Pain thresholds?

been thinking about this for a while, before i started skiing i was a complete pussy with injuries but since then i seem to have been able to cope with injuries better, walking home with a broken leg as an example

so my question is, does obtaining an injury increase your pain threshold?

Like the old saying goes,

"Theres a fine line between badass and dumbass."

But from what I've dealt with, face first on moguls, landing flat on my back off of mogul airs, it definitely increases my pain threshold. When I go to the park and fall after a long day of doing nothing but eating shit in the moguls, the park landings feel like pillows.

the answer is yes. Pain is an mental response therefor it is relative. The worse pain you feel the more you will be able to tolerate. And that is why you should always remember to beat your children

fun facts: listening to your favorite music can up your pain threshold by as much as 150%, and also handling money can as well (like just touching money)

hey, i have a shitton of vics left over from random surgeries where my pain threshold was high enough that i didn't need them. If i take a fall while skiing that ranks 9/10 on the pain scale (dislocated shoulder) why the hell shouldn't i take one to ease the pain. my description works more appropriately for longboarding falls where a fall at 20mph can leave you wishing you were dead. pop a vic and you can be back out cruising around.

If you can pop right up after you fall than you are fine. I have taken some decently gnarly falls and have popped right up and not been hurt to my surprise. I think you just get used to random slipping out from switching up or sticking to a box or landing backseat.

i don't really think i'm that tough, but when i broke my leg like two years ago the first thing i said was, i'm fine. i was just sitting there for like 5 minutes, like i'm ok, i'll just walk it off in a minute. i'd never broken anything before, so i didn't think it was broken.

but seriously, i got hurt pretty damn bad a few times as a little kid, ive grone up pretty much going to the hospital at least once a year...

end result, last spring i broke my collarbone on the track and got up and finished the race. i dont think its that badass but alot of people couldnt do that.

oh god iv gone too the ER upwards of ten times. its crazy stupid now. last spring i broke my arm, and stayed around for an hour too film the homies. hospital the next day and found out i hyperextended/broke my elbow. still havent gotten that fixed though, i wanna go too a hospital after my trip too go ride too see if its really still fucked.

haha yeahh.. my uncle has been there. pow skiing + hidden rock + unknowingly straddling it = peeing out of a tube for a few months....

I think that as skiers we all have somewhat higher than average pain tolerances. we are used to impact, falling, smashing body parts off rails, etc. Its all part of the game and something we are accustomed to, whereas your average dude isn't. A particular fall for us would hurt worse for them.

Well hurting your knees doesn't exactly increase your pain threshold, its more of a decrease in their ability.

alright, so i have this skin desease called EB simplex ( actually some big scientific word) and basicley whenerver i get alot of friction anywhere i get alot of blisters, so i cvan tolerate alot of pain compared to most of my friends, i will have this for my whole life and when i get shinbang from skiing i get big blisters on my legs :(

Same with me, it seems like the worse the fall, the quicker I get back up. Some falls where it looks like I should be in a lot of pain I just get numb kinda.

absolutely not. bravery increases your pain threshold i would say. if you started skiing, you obviously became very interested in it, therefore wanting to progress became the whole point of it. having fun becomes pushing your boundaries, and if you learn anything in sports is that most of your decisions have to be made instantly in order to execute your actions. i could compare it to some of my friends who have multiple tattoos, they keep getting more, but they don't become more tolerant of the pain, they still bitch about it constantly during the process, or make scrunchy faces and etc.

it depends on what im doing. If im playing basketball i have a really high thresholds. I have played with wicked cuncusions or skiing is the same. If i have adreline pumping it dosent hurt. If there is no adreniline then i am a pussy.

kinda how that happened to me except it was a while ago so it was on an xc bike, no footer, on a 15ft. jump... well just the 2ft. kicker on flat ground after a steep hill. seat snapped off, snagged seat post.

Bikes seem like the worst thing to fall on, and a greatbway to up your chances of tearing your sack in half. Do you have a scar? I know a kid who tore his sack open by the tail of a skateboard. Also another kid whomtried to jump a fence and caught his sack and rippednthe fuck out of it

indeed.. took the worst fall ever longboarding and cracked my hip, had a concussion and had to bone contusions and I just popped right back up and tried to catch up with the group. That compared to some of the less serious hits when id stay down longer.. id say the harder the fall the faster i pop back up

Also, unrelated to anything, I told Julia Mancuso she had a nice ass without realizing it was her.

She turned around, and needless to say, my pain threshold went up 100x.

I Dropped my shoulder going for a tail grab on a three went cork and my face was the only thing the hit the knuckle before i flew to flat. Double Nose bleed and i partially dislocated my shoulder but i sat up and saw they had just opened up a run and it was pow so i got up and skied down with blood gushing from my face. It was quite fun.

Same for me, during high school, I broke 2 arms, got a concussion, almost lost an eye and got 2nd-3rd degree burn on my face. I'm glad none of them left scars.

When I broke my knee cap I knew I broke something instantly. It didn't hurt as bad as I thought it would though. But the night after my surgery where they put screws in my knee was the most intense pain I've ever felt in my life. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. I know for a fact that that experience has increased my pain threshold. I've hurt things since then that I used to thing was really painful and don't even bat an eye at it anymore.
