time to travel, period. Noone goes anywhere. I can afford to visit places I otherwise could not. 2 weeks vs 1 week is also an option since shits not 500/night. I saves all my monies until a few days before Thanksgiving and wait to book my opener ski trip. A November base and long range forecast of moisture always delivers.

Kirkwood came through this season. Last year was Vail. 2 years in a row of 2 week Whistler trips when they had a base by mid Nov. Year before them Aspen w/Highlands fully open already. Prior to that I kinda lived in Tahoe and pre Thanksgiving pow @Kwood when Vail had just bought it and had lifties/patrol and cared more. Fuck January and February I like to go somewhere warm for Dr King's birthday.

skiing pow is awesome but the hype is ridiculous. These people drove on shitty roads and are now spending more time in lineups and limited terrain openings and most will spend their runs skiing sloppy seconds on the main runs. All that and they still leave leftover pow in the trees. I guess it's better than skiing the ice that was underneath...

Skiing/snowboarding has grown tremendously the last 25 years and its been pretty cool to see it grow into what it is now. From the limited people that even knew about skiing back in the 80's to see where it is now on social media, pretty impressive IMO. As long as there is snow, there will be people like us, chasing the passion.

That line was because the only lift open on the backside broke, and almost the whole resort got stuck back there. They didn’t close the backside while fixing it, so people kept funneling into that line. Whole front side was wide open.

Yeah this was a weird occurrence. The lines at jupiter are long on pow days but this one was caused by lift malfunction. The link below has a good description.

Ive done the ice coast for 23 years. Most memorable years were 2008-2012 where total annual snowfall was between 15cm to 75cm. I couldnt tolerate the January to March seasons, so I moved out west.

Dont worry, first timers are always around to ski your skin track and snowplow areas to base ice in a couple hours... so you dont win anymore.

I really hope you don't actually believe this. Obviously pow can make landings safer, but you are also sending more serious lines so the danger level is elevated. I blew my knee out hucking Smooth Air at Squaw on a pow day. I know TONS of people who have gotten hurt on pow days, when you are in serious terrain and skiing it really fast things can get bad in a hurry. I have seen people get buried after hitting cliffs and have their friends dig them out. I have seen some huge INBOUNDS avalanches AFTER bombs were thrown.

I know what you mean, hitting big stuff is generally safer in powder, but to say you can do what you want without getting hurt is just not true.

As for the OP, well yeah, those companies don't care about you. You can accept and deal with it, or not. You don't have all that much of a choice if you want to ski at big resorts these days. Having said that, lines on powder days have gotten much bigger since fat skis and snowboards came into play. Those tools allow more people to enjoy powder, so in a sense THAT is a big part of what you should be complaining about. Epic/Ikon don't really need to promote winter sports, they were popular enough already. In one sense the approach that Epic/Ikon take COULD reduce crowds, as single day tickets have gotten so expensive that often people who are not serious just won't be willing to pay. The issue is that people who DO have passes will go more often than they might have, and those people tend to be skilled enough that they might be able to enjoy powder.

Watch Scott Gaffney's classic 1999 and you will see some shots of the KT line on a blue bird day. It was endless back then. Big lines on powder days are nothing new.

Was this on a Saturday or Sunday? If so, this situation is par for the course. If this was on any day during the week, I’m shocked. I hit Stevens on pow days during the week and the lines aren’t anything like this.

I agree here on this. that was a knee jerk response, It's not 100% safe in bounds on blower days, plenty of slides happen in bounds like you mention, and people get caught, even worse without gear or knowledge. on the same token, it's much safer than going out of bounds where there is no control. This day at stevens the avy level was HIGH, and stevens has a very dangerous backcountry. Though it sucks waiting in line, you won't safely get as steep and deep of terrain when the AVY danger is HIGH, without putting yourself in major risk, this just minimizes it by a lot.

You should still practice good safety during days like this, partner up, radio coms, making plans etc. Like people said before, its putting money into the sport you like.
