Did a town derby with the E-man yesterday... We left after a while, fuck the shoulder-to-shoulder derby grind lol.
We still caught fish tho after we trapsed through the woods to a better spot, but both of us were like "let's get out of here, waaaay too many people"
After we left I brought him to explore a spillway. Cool caves, lots of rocks to walk around on, deep channels, white water and some damn good fishing. Nobody else around either. Taught him how to float a slug-go through white water and act like it's a dying fingerling for ambush fish in pools like that and moving water. He was really jazzed on this fat brown, they usually aren't this big or pretty in there.
I had a stroke of genius and mounted up my gopro on my boat instead of trying to take a fuckin selfie when im fishing alone. works out pretty good but makes the fish look smaller with the wide angle lense. oh well
Yesterday i made the decision that i am catching big fish only this year. I dont care if i only catch a fish a month, its gonna be a monster. Big bass and musky fishing only this year. Buying a swimbait/smaller musky bait rod and reel today. Lets fuckin go
Bass were just gettin ready ti spawn and were huuuungry today. Boated around 50 fish counting a few northerns. Got wacked and missed a good 25 times too, they just kept short striking it. That ir it was some of them dumbass northerns.

ya i can drop shot and wacky rig and catch 60 fish on my lake but theyre all dinks. today was my first day really commiting to throwing big baits and it was fucking awesome. a few small ones will still hit em but the overall average was soo much better.
the first time in a bass boat is kinda scary haha. being that low to the water going that fast is definitely a weird feeling

yeahh im totally looking forward to it. only bringing my best 3 rods tho lol
Pulled the trigger on a 7'2" MLXF 13 Envy Black spinning rod for super light jigs and tiny t rigs etc. Can't wait to use it! Holla 2-day shipping for $5!
The 4 rod quiver is where I have to stay. All my bases are covered and I can't possibly carry any more in a kayak.
Shit i always tell myself i dont need 8 rods in the boat with me but i just hate tying new lures on to switch up haha. Ones of these days ill probably step on one and break it or kick one in the water on accident.
Does anyone on here use power pro? Yesterday i was reminded why i stopped using it years ago for bass fishing. Bought some 80lb for my musky setups because its so much cheaper and decided to bring it out and toss some swimbaits with it. That shit is the stiffest line ive ever used, seriously stiffer and kinks more than fluorocarbon, unreal. The stiffness caused backlashes on almost every cast unless i tried to drive my thumb through the damn spool. I only casted around 10 times but on that 10th backlash.... fucking 80lb braid snaps like nothing. Then i just watch as a $35 swimbaits goes flying through the air and to the bottom of the lake. Threw the rest of the 500yd spool away and ordered some fx2. Thatll be the last time i buy any line thats not sunline.
Oh not to mention that shit stain of a line bked all fucking over... everything in my boat was green

Not a fan of PP myself. Feels like cloth and as if it frays super easy.
I like SX1 and FX2 for max durability (but also kind of noisy) however Smackdown is probably my favorite. Strong and quiet all in one and it doesn't jizz green.

Ya i use sx1 and fx2 (love the blue/green) usually. Idk why they made them different though, sx1 bleeds and fx2 doesnt? They are noisy but that doesnt really bother me, i love the limpness straight off the spool and it cuts through grass/weeds/like like no other braid, and it iut casts any other line ive ever used. Bever tried smackdown, guess ill give it a try
I was getting really frustrated and my reel was fucking up so I let all my line out and was just respooling when it hit, the next couple came in a more traditional way
It was a beautiful fish and it makes me want to get out there more and more to actually land one with some size to it, haha
Also, I have a boat dog!
Her first time out on a boat and she seemed to love it. Biggest problem is she whines whenever there isn't a fish on just remind me I'm not catching anything. As soon as something strikes though, she hears the drag clicking and gets stoked!
Makes it a little difficult with an 80 pound dog jumping around on a 12 foot sea nymph but it's a riot
In other news, the bass are finally biting and we haven't caught one shorter than 17 inches
Glad to see everyone had a good weekend. We absolutely slayed the big uns this weekend.
Beautiful walter
Few tank walters. Sorry for blurry pics, was battling 3 foot rollers on the lake
A couple absolute monster northerns
Battling a monster
Absolute stokage
And here she is, not a huge muskie by any means (43 in) but beat my pb by an inch. Was surprised we even got one, there were no weeds yet so they were just roaming everywhere. So we trolled instead of casting and she absolutely hammerd my lure, damn near tore the rod out of my hands. Shot straight up out of the water on the hit too, wish I was weating my gopro but forgot to put it on. Got it in the first 30 mins too. The guy next to us pulled in a 52.5 incher, abolute lake monster
today i was all like.... on some shit little pond I caught the only 2 fish out here is a pic of the short that didnt countof everyone and won the tourny between the 4 of us just for fun, a 12 inch, .67 pound MONSTER!!!
i start working tomorrow aka time to get a drop shot setup, cranking rod, and maybe a swimbait rod!!! booooom!
okay randy howell just brought this too attn on twitter. a lake in maine is having a catch and kill derby for smallmouth to help out the salmon/trout fishing.
give it a fucking look. fish must be killed and no transporting live fish. fuck this.

That is pretty upsetting to see that serious anglers would go out and target a specific species just to kill them. I hope they will at least be eaten.
Based on the very little research ive done on it though I highly doubt one tourny like this will have a detrimental effect on the smallmouth fishing. Still pretty unsettling that anglers would want to do this though. I guess if you want to look at a positive, a smaller population is more conducive to bigger fish.
I would think that if the smallmouth were really that big of a problem the dnr would impose regulations allowing more smallmouth to be kept, like a larger slot, higher bag limit, and opening the season earlier. Its a much more effective plan than trying to slaughter them in a single day, since there really isnt a short term solution.

maine gave them a permit so they are allowed to keep as many as possible. those guys in maine are total fucks, theyll be fishing for 'cold water fish' and just kill smallies or pike and leave them in the water. its just dumb becuase those specific fish bring SO MUCH money to their state for tourism and boat guides etc

So there is no bag limit just for the tourney? The bass fisherman in me absolutely hates that. But the aquatic biologist in me knows that the dnr would not have given out a permit for that if the smallies werent actually considered a problem. Idk how i feel about it.
Lake mille lacs where i was just at just re did the smallie regs because the walleye pop is declining and they say its because the smallies are eating them. I could kinda see it because there seems to be a rise in smallmouth pop. But in that case im pretty sure its actually because they just dont want to admit that the real problem is allowing a certain group of people to net the fuck out of walleye before they even have a chance at spawning
soulskierWhat are all the nicks from?
I cant say 100% but when musky spawn they get scars like that because the males bite and slash at the females to get them to drop their eggs. So in guessing the pike got caught in the middle of that? Or just a fight with another fish.
soulskierI've been having so much fun with my gopro lately, it's all I really use for documenting my fishing trips anymore
same you can get some awesome shots with it
Thats a tiger musky i caught today. First one I ever caught. WAs casting this spot I knew had to have a fish up shallow for 1.5 hours. Finally said fuck this and through a 10XD out in 20 fow, 5 mins later this dude hit.
Excuse the hand gesture, still figuring out the whole posing in front of the gopro thing and didnt get a good shot holding it sideways. Theyre such a beautiful fish, the coolest looking freshwater fish imo.
Decent northern. again gotta figure out my angles haha
soulskierI tend to use the time lapse set at .5 seconds when I catch a fish
Set it up on the dock/bank/boat and of the 60 pics it takes in 30 seconds I'm sure to like at least one of them
ya i video then take a screenshot. I just kinda mounted it funny on my boat so its hard to get right in front of it and its pretty low. Think i just have to put another mount somewhere else
soulskierWhat can one do with a bait caster that can't be done with spin gear?
certain situations would make spin reel better. like drop shotting or trout fishing. baitcast is better for heavy baits and thick line like braid, quicker hooksets i feel like, im still getting used to it, i have spin reels in my arsenal too
soulskierWhat can one do with a bait caster that can't be done with spin gear?
Spin is generally for lighter applications, lighter stretchy line and lighter drag, when you would work a fish into the boat over time by wearing them down with the drag. Spin also let's you cast light baits farther and they don't bird nest.
BC's generally have a much higher drag and heavier lines for use in heavier cover or when you have braid or setting big-ass hooks. I use them when I want to muscle a fish in rather than let them turn their head and run the drag out or battle them. They also do not twist the line like some spin reels can, so for heavy FC swim baiting etc it would be a big advantage.
Of course there are many many variations and times when what I said above does not apply but that's the basic idea.
I wish frogs worked on the lakes i fish. Maybe i just dont do it enough.
Went to the store to get my bro a musky rod for his birthday. They were half off so i ended up leaving with 2 haha. I had zero need for one bit half off a musky rod that has a lifetime warranty.... couldnt resist

Nah you definitely can't force them, I just seek out places that have prevalent heavy cover because I love it so much.
Also used my flash carp slide swimmer for the first time today and it caught fish so that was fkn sweet.
Got out for a little bit today. Got one decent one and a few dinks.
Also that hat I'm wearing I just got from Costco- it is enormous. Looks like I just got out of a rice paddy haha... Very light and breezy tho and it's like wearing an umbrella. Love that thing. Best $15 I've spent in a while.
