I know there are more brown pow lovers on this site, yah there is pinkbike but lets be honest, newshcoolers is wayyyy cooler. so lets posts our rides, questions about components, mechanic questions etc in this thread.

I just bought this beauty and i definitely sacrificed uphill capabiltiy in order to get a beefier dh/park bike. id been on a nomad for a while and it's a huge switch in riding styles for me. definitely getting used to the weight and having to keep speed a lot more.

specs for said beauty, 2011 rc2 dh totem, 2012 dhx rc4, highrollers front and back (gona go dhf front and highroller in the back), mtx 33 wheel set, slx brakes, diablous cranks, FSA 760mm Handlebar, Shimano SLX Shifter & Shimano Deore XT Derailleur.

No.QuarterWhat makes you say that? I'm definitely not in the camp that want' ebike access opened up to non-motorized trails, nor am I even close to the target market demographic. But I do think it would be a blast on the kind of trails that are already popular with both MTB and Moto crowds.


Although, now that I just typed that out I would have a seriously hard time justifying purchasing an e-bike over a motorcycle

e bikes are cool. I don’t really see the negatives to them tbh. If you’ve ever ridden one for a day you’ll understand. They are so damn fun and they also can help disabled people get out on the trails which is great.

here in bellingham, there has been a huge surge in people buying e bikes and riding them at our local trail system that does not allow them. Land managers are getting pissed, and it jeopardizes access for everyone. Also, a lot of the low key spots are just getting fucked by people riding them lap after lap after lap on their eebs, and no one seems to feel like repairing any of the damage. Trails are getting shutdown, because jerry bought an ebike and feels like he can ride it anywhere.

Ive ridden ebikes a couple times recently (i am a videographer in the mtb/ski industry, so i used one to get myself any my camera up the mountain) and it was great for that reason, but im not gonna lie, i did not enjoy descending on one at all. so heavy, and not nearly as enjoyable. if im getting something with a motor, its gonna have a throttle and go brap. and no, moto trails are not fun to ride e-bikes on. unless you like axle deep ruts.

On point.

I had a conversation with a guy who legitimately didn't know there was a difference. Or at least he pretended not to very convincingly. Here, weirdly enough, it's been old entitled guys poaching illegal (to any bike) trails on them, including wilderness, which leads to the forest service being harder on all riders, and complete jerries riding them out of control on the beginner trails that I'm trying to coach 6 year olds on. Not great.

The worst is when people try to compare the motor advantage to gears or carbon. Lightening a bike or adding gears or geo is nothing like adding literally hundreds of watts worth of power to the bike.

But I try not to let it get me heated. Maybe it'll make mtb more popular and the traffic will lead to increased trail systems on public land. Maybe. Idk I can only hope

Gonna re word my original post a bit. As a concept the E-Bike isn’t bad. It’s a mountain bike with a pedal assist motor - ok that’s cool.


what comes into play is the person who rides an ebike. I’m seeing more and more people that are using an ebike as a crutch for fitness of riding skills and that is a problem. These ebikes can get a beginner rider in a bunch of trouble pretty quick and sometimes the ebike can make a rider feel like they’re invincible, leading to hotheadedness and as you guys have mentioned, blowing spots up and riding where they’re not allowed to. All bad and that’s a result of the ebike becoming popular.


on the other hand, under an experienced, skilled rider an ebike can be a tool for max fun. Being able to crush out endless party laps is so awesome. The ebike issue comes into play when a beginner rider uses it as a crutch leading to issues mentioned above. The ebike as a tool is really fun and I’m a fan in that regard. Unfortunately ebike culture is moving further into “weird motor hobbyist” and “mid-life crisis dad” realm

I didn't even know Jamis was still a company until now. All I remember is from the pre-carbon days, that the frames wouldsnap if you even looked at them aggressively.

I want an e-fat bike for access up the roads in the spring before they open to cars for ski access, but what Doug mentioned here is so aggravating.

I've moved across town, and my commute is a hell of a lot longer now but the dirt jumps are conveniently on the way home. I also have a garage so I can justify more bikes and I'm thinkin' this summer I need to build something up that isn't horrible and sluggish with big chunky tires on the commute but can also rip on my lunch XC trail rides and jump well. Kinda intrigued by the Marin San Quentin

Check out the nukeproof scout 275. I built one up over the summer and they shred, great on jumps and for jibbing around.

That's been on my list as well, where'd you get yours? Seems like chainreactioncycles.com is one of the only ways to get one and they have always sold out quick and shipping a frame is like $150

I completely agree. Nowadays I see a lot of dh pros using e bikes for training laps, so I feel like they have their place under certain circumstances. But yeah it’s a problem when people think a motor will substitute for a lack of skill

Yeah, I got mine through there, but my shipping was only around 40 dollars. Maybe the higher cost has something to do with brexit.

When I did get the frame I got the last one in stock 5 minutes after they restocked, so they definitely sell out fast but you can get a restock email. Definitely a fun bike and the frame is wicked cheap.

I love the jamis as a trail bike, ive only had it for like 2 months but it rips everything except super steep stuff but i dont have too much of that in arkansas

Wellp, all the snow in NH is gone so I went riding today. A few icy/snowy patches here and there but mostly just frozen leaves and cold dirt. It's so fun ripping around in pants and a flannel without sweating or getting hot.

Crazy variable weather we're having in the Northeast this season - got a 40+ inch pow dump on the 17th and now the Christmas rainstorm brought us right back to looking like November again. These photos are less than 2 weeks apart and in order....wtf!

On other news, guess what I saw on the local trails? A goddamned e-motorbike. This dude was straight hot lapping the flow trails, and then boosting on the up hills with nothing but a throttle. I am going to start a Facebook page for my region called "NZ global citizens against E-MTB" perhaps even start a sticker campaign.

To add to this,

Half shells should be abolished for all pro edits. They look dumb af. Remy Metailler being the biggest culprit, he's sending stuff bigger than most people ever dream of, and does it all in a lame-ass looking half-shell helmet and safety specs.

Everything looks gnarlier in a full face helmet and that's a fact.

Different tools for different jobs. If you're doing really gnar lines and big jumps full face is a must for a video but if it's just ripping on the local trails half shell gives a "out for a normal ride" kinda vibe to the filming which is cool.

Ok, so as a mountain biker I need at least 3 helmets, a fullface so I don't bash my teeth out, a lightweight xc helmet, and one of those 3/4 shell helmets so I get more protection at the dirt jumps but don't look like a wuss for wearing a fullface or a dork for wearing my xc helmet. All of which are in the $100-$200 range each so people know I'm good at spending my money. Got it.


For real tho, I'm definitely looking into getting a full face this summer, I've had too many close calls nearly smashing my face in the ground or into a tree.

Helmets definitely depend on the riding you're doing, even for pros. Doesn't make sense to sweat like crazy in a full face when you're riding something tame, or even something difficult for that matter, as long as it's something that isn't super high consequence.

Well to sum up, full face helmets just look better and adds a new dimension to the footage. Will always prefer to wear them when I know we’re going out filming. Even if it’s relatively tame stuff.

Also I have the saddle for my new bike waiting on my workbench, but still haven't gotten a ship date (not that I'm in any hurry) and if that doesn't sum up the current state of bike supply I don't know what does.

Anyone got tips on how to get a significant other stoked on MTB? My girlfriend claims to want to go mountain biking with me and does truly seem to want to ride trails. But she wont let me buy her a bike or even pitch in to get a nicer bike that won't suck to use on-trail. I'm also worried about the phase where our skill levels are drastically different and she won't have the drive to progress on her own or I will feel guilty for wanting to go on more difficult rides or go fast without her.

Maybe rent her a bike for the day, so she can get stoked on riding a nicer bike. As for the skill difference, you'll probably have to just hang back and go a little slow for her at first, but once she gets to the point where she can at least make her way down more difficult, it will become a lot of fun to follow you down, since riding with someone who's better than you can be a lot of fun. I learned to ride with someone significantly better than me and it pushed me to become a pretty decent rider within a year. Now 3 or 4 years later I'm able to follow right behind him.

Go to a bikepark that has progressive features. Bring a yummy lunch, hang out and don't take it too seriously. Make it easy for her to challange herself and set her up for success.

BiffbarfGo to a bikepark that has progressive features. Bring a yummy lunch, hang out and don't take it too seriously. Make it easy for her to challange herself and set her up for success.


I've been considering a Big Sky bike park pass this summer, so that could very certainly be in the cards

No.QuarterAnyone got tips on how to get a significant other stoked on MTB? My girlfriend claims to want to go mountain biking with me and does truly seem to want to ride trails. But she wont let me buy her a bike or even pitch in to get a nicer bike that won't suck to use on-trail.
