Letters for Noah. (READ ASAP)

I just wrote to Noah this morning. Won't you consider sending a letter of support too?


"My son Noah is 12 years old. On February 8 he will be 13. A teenager at last. This past weekend he posted on his Instagram account that he was planning to commit suicide on his birthday. He also posted images of his arm where he has been cutting himself for the past two months.

Noah has been dealing with bullying for the past year. He has been feeling alone and left out, ostracized from old friends and a misfit among new kids. Things begin to get better, and then another setback. He was once the life of the party among his friends; big man on campus at his first elementary school. Now his self esteem has disappeared.

Noah has been in therapy. I have been doing my very best. But he is in pain. I can't do this alone.

Noah is getting treatment in a hospital now. But it is still not enough. He needs people to rally. Which is why I've created this page, Letters for Noah. I thought of it last night in the ER when I couldn't sleep. Noah needs to know that He Matters and that It Does Get Better. So many people have been asking me how they can help. Well, this is how:

Today I opened a P.O. Box. I am asking you and your kids to send Noah letters with a message of hope, telliing him not to give up. Help him see that He Matters and that It Does Get Better. Please send your letters to:

seriously. the amount of little fuckwads on youtube with their stupid fucking index cards crying with depressing top 40 hit in the background about how they're bullied at school makes me wish that natural selection still fucking applied to the human race.

Yup, they both have iPhones..... Jesus Christ, I know. I guess it's all relative though because when I was in middle school I knew like one person with an iPhone. I got my first cell phone in 7th grade and my first iPhone sophomore year of high school. Both seemed really early for older kids/people and even my other brother who's only 2 years older than me. Technology just moves so damn quick... And it's not like it's that much more expensive to have a smart phone anymore. My family of 6 is all on a family plan so changing my little siblings' "normal" phones to iPhones costs my parents something like 10 or 20 bucks more a month. It's pretty much turned into a statement of your family's wealth, whether or not the kids have iPhones, since every kid 10 and older has one.

On a side note, one of my teachers last year bought his FOURTH GRADE daughter an iPhone. He kept asking us if he should buy her one before he did and we all said no but he did anyway. He is the biggest pushover I've ever met so she probably convinced him. He's an incredibly nice guy though.

i mean, i'm sure their problems are real and i'm sure they effect the kids heavily but complaining about it on the internet like that is stupid.

yes there comes a point where it is beneficial to TALK about your problems with someone or some group of people, but there is never a point where complaining will help.

Beezy and Gus: the kid wasn't cyber bullied, it doesn't say that. It says he was regular bullied.

And I don't think you have any right to look down on this situation and call it bullshit. You may have been through some similar or relatable shit but you don't know these people and you don't know their circumstances. If you don't like it, ignore it, or make another thread about how we're all a bunch of wieners these days.

If taking ten minutes out of my day has the potential to help this kid out, then for sure I'll do it. I know there are tons of people on the verge of suicide who won't get letters, but that doesn't mean that this kid shouldn't. If the letters don't do shit, then fine, I wasted ten minutes. But a) if I was going through anything like this, I would want to know that people care, and b) getting over being "babied" seems (disclaimer: I say seems because I have no experience with this type of mental illness and would like my wording to reflect that) easier slash more doable than getting over whatever problems are causing him to turn to suicide.

Because to be quite honest, another explanation, equally reasonable, is that kids are using it not for attention but as an outlet. Back in the day, people wrote their troubles down on paper. Now, people do it on computers. A profile on any site is a reflection of the person behind it. It makes sense that if the person behind it is hurting, the profile will show that.

Granted, I see what you're saying, and I understand the "attention-getting" action. I just think that you're looking at it one way and I'm looking at it another.

I honestly think this is so true. Its become romanticized... A kid kills themselves and then they get immortalized in the news and become a symbol for social justice and equality all over the country. Kind of fucked up.

I think we see the same thing with school shootings. Over-reporting of school shootings is just encouraging people to do it more. Its generalizations like "kids with no friends and people suffering from mental illnesses are prone to shooting up their school," that give people the idea. The other possibility is that school shootings are just being reported more often now, but I don't think thats the case.

Noah got 44 letters today... I think I'll save my time and postage stamp sending him a letter, but only because he's getting more than enough support. Hope he turns out OK.

I hate to be that guy but this doesn't seem like the right way to go about this at all. I mean I can understand being frustrated and wanting to do stuff for your kid but how me sending him a letter going to help anything.


Anybody who posts pictures of themselves cutting themselves or that they plan to kill themselves just wants attention. I'm not saying it's not serious, I mean there can be some pretty fucked up shit going on, but generally people who really want to kill themselves just do it.


Honestly if I get to that point I'm just going to off myself and people can read about it in the paper. Fuck posting on facebook that nobody loves me and I just swallowed 5 baby tylenol and put on hawthorne heights.


I mean I hope things get better for this kid, I hope things get better for everyone but me sending him a letter won't help. Also great that now he'll always be the kid who posted pictures of arms on the internet and mom or dad posted all over the internet telling people about it.

Am I being too harsh? I just hate all these facebook "like if you think she's pretty" or all the other shit the internet has brought up. I wish nothing bad on him or anyone else, I'm just against this fucked up twisted sort of "caring" that the internet partakes in.

Also if it wasn't so hyped up I feel like there would be a lot less people cutting themselves, anorexia, and other shit. I'm not saying that everyone does it for attention, but I bet it's a big factor in a lot of the cases.


I just don't like people trolling for sympathy. "I'm so ugly" No you weren't you're beautiful. Yeah you're so pretty. I wish I looked as good as you. Don't worry you're so pretty. Omg I love your hair.

It amazes me to see how extreme some of you guys are on the issue of suicide. That being said if someone's life is really bad enough that they want to kill themselves who am I to say they can't. Even though I do believe it is very selfish if one does this without trying to get help and find the good side of life.

For instance the saying used to be "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me" A while back the started to discourage using that statement, but its true, words only hurt you if you let them.

I will try to write when I get around to it. I know some of what hes feeling. My parents reminded me day after day to study for my math midterm. I needed a really good grade. I thought I did well. I got a 60. My average is ruined and now the max I can get is about an 85 or so. People honestly make fun of me so much, that its now a joke to everyone. Everyone who likes me and my friends even make fun of me constantly. You just gotta learn to say "I don't need them" because honestly, I don't give a flying fuck about what people say to me. I'm living a great life.

I don't really like disagreeing with Reese and agreeing with beezey, especially when she's calling someone out for being an attention whore.

But yeah, everyone goes through that shit. Hate to be blunt, but you just gotta deal with it, what that letter described is just part of life.

It doesn't matter what a person defines depressed and sad as. That's his entire point, it's the medical community that is supposed to diagnose depression. Until it is diagnosed it is not depression. As beezey put it webmd vs hospital. Age doesn't matter. I disagree that he is naive and closed minded and to call someone you don't know naive and closed minded really reflects on your own maturity.

Physical illnesses can't be compared with mental.

Every 12 year old that feels rejected or lonely will tell you they're depressed. And not that many actually are.

The mother is the pathetic one. What was her original plan, to just sit and watch him kill himself? If he wants to kill himself, get him help. If he tries to kill himself, physically stop him.

Because there are no general, obvious signs of mental health problems. If you cut yourself, you'll bleed. But if you secretly hate yourself or are depressed, it's very possible to live like nothing is wrong.

The second part you mentioned is the problem. Too many people fail to care for themselves mentally.

true, but if you secretly hate yourself or are depressed you will still feel those things and those are the signs, right?

not sure what you mean, but i think you agree with me? she said that, until you get if officially diagnosed, you can't have depression. my point was that that definitely isn't true, and, frankly, a pretty naive/stupid thing to say/believe.

excellent! spread the news! tell everyone that if they don't go to a hospital to get their tumors checked out they can't die from them! and all these years doctors have been telling us not to ignore signs that we might have certain diseases when all this time the best thing to do IS ignore them! i don't know why you have been keeping this medical revelation a secret, think how many lives you could have saved already.

You're a fucking idiot. Of course you can still die from it... but it doesn't become cancer until it's tested and proven to be cancerous. You can have a benign tumour that looks exactly the same as a malignant tumour. You seem to misunderstand what diagnosis is. You can't have a condition until you are actually diagnosed with it. You can have the symptoms of the condition (Ie, how it is diagnosed and what you aren't supposed to ignore so you can get diagnosed) but until a medical professional says you have it, you can't say you have it. You could be wrong.
Everyone goes through depressed stages of their lives, that does not mean they have depression. Otherwise you would be able to walk into a pharmacy and get antidepressants because you feel depressed but haven't been diagnosed with it.

right, so, by that logic, if you have tumors but never test to see if they are cancerous or not you can't have cancer because you have never been diagnosed with it, and the tumors will be unable to kill you.

having a condition and KNOWING you have a condition are two different things. if you have cancer and don't get tested, yeah, you can't go around telling your friends you have cancer, but that isn't going to stop the cancer from killing you. same with depression. if you are depressed but don't get tested, then, yeah, you can't go around saying you are clinically depressed, but that doesn't mean you aren't going to suffer from the depression.

This is fucking retarded. The kid needs to be placed in an inpatient psych facility and medicated if he is truly suicidal, not sit around with his mom and read a bunch of bullshit letters from people on the internet. Fuck shit like this.

In this case I think you could argue that actions based in naivety will give the same result as actions based in idealism. One could write a letter in complete ignorance of the fact that the kid may just be an attention whore. OR one could write a letter acknowledging the possibility of attention-whoring but realizing that a) if the kid is an attention-whore, a letter will mean nearly nothing (and it costs one almost nothing), and b) if the kid really is in need of help, the letter could have an impact far bigger than one could imagine.

I think that the risk of feeding the suicide troll is worth the investment (time/money) into writing a letter for the potential benefit of changing a life. There is very little cost to me to do this.

If more and more kids do this? Probably none; I expect by the time they do it will likely be a noted and documented trend of attention-whoring. Besides, if this wasn't posted on NS, I wouldn't have heard about it...

Anyways, the difference is that the kid's mom did this. And I doubt that she's attention-whoring, because she's not the one getting the attention. If kids start doing it themselves in the future, well then that's some shit - pretty easy to see through, right? Maybe not, because you can never really know, but at that point it becomes much easier to draw the attention-whoring conclusion than the truly suffering one.
