Once again, this thread is about the end of the movie, if you haven't seen it, don't scroll down till you do see it. If you haven't seen it, go into the movie and right at the beginning say to yourself "what is this entire movie was true/possible"

































Okay So now that that is out of the way. What did everyone think of the end of it...

My theory is that he is still stuck in limbo and will be forever. He spins his totem to see if it is reality but when he sees his kids he just doesn't care anymore. They are wearing the same clothes they were wearing in his memory when he tried to change it so that he could see their faces. Once he finally does change that memory and is able to see their faces he accepts that as his reality whether or not it is actually reality. Also i think the fact that the totem spun for ever but still wobbled meant that he was still somewhere in the middle of reality and dreamworld.

Then again as I typed this I thought of a few reasons why he had to be in reality... That movie was wild, its crazy to think about if all of that was true or possible. My mind got fucked 5 ways sideways from that movie.

If there were to be a sequel, it should have completely new cast/plotline and it should be called "Extraction." It's the only way it could work without ruining "Inception."

There will NOT be a sequel. Nolan achieved what he set out to do and there is no fucking need to follow up. Also, if any of you have seen any of his other films, his directing/writing style would never in a million years succumb to a dreamscape movie that's been done a million times. If you didn't understand it the first time, watch again and Inception is about as straightforward as it gets.

I completely agree - it's all in there. Some of us picked up almost everything the first time, while others may have missed key info. Just watch it again - it's not like a joke that gets ruined after someone explains it, I'm sure it just gets better.

But really, it was all a dream. A person's totem is useless unless it's only theirs and nobody has touched it, cobb's totem were the kids faces, there are a few references into how a totem doesn't have to be a physical object. You can only affect your own dreams as well, why was his subconscious creeping into fischer's dream? It wasn't his (fischer's) dream.

Has anyone dreamed about Inception? Its kinda fucked to think about. Your dreaming about people dreaming while in another dream. This movie is such a mind fuck.

Like in one of the earlier dreams where they are in the asian guys dream and cobb slides across the table to shoot his friend. There is just a dead body there until the dream is over.

did anyone else witness hte entire movie theatre gasping at the end when the little dradle things doesnt drop? I mean come on the plot was so fucking complex I lost interest half way through. was really not impressed with the movie at all.

best part was the guy going fakie on skis to shoot the guy. hollywood innovative.

just got back from it- phenomenal- havent seen a movie where my head was moving like that since the original matrix- the end was cool- but by far the dialogue with his wife in limbo hurt my head as I sat there trying to comprehend what was just said

i think that when you get out of limbo you go straight into reality, because when the old asian guy shot himself at the end he didn't go back to the snow dream where he died, he came back to reality on the plane.

throughout the movie when he was in dream stages, he had his wedding ring on.

when he was awake, no wedding ring.

end of the movie. no wedding ring.

How does leonardo dicaprio just travel through other peoples dream states? And how did he get to the same place as the old asian dude? Is he like the masiah of dreaming or something

On the other hand the no gravity fight in the hotel was super bad ass

ok, i haven't read the whole thread but can someone answer me this...
remember how Cobb and his wife grew old together in their subconscious? It literally shows them as old people holding hands and they're all wrinkly and whatnot.

How did they grow old like that, and then when they killed themselves on the train tracks, they were young again? One thing about the movie that has me confused.

Because they were in their own dream, and they grew old because they started to believe/forget that it was a dream as well as it is only natural to do that as time goes by. When he incepted the idea of the world not being real, she reverted back to normal as did he.

At least that's what I think. I'm gonna see it again tonight, let's see what new I'll pick up. :)

To add to what Mike-O said, in the higher levels of dreams time gets compounded...so for instance (and this is just an example) if 10 seconds go by in the real world, in a high level dream that same 10 seconds might be 10 years.  That's why they were able to live like 50+ years in the dream but not change in the real world when they woke up because only a few minutes probably passed.

alright, I checked Inception again and noticed some stuff I missed the first time:

-While first Cobb and Mal are shown committing suicide on the tracks as young versions, there are a few flashes in the final scenes which show they actually were the aged versions when they did it (I just missed this, nothing special)

-Maybe already mentioned in the thread: When Cobb tries Yusuf's sedative for the first time, he dreams of Mal and rushes to the bathroom all sweaty and tries to spin the dreidle. However, it falls to the ground and Saito interrupts him. Using the film's logic, this could also imply that the entire film onwards is just Cobb's dream, as he finally deletes Mal from his memories and is able to bear the "guilt" and change the dream about seeing his kids' faces! Argh. Probably not, but could be fun.

After seeing it again I don't know what to think. Because even if he managed to find Saito and bring him up to the next level, he still drowned on the first level when he didn't get out of the van after it plunged into the river. So I'm led to believe that he's still in limbo. On the other hand, the theory that the ring is actually his totem makes sense to me too, because it focused in on it in the beginning with Saito.

It doesn't matter if he drowned or not as he was already in limbo, the other guys waited for the dream state of the machine to wear off by hiding. At least that's what I thought. The ring theory doesn't seem to plausible to me, but I love this movie, it's a hallmark of combining a ridiculous amount of cinematic aspects. Think about it this way: as Cobb said, we all want catharsis and positive feelings empower negative ones; I think it applies to Inception as well!

The way I saw this was that Saito drowned in the first level dream and went to limbo before Cobb did.  Cobb drowned several seconds later (which compounded), meaning it was like 30-40 years in limbo.  That's why when Cobb wakes up on the shore of limbo and goes and sees Saito, Saito is like 80 years old and Cobb is still 30 something.  That's how I interpreted that part at least.
