OregonDeadJust noticed that the 3lb bags of Rogers Family Organic Rainforest blend are going on sale at Costco Sept 8th. Time for me to stock up on beans.
it takes a long time to go through that much coffee

I guess it just depends on how many bags you buy. I go through a 3lb bag in just a couple weeks. The limit you to just 3 bags but that is per visit so I'll probably buy 3 bags the first day of the sale and then 3 more when the sale ends October 5th.

I guess I am religious about drinking coffee within 10 days of the roast date (I roast my own coffee in 8 oz batches)

That sounds delicious. I don't have time for that though. Also I'm a coffee addict so I have to make some compromises to keep down the cost. Right now I'm drinking cold french press coffee that I brewed 6 hours ago.

I've hated coffee my whole life but in the last couple years I've been working in the brewery have changed things for me.
My palate is a lot better so I can taste things other than the overwhelming bitter flavor.
I've also made a couple cold press coffee beers that I have really enjoyed. The best one I have made was indonesian coffee with oak in an ESB. yummy.
I finally bit the bullet and bought a grinder and a press. We've got a great coffee roaster in town called Duluth Coffee Company. I'm digging some of the Indonesian and African coffees they roast. nice and fruity.
I'm only doing cold press for now. I'm not a big hot drink kind of guy. Should be an interesting hobby for me to go along with the brewing.

Maybe Ice drips are something for you.
That 4+ hour waiting time before realising you fucked up the grind is nice.
Can anyone recommend me some good coffee beans I can get online? I have a mini French press in my dorm room that needs to see more use, and I don't really want to invest in a grinder. Or would a pour over setup be better?

best bet is to find a local roaster! nothing beats coffee roasted recently, and in the same climate as the final beverage.
My $30 grocery store flat burr grinder thats barely passable for french press needs to go. TBH I can't believe it hasn't broken yet.
Is anyone using a Breville smart pro or dose control? I'm mainly brewing espresso, some press. Both are on sale for 30% off on Amazon. Seems like the same burr system, so I'm not sure if the price/features is worth it for the Pro?

the smart grinder pro is a sick grinder. tons of great features. it's smarter, which allows you to really dial in
TheyCallMeElderGot my new french press today and am loving it! Totally different ball game and I'm in over my head.
Any tips or tricks you've found to be useful in brewing a good cup with french presses??
pouring a little hot (not boiling) water over the grind and letting the (freshly, fairly coarse ground) coffee to bloom and then give it a little stir to make sure all the coffee has come into contact with water increasing the bloom before you pour in the rest of the water. leave it for at least 4 mins to brew with a couple of stirs to make sure all the coffee is wetted out and transferred all the coffee goodness, plunge controlled and slowly after your brew time and then pour your cup. its worth experimenting with different grind settings as too fine and you can over-extract the coffee and you can end up with dishwatery coffee and too coarse and you end up with weak ass coffee and its just about finding a balance.
the fresher the coffee the better and buying in beam form and grinding yourself makes a big difference to the freshness. i go full retard and have single origin roasted the day before i get it in bean form, hand ground with ceramic burr grinder but thats just cos things have gotten a little out of hand but i love it!
If anyone has a Keurig, I strongly recommend the San Francisco Bay variety pack that they have on Amazon. It's cheap, and by far the best coffee I've ever had out of a Keurig.

A nicely polished golden Vauxhall Astra diesel is still a Vauxhall Astra diesel.

I had to do some googling to know what you were saying hahah but I completely agree. Unfortunately, I'm very limited as far as space goes due to the fact that I'm in a dorm, but once I move off campus next year I'll have a lot more space to upgrade. Any suggestions on affordable espresso machines? I have a hario grinder that I'm content with for the time being.

Do you like French Press? A Bodum is pretty inexpensive and IMO it brews a pretty great cup of the San Francisco Bay Rogers Family Organic Rain Forest coffee. I actually prefer french press to espresso. If you go the french press route a dedicated hot water kettle is nice to have too but not necessary.

I have a french press at home that I plan on bringing to school next year but didn't feel like dealing with grinding beans and whatnot in my dorm. Keurig was simply the most efficient option. I love french press, but I also really appreciate a good cappuccino so I'd like to end up with both. $350 is around the most I want to spend on an espresso machine at this point.

2ndhand Silvia.
8 years ago it would have gotten you a new one but the hype is real.
I work at a juice shop in downtown Mankato Minnesota, and my boss has a Chemex that she uses to make her coffee. She brewed me a cup and it made me realize how shittily coffee is often brewed. It was the most flavorful coffee I have ever tasted, with no bitterness.
The water is at 200 degrees, and the grind was somewhere between medium to fine, never asked. But after tasting that coffee I've been looking into getting a Chemex, an electronic kettle so I can get to 200 degrees every time, and a grinder that doesn't suck dick.

the grinder is 50%, quality of coffee 25%, water quality 15-20%, and brewing technique makes up the difference.
I love chemex, but with good coffee, the right grinder and settings, I can make a killer cup of coffee with a pyrex measuring cup and a cheese grater.
A hand grinder is a good way to start (around $50), but I would suggest an entry level bur grinder, something like a baratza encore($130 brand new, but I bought one on craigslist for $45 several years ago) if you're going to get an electric grinder, do not get anything cheaper than a baratza encore. You really want a Mahlkonig EK43, I have one at home and it was worth every penny. Better bur machinery and engine capacity will absolutely enhance the taste of the coffee and allow you dial in the coffee with insane detail, which is why the EK43 is worth it.
As far as kettles go, a gooseneck helps with pourover accuracy but any thin-neck kettle on the stove will work. The water should be 200-180 degrees, so 10-30 seconds off the boil.
I just started roasting my own coffee, which was the best decision ever. I roast enough for the week on Sunday, and the coffee it makes is some of the best I've ever had. Even using the shitty water in my dorm and $25 hand grinder, it's terrific. Anyone else do this?

I love my new Stinker Station mug. I've been using it basically non-stop since I drove through Idaho last week. I used to have one that said, "Crazy about Idaho? We have straight jackets in all sizes." This one is not as cool as my old one but it still has a Skunk on it and it's made in the USA too.
just ordered my dad a subscription to the single origin blend from bluebottle coffee for his birthday. anyone subscribe to bluebottle before? what should i/he expect?

I'm not subscribed to them, but have had a few bags of their espresso blend. It was really good. I'd have high expectations for whatever you get from them.
Aaaron.I just bought an EK43 for my house/future endeavors
That's a fucking gnarly grinder. Guy was saying it has like 1700rpm at 60 Hz which absolutely fucked for a coffee grinder.
I picked up a Yama vacpot the other day. Mostly to show how sophisticated I am as well as to impress the Danish girls.
I stopped at cowboy coffee in Jackson while driving up to move to Whitefish and fell in love. Thier french roast is definitely in top 5 cups of coffee I've ever had. I can't get over it and I'm about to order at least a few pounds.
So I recently ground coffee with a mortar and pestle cause i didnt have my grinder with me, was the most uneven grind imaginable, poured it into almost boiling water in a pan, let it sit and stirred it for maybe 5 minutes, and just "filtered" it by draining it between the pan and lid. and it was some of the best damn coffee i've ever had. and this is coming from a pretty big coffee nerd.
Just thought i'd share that, try it.

if i'm too lazy to use a burr grinder i'm way to lazy to bust out my mortar and pestle

the ek43 is everything. perfect particle size, perfect distribution, and it spins really fast, which has all sorts of benefits for the grind. also, i drank a siphon of an Colombian Agua Claras earlier today. You should buy a halogen heating element for it, worth every penny. https://prima-coffee.com/equipment/hario/bgsn-350u
