Fear of Airplanes

I hate airplanes. I hate them so damn much. I don't understand why I hate to fly either. I guess it's the fear of helplessness while up there. On the way to Jackson Hole, I was freaking out on this little commuter that was getting tossed around. Seriously. And I have to fly on the 20th to Whistler. Anyone else have this problem or have any advice?

i love to fly actualy its safer then driving so ya. just relax and don't think bout it... hell get high before you get on it might help haha

flying is so easy for me, the only time i have ever gotten scared is when my plane go close to a plane in front of it at about 300 feet ofr the ground, and it turned 90 degrees sidways, i was looking straith out the window and saw ground, so scary, then it righted and we kept on going. the lady next to me cried the rest of the way.

yea I dig flying. Although when I went to the states last year, approaching LAX we hit a huge ass rain shower. For 20 minutes we were dropping like a stone and rising again. This was 20 minutes after we had breakfast (I had this sickening french toast).

I swear, one more big drop and I would have barfed everywhere. I think everyone else was like that looking at their faces.

But yea...If I ever get worried the wings will fall off...I just remind myself that these things have suddenly dropped hundreds of feet without having the wings damager...so it's all good :)

i love flying!! but i have +30hrs flight next month and that might be too much.. but short distances are cool, especially when its thunder outside and the plane is shaking and falling and rising

i hate flying just 'cause it's a huge hastle... the act of flying don't bug me (it's just hella boring if you gotta go long distances by yourself). I've grown up on airplanes. been flying all my life (average of about 3 trips/year on a plane), so I don't understand how someone could be scared while flying.

Flying out of Denver a few years ago there was a huge windstorm and our plane was already delayed, but in a short calmness we tried to take off - just as we lifted off a huge gust of wind hit the plane and we first flew back and the tail almost hit the ground than we got blown to the side and the wing almost hit... would have sucked if the wing it 'cause than the plane would crash and blow up and it would have made my day just a little worse.

but yea, don't worry about flying. just get a middle seat, sit down, bring something to read, make friends with people while waiting to get on the flight than hang out with them while on the plane, watch the movie/tv show or whatever they are playing on your flight at the time, and sleep is always good... i dont' know. the part of flying that i dont' like is getting to the arrival airport and having it be the first time you are there and having no clue where shit is...

I despise flying, but not because of the gremlin on the wing, I just get so bored. The seats are uncomfortable, people invade my personal bubble, my legs get cramped, and after a bit I start to get clostrophobic (sp?). Then my ears pop repeatedly during take off and landing, the food sucks, and in the airports there's so much waiting in lines and the fear that you'll get strip searched, and get unwanted things in unwanted places.

Yeah, I'm definitly going to toke up before I go. Hmmm..my flight leaves at 6:30AM...hmmm...looks like a wake and bake.

I feel like if anything were to go wrong, I would be helpless. Its like guarenteed death if you're high enough. Everyone tells me its safer than driving, but it still scares me. I guess if you get into a car wreck, you can live. If you're in a plane crash, you're dead....

and you're in control in the car for the most part. the hardest thing about flying is you give up control 100%. you just have to trust the plane is gonna work and the pilots can fly it safely. I just hate rough landings, when it's real windy, or landing in fog or a big thunderstorm. that's never fun.

i've flown all my life...i used to live in saudi arbia and the flight from there to new york is 13 hours plus another 6 to calgary its gay...
but my dad his flying licence so i go flying with him in little airplanes sometimes it s wicked,,

Just how will you ever go heli-skiing if you are afraid of airplanes? Well anyway, just bring a lot to do. Bring music, things to read, puzzles, whatever to take your mind off the trip. That should make it easier

Try a 13 hour non-stop flight. In economy on united airlines.

THAT was boring. Thankgod it was a night flight so I was tired enough to sleep for a few hours.

the best suggestion i have, and this'll sound stupid, is fly drunk or take 2 nyquil before you get on the plane (or if you have a tolerance like me 4) and it'll put you out...add a shot of jd if its a long flight, but only w/1 nyquil. its not so bad, when i left big sky a few years ago they unloaded the 70 person express jet down to 40 b/c it was windy and they didn't want the plane to be too heavy...that sucked flying that one. also, flying into the jet stream in a 2 propeller northwestern jet to iowa city, iowa in high winds. i have more stories if you wanna be terrified, but the last one is, when i was like 4 or so there was a dc 10 that was 36,000 feet in the air and the left engine just fell off the plane and crashed and of course everyone died...no fire...the engine just fell off. they grounded all dc 10s except of course those already in the air...like ours...the shitty part was knowing it had happened b/c they had live news on our plane on the tv broadcast screen...thank god i was like 4 and was too dumb to know what was going on. you'll be fine

I'm not scared of helicopters, just planes. They're closer to the ground. Wanna know the real weird part? I don't get scared until I can't see the ground anymore. As long as I can see the ground, I'm fine. You would think seeing the ground from so far up would freak me out. Is the Whistler flight rough? Dude, I'm freaking out at the thought of 5 hours in a damn plane. hmmm...but Nyquil, very interesting. You can't be scared if you're not awake. Getting high is a good idea, but I get paranoid coming off a high. That would suck when i realize I'm on a plane I think I'll just take some Nyquil. Good suggestion

Make sure you bring headphones, and soemthing else to do. A good book or a magazine. Also try to sleep on the flight if you can.

I flew to Singapore for 19 hrs in coach, and the plane hit heavy turbulance at least 5 times. If I can do that, you can fly to whistler.

yeh planes dont bother me to much, like on my way from mineapolis to whistler, which is like a 4-5 hour flight, and it was at night, i just closed my eyes and listened to some cds for a bit and then watched office space on my laptop. if you can have somethin to watch a movie on, it helps you not think about everything around you. atleast it did for me

i fly all the time and love it...the food gets nasty after a while but meeting new people is always really cool. probably the only thing i don't like is when you come down and your ears pop cuz it hurts like a bitch for me...i've cried numerous times it hurts so much...but when i went to cali about a month ago my ears weren't messed up at all so maybe im over that

If it's a long flight, I do not suggest drinking. The elevation dehydrates you, and so does alcohol. It's kinda cool for a cheap buzz, but you'll be asking for jetlag (which is caused by dehydration). I imagine it would feel like you're hungover for a good few days, and probably just not worth it.

eh i don't know...my friend brian class got drunk at the 7 11 in whistler and woke up on the bench drunk off his ass on the picnic table outside, packed his stuff up, flrew home and was completely passed out on the ride home and got up fine. but then again, i don't know many people who're alcoholics at 16

flying is pretty cool. i have my commercial pilots license and have been flying since i was 16 (i am now 24). i've had a couple closs calls (although not while i was piloting the plane) but nothing that would scare me off.

here is scary thought. by somewhere near 2008 there will so much air traffic that a major air crash (300 people dead or so) will occur once a week on average, and yet it will still be the safest way to travel.

go figure....
