Thinking about buying a puppy

I've wanted a dog my whole life and I think it's time. I'm going to check out some puppies right now. I love golden retrievers. The only problem is they shed a lot. What kind of dog do you recommend, I want a loyal dog. Golden Retriever mix? Lab mix? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated

Have fun spending thousands of dollars over the life of the dog getting it shots and feeding it. Not to mention having to clean up after it, having your house/yourself smelling like dog and it shedding everywhere.

I'm not discouraging you, I'm just sayin.

I have a Cocker Spaniel and she's awesome. I had a boy too but he had a roaming problem and got out and got hit by a car. I used to take hime with me to parties. I would always dress him up for theme parties (toga, pajama party, Halloween etc etc) He was also a groomsman in my wedding and wore a tuxedo. Loved that guy. Click for larger image

but you will have to pay mulla probably. if you can find one at the pound youre in luck.

otherwise adopt.

but ya goldens are the shiiitt. i miss my golden, she is 4500 miles away:(

I love my Golden, but they have way way way too much energy until they are 5. Super hyper. I recommend a German Sheppard. Best dog I've ever owned, bar none.You want a loyal dog, that is your dog right there.

I have a lab mix, might not be the smartest dog but i love her to death. There is a connection that forms right away when you find the dog for you.

get a vizsla. everyones saying their dog is the best but i got mine as a puppy as hes the fucking man. he's hilarious, doesn't shed, trains well, quiet, likes playing and hes a fucking stud- faster then every dog at the park plus all the lady dogs love him.

Labs are always good. If you are getting a young puppy be ready for early mornings and taking them out every couple of hours.
This is Token, she is going to be one year old on Wedneday!! She kept me up a lot of nights when she was really little.

My family recently got a rescue dog who is a boxer pitbull mix, or something of the sort, we aren't sure. But he has short hair so he doesn't shed, and he's the cutest dog ever.

They definitely shed, its just not as visible as a long-hair. Which is better or worse depending on how you look at it.

This was our last one as a puppy. I took the picture /CLAIM. She got really sick with pancreatitus and passed away 2 falls ago. We didn't connect as well as our new one but I sure miss her and love our new one to death.

no, being a shitty dog owner who gives up their companion leads to euthanization. not people who prefer to know exactly where their dog comes from. you cannot shove adopting down someone's throat with that logic. not everyone is able to rehab a shelter dog. just like not everyone can adopt a child with a shitty history. it takes a much different kind of love. so if he wants to get his dog from a breeder, let him. he's not killing a shelter dog because of it. that's some asinine crap right there.

I wouldnt get a dog from a shelter you just have no idea what they have been through. Also half the part of getting a dog is training it. I got a beagle about two years ago after my lab died. Labs are probably one of the better choices. They learn quick and bond well to the trainer. The only thing is if you get a dog you need to be willing to put a couple hours of training the dog EVERY DAY if you want it to be well trained. Its a lot of work at first but in the end it is really worth it.

I wanted to adopt , but they wanted 500 bucks for a young age dog (1+) and every dog I looked at had issues. So i stopped looking at adopting and looked at buying a puppy and got a pure akc paper aussie for 425. I think adopting is good and all but they need to be more reasonable about the price with so many dogs with so many issues.

If you're buying a dog, make absolute certain you can control it, and know how much time you'll have to put in potentially.

My dog got attacked maybe a year ago, ended up having to get staples so it wasn't too bad, the owner of the attacker immediately went to put the dog down, they should have taken the shot and used it on themselves.

The point is, because that owner failed to teach and control her dog, she murdered it.

Luckily my dog wasn't badly hurt at all, but easily could have been.

Ever since he'd been a LOT more defensive around other dogs, would bark and growl anytime he saw one he didnt know, which is the opposite to how he used to be, anyway, only recently after trying various things have I finally started to manage to desensitize him, but regardless, DON'T FAIL AS A PET OWNER.

You have no idea how much I want to go along to the owner of the attackers dog and get her fired, ruin her life for a year or something.


After typing all that on mobile I realize how pissed it still makes me, but on a lighter note, just heard rattling outside, thought the dog was licking the outside of the barbecue, turns out he had somehow gotten under the cover, opened the door, walked inside, started licking the BBQ from below, and this baffles me the most - shut the door!?

THIS! poorly trained dogs and their owners are so fucking annoying, i had to spend four days with this bitchy ass girl and her angy, not at all trained dog, while camping in wyoming with some friends. if you got close to the dog it would growl and bark, get within a foot or two and it would snap at you, i finally gave it nice slap on the nose after two days of it snapping at me, and got bitched out for 10 minutes because of it. after that i just kicked it away any time it ran up to me and started growling/snapping, the girl was just pure anger for the next two days. by the end of the trip pretty much everyone took over the girls job of training the dog and disciplining it and she was pretty much ready to explode in a violent rage. she couldnt communicate without screaming.
cant fucking stand people like that, "im gonna bring my scary ass shitty dog that i'm not willing to even attempt to train on a camping trip and make it a shitty time for everyone else just because i can, and shame on you for not accepting that" those people need to be put down.

I couldn't agree more. I got a puppy last Friday. Me and my gf love the guy. Training him out of his biting phase. it is a lot of work to raise a puppy. it's just like a child. My GF and I have been watching the dog whisperer and taking all the tips he has about how a dog should look and act when in certain situations. We got a lab and cougar hound mix.

We were looking in shelters for a long time. Then finally found him on one of the used sites and we got him from a 60 year old couple who had 2 dogs already and the best was that the puppy was already mostly trained to be nice around people which was awesome. They trained him since he could see. getting him used to people. The guy we got him from said the dog you want to pick are the dogs that come out to see who you are. You don't want a dog who's in the back not going to anyone. If you have enough training with dogs adopt a dog and re-train him but remember getting a problem dog is more work than a puppy.
