That movie sucks....he's bitter about not winning the presidential race and then talks about his son getting hit by a car or something and then goes on about how he lost the presidential race again and then some more about his family...lame movie..

What it basicly says is that over the last 10 years Jay has had more snow then the 20 year average.

So the snow amounts are actully getting bigger, i found this pretty ironic. I do believe there is a climate change going on, but some scientists are blowing it out of porportion.

The only thin that annoys me with An Inconvenient Truth is when he brings up snow and ice melting in North America, stopping the "pump", causing an ice age in Europe, then asks a sharp rhetorical with "is there any other great body of ice melting near this pump?" and points to Greenland, saying that he'll get back to it...

He gets back to it, but not to the potential effects that he previously brought up... He mentions that it is melting extraordinarily rapidly, and so on and so forth, mentions how the water levels will rise worldwide, etc etc...

But what about the pump? His first argument is that the melting ice stopped the pump, causing an ice age overseas... Well, wouldn't it do that again, and sooner rather than later giving the warming?

Rowen, correct me if i'm wrong, i dunno what the status of the argument is, but aren't we having a sort of "microwave vs oven effect" on the world?
Al's graphs show a rise in temps, then our intervention with a huge rise. But wouldn't we simply be doing what nature takes a long time to do in a very short time? As in, nature would take a long time to melt Greenland ice, causing a new ice age and thus causing global cooling as ice reflects the sun light, and we are simply accelerating this process?

The movie makes huge conclusions without following what it had said in that part... I don't think we have any clue what will happen, we can assume it's bad, but seeing as we may be causing a new ice age, with a ton of pollution in the air, i don't think we can accurately predict what will happen next, only that it will happen faster than normal due to our influence...

Essentially, yes. What we're doing is accelerating natural global cycles, and in this we have a problem. Earth's cycles exist because they create feedback loops with each other. You see the same in the example of a small lake.

Small lake - has lots of creatures in it, from bacteria, to algae, to ducks, to fish, to otters. So, normally, these populations are stable, with a little fluctuation here and there. More algae means more smaller fish, which allows more larger fish, increasing the otters food supply and population. Now, algae will then start to decline as the predators increase, which will cause a ripple effect throughout the food chain, and populations will decrease. Cool. Natural cycles, right?

Now, a problem occurs when algae suddenly bloom. If the algae get nutrients and increase in population at a very high rate, they inundate the lake, and choke out any other life, creating anoxic conditions. Basically, by giving the cycle a sudden sharp shock, the natural 'checks and balances' in population control fail, and algae extinguish all other life, and eventually die themselves due to lack of nutrients.

Thats what scientists are frightened of. Never has our Earth seen such sudden and radical changes in its climate, and we could be setting ourselves up for a massive global disaster. The signs of this are already present and we're not going to feel the real effects for a few years, but by then, it might already be too late.

Well, maybe yes, maybe no. Normally, these changes happen over thousands of years, but sudden drastic changes can sort of  'break the cycle', as the balance is so violently upset that the system does not have time to respond and go back naturally. If too much CO2 is released all at once, we may have a 'runaway' situation, where the planet just heats up at such a rapid rate that the cooling effects from global dimming and such wont be able to counteract the heat being gained on the surface.

Global warming is really scary shit, just because we have no idea what the fuck we are doing with our planet, and the effects of our actions may not be visible for a long time. As I've said before, we're basically conducting the largest uncontrolled experiment on Earth, and if we fuck up, we dont get a second try.

i say we all keep arguing about this untill someone is claimed the winner. at that point in time, depending on wether he/she has determined that global warming is real or not, the winner will announce his/her master plan to reverse global warming, and since he/she is the winner of a ns arguement, the world will follow and all will be saved, thank god, and al gore, and sasquatch

That has pretty much no significance whatsoever on a global scale, except maybe to prove yourself wrong. Warmer air can hold more moisture, which leads to more precipitation, and more snowfall in the winter. What will probably happen is that snowfall will increase until the temperature goes below 32 degrees less and less frequently in the winter, so more snow, and then more rain, and then no snow at all, only rain.
