I want to see a judge give someone a 0 for doing a switch 10 because it's so fucking boring and unoriginal.

I can't believe someone who works for this site could make such a stupid thread. Mr. Bishop, People are throwing switch 10's so much because they are so difficult and it shows how well they can ski. If you people want to start seeing 360's once again in big air comps instead then we are going back in time rather than progressing the sport with bigger and better tricks, such as the switch 10. Unless you as an athlete are throwing the trick so much that you are getting bored of it then there is no reason you, Mr. Bishop and your little NS followers, should be bashing on seeing them to much.

Well...I suspected as much. They posted up pictures of the best trick contest. Pretty weak. They knocked Rory for his Switch Backs:

A switch double backflip only impresses people if the reason it's landed is becasue your DINs are blow-out-both-knees-cranked. Rory Bushfield, double ejecter.

I totally agree the SW 10 has been the "big air" trick for years now i saw everyone toss it down at WSI 2 years ago how is it still winning? what happened to all this progression that everyone bitches about

and why the heck is newschool skiing being commentated also by an aerialist(Trace Worthington er whatever)... no wonder they want to see more spins and less style.

I believe a man who works for this site is allowed to express his own personal opinions in a forum where other people can openly discuss/debate and share their own thoughts.

Look, we all know why people are throwing switch 10's. Because yes, it is a very technical trick and does award attention from judges. Yes, it proves that you have the technical skills to throw advanced tricks, but how much room then does it leave for creativity, originality, and style? How does it differ so much more from aerilists?

And yes, I would love to see some 360's thrown in a big air comp. And no, it does not mean that we are going back in time.

How about a 360 where someone completely stalls it out, arches his back, and holds a grab combo like no one has ever seen before? Or would that not be progression too?

newschoolskiing has lost lot of good stuff it had, back in the days...

I remember that in 2000 x-games where Candide won BigAir whit Corked9+Underflip everybody where doing different tricks, like Tanner throwed misty7, JF Cusson tryed somekind of rodeo9, Boyd Easley misty1080, Skogen Sprang Swichtrodeo7 japan air, Evan Raps throwed back full tailgrap, Vincent Dorion did styly900 whit mute and Philip Dion crashed two misty540s but what im trying to say that everybody were just discovering all new tricks and it was way more better than these days when i think that whole swicht 1080 should be banned.

And i also think that in BigAir comps should be atleast one round were is not alloud to spin more than 540. Were judges should only concentrate on style.

Now days BigAir/Best trick competition = swicht spin to win contest whit grap.

Yo... my dream for a big air contest would be as follows:

Invite like 30 athletes, or have qualifiers or something like that, but get it down to 20-30 people.

Then you run finals as a two-hour jam session.

You win for having the biggest bag of good tricks, and rotations are capped at 7. Like you spin 9 or more and you get zero.

That'd be sweet.

Nah, I'd say have it on a jump the size of the US Open and allow up to a 9. So if it was going to be steezey, they'll have to go huge.

Allow whatever. Do not put restrictions.

Putting restrictions on skiers is the worst way to progress. Skiers can do what they want. They just make bad decisions. They need to start making the right decisions. You cant force it on them or skiing just becomes too narrow. Everything has to be allowed.

People have been ranting in our sport about style for years. However this fact is simply ignored when it comes to big air. Look at snowboarding... they have room for style in their contests. David Benedict (sp?) and his backside 180 double shifty for the win... shit like that.

The problem that skiers are having is none of us can look past the degree of difficulty of the trick. Sure a sw 10 can be a stylie sw 10, but it would never be more stylie than a sw 3.

I'm not saying I want forwards 3's back in big air, but what about zero, 180, sw 3, sw 7, mistys, flatspins, peproll.... shit like that?

To simply say that the sw 10 is the only trick progressing our sport because it's high rotations is to admit that we think exactly like aerialests.

you know, if you think about it, little AM contests is like that. contests where few skiers have sponsors and stuff. those contests at you local mountain where everyone tries new tricks or work on something they know. and shit bishop, you have probably figuerd out the most briliant judging system ever!!!! the biggest bag of tricks!!!! then it would be possible to have a contest where the winner actually is the best skier

I disagree. I welcome the fakie 1080. I welcome the fakie 1440 even more (Schiller's US Open big air trick was one of the -- if not THE -- sickest things ever pulled on skis).

To say a fakie 10 would never be more stylie than a fakie 3 is a purely subjective comment that does not change a thing in this debate. The fact is that fakie 10s are more difficult than fakie 3s. How on earth do you expect a judge to give a fakie 3 a gold medal over a fakie 10 (assuming all other things equal, like style and landing)?? It's just not going to happen. It shouldn't happen.

The biggest problem with events is fair judging. To blow the doors open and leave it an entirely subjective process like letting judges say, by definition, fakie 3s are more "stylish" than fakie 10s, hurts the sport immeasurably and brings us 10 steps backwards in terms of progression. Athletes need certainty when competing. They need to have at least some idea what it takes to win. Relying on Josh Loubek's personal opinion as to what is stylish is NOT the way to judge a comp.

Obviously the fakie 10 is not the only trick progressing our sport. It just happened to be that it was the trick most athletes felt comfortable with yesterday. Sure it may have been "boring" to some spectators to see a jump more than once, but you can't fault the athletes for using it, because there's a lot of money on the line, not to mention the prestige and sponsrship fallout that an X-Games medal brings.

Also, I don't think anyone on this forum thinks like an aerialist -- that's a big stretch. Bishop, go for the jam format you propose, it may work for an event you run. I just don't think it makes sense for major events for a variety of logistical reasons.

Sure a 1080 could be more stylish than a switch 3. But that doesn't mean a switch 3 can't be better than a switch 10.

The problem is we aren't even opening the door for sick small spins to win.

Difficulty should matter alot less than style if you ask me.

Originality and style are the two main factors in a competition. Or should be. And then difficulty should count a little little bit.

And dont tell me you can't be original in a big air. You can.

sw 10's is in all comps!!! alot of skiers i know always work towards the sw 10 in everycomp! its the comp trick! and it should be a movie trick!!!

i dont think it is right now the majority of the riders in a comp all throw down switch 10s...lets see something new...we were all impressed whn we say a switch 10 last year in slopestyle...KEEP IT FRESH

I agree that my position is a purely subjective matter, but really when you boil it all down our sport is SUPPOSED to be subjective. That is the artistic flair we all desire.

I will NEVER agree that a sw 10 could be more stylish than a sw 3. Sure if it was a shitty sw 3... but if someone did the dopest sw 3 shifty you've ever seen. Perfect in every aspect, not even flailing their eyeballs, and basically overshot the jump. I'm not talking about any old sw 3... i'm talking about THE switch 3... the switch 3 that defines everything perfect about a sw 3...

The 10 will always be a faster spin, which in my mind means less style. Yes a sw 10 can by stylie too, but not as stylie as the sw 3 to end all sw 3's.

I also agree that the judges right now probably aren't good enough to make the call.

It's not the athlete's fault, it is the judges for not being able to appreciate the artistic beauty and style of a lower rotation.

I just want the lower rotation to have a chance.

Right now though, if someone did the sw 3 I'm talking about, and someone else did cab 10 blunt halfway down the landing, they'd still with.

THAT is the problem.

I think that would be one of the key aspects to a lower rotation being sick... going big. However big the jump is for the low rotation to have a chance they would have to go absolutely retardedly massive.

i would really like to see some mountain support NS by hosting a NS comp, where doug, chris, paul, and a few others of their chosing are the judges, and doug could even give someone a 0 if they did a sw 10. I would seriously pitch this idea to the mountains around NS headquarters because i think there is enough of a demand for a good ski comp, and that you have enough evidence here to show them that you know what the skiiers want.

over shooting is utterly sick. if you take a small jump and over sdhoot it to make a toal of 30 feet thtasi 50 times iscker then a 30 footer. agreed now blwothta up to mass proportions like tj's overshooting. yes its sick . now throw a way sicker trick instead of a sw 1440 like a huuge slow cork 5 somehting sick i dunno sifty , nose grab , illness . it owudl BLOW YOUR MIND away. like thats hwta skiing is , not a switch 1440

We'd love to do this... and yes eventually it will happen.

The hardest part about throwing a contest is money! You need prize money, and to pay for insurance... which requires some serious capital.

It's in the eventual plans, but we've got to grow a bit more to get it going!
