Reading guitar tabs

can anyone give me a few pointers on what to do?

each line represents a string on the guitar. the number on the line represents which fret you press on that string. usually the tab will give you instructions on what other symbols mean, like P = pulloff and H = hammeron and so on.

^no. its convienient, so in the long run, whoever uses tabs is the winner. stop trying to be a badass by only using sheet music and that shit. tabs won't ruin you. ever.

my friend who has been playing guitar for 8 years sais that he learned by reading tabs and playing his favorite songs; he is probably one of the best guitarists i've ever heard.

He plays songs. There's a difference between being a good guitarist and being good at playing other people's songs.

Then he didn't rely on the tabs. It's great when somebody can go beyond tabs and start learning the theory and do their own thing.

Grab a book about theory. Knowing about what your playing will make you SUCH a better musician. There's also books on Jazz guitar, fingerpicking blues guitar, rock guitar, whatever you want. That'll show you different rhythms and such thatll help too.

How long have you been playing drums? When I hit 4/5 years, I got sick of it and wanted to quit but I didnt. Now I'm at 12/13 years and Im SOOO glad I stuck to it. BUT, Definitly pick up guitar too, but ALONG with drums. It'll make you such a better musician.

^im going on my 5th year exactly in a few months..i just see guitarists and wanna be like them...i feel that there is more to guitar than drums

Do yourself a favor and DONT quit. I thought the exact same thing and picked up guitar. Trust me, there is soooo much more to drumming than you've been able to learn so far. I was taught in Jazz and rock up to then, and since then I've been in rock bands, ska bands, weird bands, Piano rock bands, and I've found it real easy to throw in some reggae, or some latin beats or jazz fills into any of those, and it feels soo cool. my sn is karchee3 if you wana talk about it more.

i use tabs if i'm stuck on a particular song, but its funner messing around in your room trying to find a good rythem.

tabs are good for getting started, but you shouldnt rely to much on them. Learn scales and know what note/chord you are playing. Then try to figure out songs just by hearing it.
