Letters for Noah. (READ ASAP)

I just wrote to Noah this morning. Won't you consider sending a letter of support too?


"My son Noah is 12 years old. On February 8 he will be 13. A teenager at last. This past weekend he posted on his Instagram account that he was planning to commit suicide on his birthday. He also posted images of his arm where he has been cutting himself for the past two months.

Noah has been dealing with bullying for the past year. He has been feeling alone and left out, ostracized from old friends and a misfit among new kids. Things begin to get better, and then another setback. He was once the life of the party among his friends; big man on campus at his first elementary school. Now his self esteem has disappeared.

Noah has been in therapy. I have been doing my very best. But he is in pain. I can't do this alone.

Noah is getting treatment in a hospital now. But it is still not enough. He needs people to rally. Which is why I've created this page, Letters for Noah. I thought of it last night in the ER when I couldn't sleep. Noah needs to know that He Matters and that It Does Get Better. So many people have been asking me how they can help. Well, this is how:

Today I opened a P.O. Box. I am asking you and your kids to send Noah letters with a message of hope, telliing him not to give up. Help him see that He Matters and that It Does Get Better. Please send your letters to:

There is a +/- voting system at the top of every thread. This thread is currently at +3. I said if it gets to +150 I will quit forever. It's probably a better cause than writing a bunch of pointless letters anyway haha.

I bet this kid's an attention whore. Actually, it's not even a bet; this kid is an attention whore.

Nonetheless, if he is actually going to kill himself he should probably be put into a psych ward for a while and cool off. He's really not helping his situation with his friends. Kids would get ridiculed for stuff like that, especially at his age. I would call him out on it probably, if I knew him. This kid doesn't deserve the attention he's getting, and once it hits 4chan, this kid is going to be receiving a bunch of unwanted penises.

I honestly think this is the problem. Video games.

Not playing video games occasionally. A lot of kids nowadays are on the computer / Xbox all day long, and they play hyper violent, realistic shooters that have no positive influence.

Think about it. When I was a kid I played Kirby's Air Ride for GameCube. So much fun, not violent, no blood, racing game that was addictive, colorful and fun. None of this Call of Duty shit where you get more points for killing more people in a row.

The children of today don't play outside as often. It is incredibly fun to build a tree fort with some good friends. Or play soccer. Nowadays most teens are facebookin' when they should be facing' nature.

Just my two cents on the subject, if anyone really cares. Someone as young as twelve should not have to be bullied. It makes me sick, yes, but they should have these social structures such as outdoor physical activity that take their mind off of the bullying. I am probably just different, and yes I did have a very good home situation with loving parents, but when I was a kid I didn't care about bullying I loved life :)

This. Kids need to learn to play outside and get roughed up. I never turned down an opportunity to play CTF with the neighborhood kids over playing super smash by myself inside. This generation of children is being raised indoors and by electronics which completely inhibit personal contact and communication. If kids were to get outside more and play with their imagination and with nature, the depression rate among young adults would go down.

Sure theres gonna be an outlier and kids that truly get bullied. But right now I feel like most of these cries for help are just attention whoring selfish posts. A random letter from me won't get sent because I'd tell him that I don't know him and have nothing to relate to him but that he needs to man the fuck up and enjoy life. Of course my letter wouldn't make it past the parents so its useless to try.

can you? you literally wrote: "you can't have a condition until you are diagnosed with it." meaning that you can't have cancer until you are diagnosed with it. so, if you don't get diagnosed, you can't have cancer, and if you don't have cancer, you can't die from cancer. you seem upset about it, but you're the one saying these things, not me. i don't know what to tell you.

I think her point was that it isn't a recognized condition until you're diagnosed. Of course you can still have cancer without being diagnosed, but how are you supposed to know its cancer before being diagnosed?

probably. but for some reason she keeps saying "you can't have a condition until you are diagnosed with it." which isn't the same as "it isn't a recognized condition until you're diagnosed." i point out the difference and she gets mad and tells me i'm a "fucking idiot" or that i can't read. i don't get it.

This is precisely my point. And I stick with my point "you can't have a condition until you are diagnosed with it." You don't know you have cancer until you are diagnosed with it. You can have the symptoms of cancer, but it's not cancer until you get the biopsy saying it is cancer.

this sooo much.

i know ill get hate for saying this but bullying is good. kids need to learn how to sack up and get through hard times. I got bullied, i was a looser in 1-4th grade, i was treated like shit, i had my sweatshirt/shirt ripped off on the bus coming home with everyone laughing at me calling me a pussy while i was balling my eyes out. when i got home and told my parents what happened they didnt do shit about it, my dad just asked me what are you gonna do about it. and that was pretty much the turning point, i sacked up and stood up for myself, got beat up a couple times, spit on, etc.. but after awhile they stopped fucking with me, because any time they insulted me, tried to hurt me etc.. Id defend myself..

these days if i was that same looser kid id have the fucking anti bullying squad called in, and have a protective barrier of adults making sure i didnt have to face the horror of real life. then id grow up a little more, get to junior high, where the bullying is way worse, any my teenage emotions and anger are a fucking wreck, everyone has a little more freedom, and i wont have mothers constantly making sure nobody hurt my feelings. and i wont be able to handle it, i would have grown up a little vagina, never having learned to stand up for myself and not let the bullshit get to me, id have the emotional strength of a 4 year old with the fucked up emotions of a 13 year old and id kill myself.

it doesnt even surprise me that kids kill themselves over text messages, these kids have not developed even a hint of emotional toughness, have not had to stick up to themselves once, its all been done for them, so once they get a taste of reality, they cant handle it and snap.

the best thing we could do is ignore it, let the kids insult each other, get in fights, etc.. it might sound cruel, but thats what i grew up with, and i didnt hear about one suicide in my town through all of junior high/highschool. and now we hear about multiple suicides a year.

just like you said our culture has become so over-sensitized, everything you do is offensive, you cant have an opinion without offending somebody. your expected to be so accepting of everything and everyone and all its doing is creating a culture of weak, entitled, pussies who cant deal with real life.

Every teenager nowadays has the idea that they have to feel like the universe revolves around them, that they are special. This is brought about by the parents, our society, customs etc. Kids need to realize that the universe does NOT revolve around them and the sheer fact that they are alive and well is a miracle upon itself.

Truth is, this kid could kill himself and nothing would be any different. For his parents yes, and maybe some kids at school. But that's it.

So why exactly are they begging to strangers who don't know him, and for the most part, don't give a shit about him?

As controversial as this post is, I somewhat agree with you based on my past experiences with bullying. If it wasn't for the fact that I was bullied for about a year and a half in middle school I think I would be much worse of a person. Although I can't say that I'm grateful for it, I can say that it eventually left a positive mark on myself and I'm glad it's over so nothing of the sort will ever happen again. For me it was like the chicken pox, you get it once and your body learns how to never get it again. It sucked that it happened but since it's done and over with you'll never heave to worry about it thereafter. Although this is definitely not at all the case 100% of the time, I'm glad it worked out this way for me.

I agree with you entirely except i think the world will continue to coddle him and that thats exactly whats wrong with the world. Fuck it in todays times you get a trophy for just showing up and not even trying.

I wont be writing this kid a letter unless its to tell him to man up and change the zhit he doesnt like about himself, shit it even says in the first post he used to be "the big man on campus"

I kind of wonder why kids have started to become like this. I think it might have to do with how overprotective parents are getting of their kids at a young age. Parent's and teachers are so worried about bullying that they never allow kids to even tease each other. I feel like this just raises kids that can't handle the transition into the real world that happens through high school.

I also hope people understand that there are people that are legitimately depressed and aren't just being attention whores. In these cases however, they probably wouldn't be posting about it on the internet.

yeah thats a better way of putting it, bullying isnt a good thing, but being able to get through it and better yourself in the process IS a good thing. what our modern parents/society are doing is taking a bad thing, trying to prevent it, and making the result much more harmful when they cant prevent it. before you get bullied and at most you get beat up or made fun of at school and went home and cried about it. now we may be preventing that a lot more, but now when it does happen, kids are cutting and killing themselves like crazy.

Bullying/treating others poorly is human nature, hell its nature in general, what creature doesnt treat others poorly? it happens, it always will happen, you need to learn t o deal with it. there is no advantage in sheltering children from it only to expose them to it later on.

then i'll stick with my point that, if you follow this argument through to its logical conclusion, no one would ever get sick or die from an illness as long as they didn't go to a hospital to get a diagnoses when they were showing symptoms of said illness.

why not? maybe not in the same way, maybe not threatening to kill themselves on their birthday. but it's a hard thing to talk to someone about face-to-face sometimes, and the internet provides easy access to tell people how you feel while taking away the element of having to look into someone's eyes as you say it.

a lot of people are talking about how the internet is making kids soft, but doesn't it seem just as plausible that kids have been feeling this way forever but simply had no outlet to reach a mass audience before the internet was invented so we didn't hear about it as much?

some people are also saying that bullying is good, that it teaches you to have thick skin and learn how to handle tough situations in life. but the only reason kids bully is because our culture teaches us that having some qualities you can't control makes you a better person than someone without those qualities when it simply isn't true. people accept bullying because it is easier to say: "oh well, kids just have to deal with it and it's good because it will teach them important life lessons," than it is to say: "we should take another look at our culture and try to change the way people perceive each other and how tolerant/accepting people are of others so we can teach our kids these same values instead of letting them be mean to the kids that we teach them have less desirable traits."

people say that bullying is good because it teaches you how to deal with tough situations later in life, but there is a big difference between having a boss be mad at you for work related problems, or losing friends over a disagreement, or losing a significant other because of basic idealogical differences, and being told that something about yourself that you have no control over is inherently bad and that, because you have this trait, there is something fundamentally wrong with you as a person

I feel like kids like this are probably the nerds/geeks/losers who don't have many friends at school, so they grow up on XBox Live and chatrooms, forums, etc. The internet IS "real life" to them. I'm not defending that in any way, and actually think it's quite pathetic, but it's just another way to look at it.
