I haven't had the misfortune of experiencing the ramifications of IKON in LCC yet, but in lake tahoe area is has been absolutely awful. Skiiers at Heavenly reported it taking 4 hours to go less than 20 miles from south lake.

All of these issues are caused by, if you can believe it or not, under priced season-passes. It gives people too much access knowing that if they spent 2-3 days at any major resort in California/Utah/Colorado buying lift tickets it'll already outweigh a season-pass

I don't really think that the season pass sales is the issue creating Tahoe traffic. I remember over twenty years ago a big storm came through and it took use 12 hours to get from Tahoe City to the 80 where they turned us around. The combination of a lot of snow with people who are inexperienced in the mountains is always a disaster.

I mean, I remember getting a pass there in 2014 and waiting in traffic to get up LCC so theres really nothing to see in that regard but theres always been talks of possible solutions to mitigate the traffic, Ive always heard those kinds of rumblings since moving here.

Its always been a highly sought-out place to ski though so LCC will always be busy but yeah, Id say the Ikon did add a lot more congestion to the canyon. Its been insane this year. These huge resort conglomerates or whatever dont realize also that some of the smaller places like Alta really dont have that much staff to keep up with the demand nor are built for it either, snowbird kinda is but Alta/Solitude definitely arent

Ikon Pass has nothing to do with South Lake. Traffic around Squaw and Alpine has sucked probably since the 1960 Olympics.

I'm fully braced and am embracing the $619 renewal for my pass, less than four days to break-even. I can't afford not to buy it.

Ikon Pass or not, Lake Tahoe is Bay Area’s playground, and the Bay Area has been getting stupid crowded in the past few years. I was almost not surprised to hear it took my friends 15 hrs to drive home from Incline Village back to the bay a few weeks ago after a dump.

There are so many people moving to Utah its crazy. I remember when they put the Adobe office in Lehi then suddenly the whole place became a tech center.

Its a fuckload of bay area jerries who have never drove in the snow and get hyped up by hearing theres a 10 foot storm happening thinking they are going to get mad pow turns. Then they get here in their soul7s and ski groomers.

I have never seen such madness as when I drove back to Reno from Sacramento in a storm at 6 on a Friday night. Cars flying off the road in every direction, Caltrans trying to shove them as far off the road as possible, people taking off their chains 150 yards past the chain check in the middle of i80 (apparently their prius with summer tires is just really great in the snow and they don't need chains?).

found a train of maybe 4 cars that also knew how to drive in the snow and we got up the hill with 0 issues. But my god i felt like i was in the apocalypse. Swerving in and out of cars sideways in the road, cars bashing barriers, yada yada. On the bright side after a few miles, all the idiots were apparently stuck because there were basically no cars up there.

This was all after like 8 inches max.

Late march to may/june (if we can still ski) is what keeps me coming back to LCC year after year. Sloppy late storms no one really likes, easy drives up the canyon, corn skiing, sunshine, rowdy lines, etc.

If they could add that extra day back to the wasatch benefits it would be nice though. Used to be three, now it’s 2 days to tude, dv, and snowbird. That extra day helps out a lot in terms of linking up with friends who ski/ride elsewhere.

The ikon pass is awesome. I’ve traveled and skied to big Sky, Jackson, aspen, so far along with all my “home”’resorts in Utah and still have mammoth planned and maybe squaw for spring.

You want to get away from people. Go skin or sled in Uintas. Did that for 2 years. You won’t see many people and terrain is great.

I live in PC and am over the complaining about everything ski or busy or housing related. My response is if you don’t like it move. My tolerance is minimal these days.

CA/NV drivers are the worst I've ever seen in weather. Absolutely clueless. Will drive 5 when the roads are clear and never pull over with 30 cars behind them and a million places to turn out that say(state law must turn out) but then will drive 60+ when the road is an ice sheet going down curvy passes. Also will catch up to you and drive 5 feet off your bumper in those conditions, but won't pass. I'm in an SUV I can go 100 because AWD! Then you see them buried to the roof up the side of the embankment.

No headlights ever either. Even the cops drive sketch sometimes. Also 50/50 on lights.

I got pulled over in stateline last year heading back north for doing 50 in a 50 or 45 for "reckless driving", Straight road, packed pow, bluebird day. Cop was frustrated that I didn't understand how out of control I was. I managed to get off with a warning but I was like jesus christ.

But yeah, the road might not even be that bad but the stupid fucks will manage to cause multiple accidents and shut down a road not so much because of conditions, but driving like complete tool bags.

There should be a sign "You've left the bay area, don't drive like a fucking douche". Colorado had some goobers in the mtns but generally not terrible if you got away from summit. Tahoe is just fucked.

Sounds like you’re doing it wrong. Most my weekends are in big cottonwood but few random days in little. I wake up 6-6:30 every day for work so I just do the same for ski days. I’m out the door by 7, usually up at the resorts just before 8. Relax get some coffee and breakfast then first chair. I’m usually done by noon. Then home. No trafffic.

Well after skiing 150+ days a year for 15+ years I feel like I enjoy skiing and don’t need to put in a 9-4 day. Also in the middle of a full remodel of my home that I’m solely doing so that kinda sucks up most my free time. So a few hours in the mornings on some weekends is awesome

Jackson was at 14%, but keep in mind that's also counting all of December when there's no tourism before Christmas, and there's a locals pass that gets you unlimited skiing before the 21st or so.

I hate to sound like an entitled prick, but Jackson simply doesn't have the infrastructure to handle the traffic that the pass haS brought to the valley. Loved the mountain collective because it brought people in affordably for shorter periods of time/ makes it financially feasible for someone to come for a weekend. Now, here I am sitting in an hour of traffic on my 10 mile commute, which would typically take me 15 minutes to drive.

Also: increased injuries and accidents on the mountain, people getting lost in the Backcountry, etc.

Also: I spent $2,200 on my season pass, lift lines are worse on a horrible snow day than they used to be on a powder day, and I don't get free skiing at any of the other IKON destinations anyway.

Dear Big Sky Community,

When I first came to Big Sky almost 40 years ago I was embraced by the community. Thanks Pirate, Betsy, Kelly, Curly, John, Tim, Sally, Mike, Dan, Jodean, Doug, Chris, Walter and countless others for making me feel so welcome back then. That same welcome has awaited most everyone coming since, whether we arrived five years ago or 50. Big Sky is a welcoming place.

Recently, local social media channels are revealing a rash of really negative postings, shunning new visitors and treating new arrivals differently than we were treated ourselves. Sadly, I just read this message from a recent guest:

“… We’re from the UK and have been skiing in North America every year for the past 15 years. We’ve had epic passes, mountain collective, and this year we bought the Ikon base pass. We usually make 2 three week ski trips each season and love the freedom to travel and explore that the multi-centre passes give us. We’ve never encountered any negative reaction to us as holders of these sort of passes- until this year! At Big Sky they were selling bumper stickers saying ‘IKON [not] wait for you to leave’ …”

That note made me really sad because this guest did not experience the warm welcoming culture that our broad community has historically offered. A few people have been targeting these new guests with mean messages phrased around a concept that Big Sky is becoming too busy and newcomers are to blame.

Most everyone knows that Big Sky Resort recently joined two national season ski pass programs, Ikon and Mountain Collective. This move is enhancing the Big Sky brand and showcasing our community to new guests who pour spending into our community. These programs are just another piece in the long-term strategy to move Big Sky into a league of America’s best resorts, right where we belong. Our community is growing as our guests discover and fall in love with Big Sky, just like each of us have.

It’s busier now than it used to be. Is it too busy? The facts say Big Sky is one of the least crowded ski destinations offering more acres per skier than any major resort. In three years, we’ve constructed four modern lifts adding quality and increasing uphill capacity by 1,600 skiers per hour. We’ve made no secret that more on-mountain upgrades are planned.

Many of us know it can be hard to make it in a small resort town. Individuals can struggle. Small businesses can struggle. Big businesses can struggle. Not too long ago, many businesses here, small and large, were going broke and residents were moving away because we did not have enough guests to support the town. The good news is that today Big Sky is thriving. Striking the right balance between prosperity and broke can be complicated. I’ll tell you from personal experience, it’s a lot more fun to be managing success than downsizing.

My life here, our lives here, are made possible by visitors. Big Sky’s culture is friendly and welcoming. We were all new at some point; these guests are our newest visitors.

So here we are: We want a thriving economy without falling into that old ski town trap of not wanting others to come after we arrived. We want more and faster lifts but don’t like anyone else skiing our favorite line. The conundrum, of course, is that our community is stronger with many guests and the services they help us afford. I’m not just talking about ski lifts either. Banks, schools, grocery stores, a hospital and a theater make Big Sky more livable and fun.

I don’t enjoy traffic or lift lines either. I get it. Still, my personal experience is that Big Sky is a more livable place today than it was 40, or 20 or 10 years ago, and that’s because so many people have found our good town and our good people, and their visits have helped us afford these improvements.

I’m committed to working hard to help Big Sky grow better, and I know countless others that are too. I’m also committed to keeping this a fun place, with loads of fun people, who do fun stuff, and I know a boatload of you feel the same way. We’re a friendly and welcoming bunch. Please keep sharing that, continue paying it forward, just like that group of pals did with me 40 years ago.

I think the blame for traffic falls on resorts/local municipalities/politicians equally for not having any foresight or willingness to build mass-transit systems. It's a complicated problem, sure, but not one that has gone unsolved.

Let's all just bear down for another three weeks, April can roll around which is the "end of ski season" for many people, and we can all enjoy tons of spring laps in peace and sunshine with little traffic and mostly chill folks.

I not longer live in a resort town but it was a pet peeve of mine when people would complain about crowds during busy times. You chose to live in a place dependent on tourism and you will still be there after all the tourist leave.

I have an ATA pass, but friends that have the ikon pass only get 5 days to share in between snowbird and Alta. They get a full season to solitude, and 5 days to Brighton.

Maybe some Crested Butte local can chime in and tell us how this plan is working out...

And you've lived in Jackson for how long? 3 years? I lived there 04-14 but couldn't swing it forever. So now I live in Denver and have an Ikon pass. I will make it to Jackson for my second long weekend of the season next week and I hope to snake all of your lines. Ima try for sure.
But really is it me, OR is it you that moved there after me that is the real problem? Or is there a problem with people trying to have fun at all?
Oh and I'm going to buy another Ikon pass for next year very soon. And Jackson is a confirmed Ikon location once again. Muhahaha! It's such a good deal! And I won't hardly spend a dime in the town because we stay with my brother who grows and raises most of the food we will eat.

I skied Highlands Saturday Jan 12 from bell to bell and Snowmass Sunday 13th and didn’t have a line all day. Both days were bluebird 10/10 snow. Didn’t see the crowds there...

Also, let’s take another look at this. 5-10 years ago ski resorts were screaming about flat numbers and how to attract new skiers or boarders. Pass prices just continued to climb. (I remember living in the east coast and Stratton was the first to break $50/day ticket. We thought they were crazy. Now look at it). So pass prices go up, no new skiers, everyone wants to figure out how to get the “millennials” to come ski. Welcome to the multi resort passes for an affordable price. Record number of pass sales with Epic pass and now we have competition with Ikon. Young people buy and travel and ski. New skiers are coming. Ski areas are benefiting in many ways.

We are also at the top of the economic swing. Everyone is making money. More people have more money then ever. People can now swing maybe 2 instead of 1 ski vacation a year. Air fare is cheap. You can get off work early in NYC Friday and fly to SLC and still drink eat and get up and get first chair for the same price and less travel then going to Vermont for the weekend.

This is the new normal until the economy slows down or more resorts are built (which is not going to happen) or we get some serious public transport to some of our major ski destinations. But Americans are fat and lazy. Unless you make public transport cheap free and faster, Joey is still driving his f-350 to ski.

On top of that, Vail/Alterra have figured out that they make more money when people spend less on ski tickets. Vail use to depend on ticket sales for awhile, but realized that their businesses within the resort could make more money. It's truly genius and its working, very well, and now they added "epic day pass" where you can buy a day pass to any vail resort for $109.

Let's all just bear down for another three weeks, April can roll around which is the "end of ski season" for many people, and we can all enjoy tons of spring laps in peace and sunshine with little traffic and mostly chill folks.

snomasterAnd you've lived in Jackson for how long? 3 years? I lived there 04-14 but couldn't swing it forever. So now I live in Denver and have an Ikon pass. I will make it to Jackson for my second long weekend of the season next week and I hope to snake all of your lines. Ima try for sure.
But really is it me, OR is it you that moved there after me that is the real problem? Or is there a problem with people trying to have fun at all?
Oh and I'm going to buy another Ikon pass for next year very soon. And Jackson is a confirmed Ikon location once again. Muhahaha! It's such a good deal! And I won't hardly spend a dime in the town because we stay with my brother who grows and raises most of the food we will eat.
But seriously stop being so entitled. Everyone just wants to rip.

I should preface that I started this sentence "I don't want to sound entitled" because while I'm lucky to live in Jackson, I also work really hard to stay here. I formerly worked in the service industry, but with that being unsustainable longterm, I now have a 9-5 job, and work freelance and babysit on evenings and weekends to allow me to keep living in this place that has become home. Paying $2,200 for a season pass was a LARGE financial burden on me. One that impacted my finances for a majority of the winter. But I moved here to ski. And I spent that extra money to get a no-blackout pass so that every now and then when we get a huge dump I can sneak out of the office and go take a few laps. But unpredictable traffic keeps me from getting to work on time, it forces me to stay late, and it prevents me from sneaking in some of those laps (which excuse me for working hard to stay in a place that will allow me to do that).

@mystery3– as I referenced in my OP, the blame does fall on the resort for not having the resources to funnel this many people to and from the mountain. While I can't blame them for trying the IKON (it did sound like a great idea), but as someone who pays a lot of money to live and ski here I will continue to be critical on how they handle it– because it impacts my everyday life, not just days I go to the mountain.

@snomaster– How long you lived here and how long I've lived here is irrelevant– I work hard to stay here, and my routine is negatively impacted by the crowds from the IKON pass. I moved here from a city, and quite frankly I don't like traffic or cities which is why I live in Jackson and not SLC or Denver. Even Stilson parking lot fills up before 10am! The increased IKON pass traffic should mean huge economic gains for Jackson's local economy– but many of its customers (and you) stay on peoples couches, and don't give any money back to the local businesses who are getting their asses kicked by holiday crowds and shitty tips. Sorry not sorry for standing up for the town that I've chosen to build a life in.



Three cheers for the Mountain Collective pass, which gives affordable access to skiing without being a burden on infrastructure and the local community.
