Honestly why buy ski movies any more?

With all the edits online now why even pay for movies? Sure one can say it is to support the companies, but ever movie feels the same year in year out.  Why not save the money and just enjoy the creative and awesome free edits online that are better than must movies.

because a lot of the time, athletes save their bangers for the movies. that, plus higher travel budgets, etc., make them a lot better. i would rather watch something like sunny, with a whole season worth of content, and private park shoots with rediclous features, than watch a edit of b&e lapping the breck park over and over

I've given this a lot of thought before. i sort of agree, but i also love premiers, maybe not as much as i did when i was little, but everyone is so stoked for the season.

My other thought is that filmers/producers of webisodes need a way to make money better. I can almost guarantee you shows like Traveling Circus and Skifi provide a far bigger audience than a smaller production ski movie. They also have no cost to promote and all they need is to upload their video, while premiers take planning and at least some sort of upfront cost to be worthwhile. Not sure if ads are the way to make money for webisodes or sponsorship financial backing, but definitely think that is more the future of ski film making.

I started a collection before it all became so accessible. I guess that's the main reason I still do. Plus, I don't have nearly as big of a screen on my comp. I mean I do use apple tv to get a lot of the internet content on my tv, but it starts to feel "tedious" clicking through all the edit. I do enough edit watching at work. Maybe I'm just lazy, but I like to just throw in a dvd or blu-ray and chill on the couch at home.

I usually buy a ski flick when im on a trip with friends. Stop by whatever local ski shops, pick up something I don't have in my collection, and then use it to psych up while getting ready the next morning.

dude. ski movies are sooooooo much better. There's only a few edits that I really enjoy and they're short, nothing compared to any of the movies coming out. Such a dumb thread.

While i do agree that the OP has somewhat of a good point, I think by not supporting movies you are in the end just plan missing out. While webisodes are great, there is just no substitute for more feature length films like All I Can and Few Words. Watch either of those and its pretty easy to justify the twenty odd dollars.

I gotta say, popping a ski DVD and watching it on a big TV is just way more satisfying. It also allows you to relax longer and get into a bit more than a shorter video. Having said that, I also really enjoy webisode series and standalone edits, but sort of for a different reason that I couldn't pinpoint. Also, I love having a collection of actual ski DVDs.

lets be real here dude, are you serious? thats the worst example of a good ski movie from this year that you could give. Sorry but I dont think Iberg did a very good job with that at all.

Most edits are 100% park footage and I find them incredibly repetitive and borderline boring. Most ski videos are urban/bc booters/mini golf lines. If ski videos could get over their addiction with the park segment every year it would make them way, way more legit. I've said it before but: I don't think there should be a single shot in a ski video of a feature that required a groomer to make.

You try getting ski video calibre skiing in a free edit, it's just not realistic.

I hate reading threads like this and see how people are just so stupid to understand that at the end of the day, there's a team that has to earn money for a living. Making movies isn't free, unless in your world it is. Do you think it's normal to get fines when you don't pay your parking ticket ? That's not normal to me, but paying for a movie, rather it's skiing or not is essential. Why paying for skis 400$ worth out of the factory 150$ ??

I guess most of you don't realize the HARD work behind movies, what you actually see, is maybe 10% of the overall work put into it. So please, be nice and pay for your movies.

i agree with this and will add that we dont buy ski movies to just watch them. we buy them to support the individuals who make them and the skiers who are in them. I will always buy the level 1 and pbp films. if TGR or Matchstick make a good flick for the year, ill buy that as well.

I talk ski movies, it's important to support them because without them, skiing would have never been what it is today.
If you don't pay for a Torantino movie or other, who cares, the price of the movie is payedback at least 4 or 5 time it's cost, we talk millions/billions here.

Well, its the same question: Why do people still go to the movies when you can download it a month later?
Riders buys the movies (on principle) to support the community, to see what is going on in the industry.

production companies that aren't doing a specific type of skiing (urban,big mt, superpark, etc.) should really try and get back the "feel good" vibe that we all got before WME got extremely shitty. Who remembers those films and how awesome they were to watch?

I agree with you man, and it's something I've been talking with my brother about for the last couple years. I think in the next few years ski movies will be free due to the sport getting a lot more exposure (ie. olympics) Advertisers are going to start spending big bucks to be a part of a production (not that they already aren't.)

You see new footage on Newschoolers everyday though and usually you'll get a skier everyday posting a video that is on the same caliber as any pro out there. I personally like those kids from Finland? I forget what the series is called but they're doing more creative shit than I saw in any ski movie last year.

Most park segments feel almost cheesy and out of place in ski movies. There have been a few park-like segments that I enjoy, but if I want to watch Bobby Brown lap breck I'll just tune in somewhere else.
