WSSF returns to Whistler for 2024! The World Ski & Snowboard Festival is a legendary event in any skier’s calendar. The festival has played host to many of the Newschoolers staff over the years and if you were to ask them about it, you’d probably get a somewhat hazy recollection of the amazing week. Incredible spring skiing with the crew, especially laps of the infamous Black Park, come to mind. And perhaps more importantly, although less easily recalled, some epic après.

One of the highlights of the action-packed WSSF calendar is the Intersection video contest. Entrants are given 12 days to film a 4 - 6 minute project within 100km of the resort, which includes in-bounds footage as well as backcountry and some quite hilarious B-roll/storylines. Winners of Intersection have included skiing legends such as Poor Boyz, Level 1, Burrlapz, and Voleurz featuring KC Deane.

The inaugural WSSF Intersection competition was in 2011 and was won by the Voleurz crew in ‘Cat Skiing’. Their legendary entry has loads of old-school style, urban features, and backcountry lines as well as some all-important Black Park laps. Years later the Intersection video contest is still going strong!

Last year’s iteration saw some incredible productions. The winner, ‘Out Of Service’ - although it is a snowboard/sled film - is notable for the hilarious South Park parody that intertwines the riding and sledding. So we’re going to put aside our snow sports allegiances for 6.5 minutes to enjoy this one, remember kids, you could learn a lot from snowboarding next time you’re thinking about picking up a camera.

Honestly, we could have watched a full-length South Park parody episode from these guys sans snowsports coz this was hilarious. Bonus points for the Team America song ‘Montage’ to keep in line with the Trey Parker & Matt Stone theme.

The people’s choice award went to Dead Barbies’ Nightmare On Emerald Drive, okay, this one is more “NS” as it features skiing from the likes of Meg Cummings, Rachel Anderson, Cat Agnew, Zoe Blewett, and Zak Mousseau (as the killer). It showcased some of the best female skiers in the Sea To Sky area and had some classic shots of Zak shredding pow and park on the legendary K2 Hellbent.

If you want to get a better sense of what the Intersection screening and awards show will look like take a look at the recap video from the year the Burrlapz crew (Dylan Siggers et al) took home the W.

The WSSF week at Whistler Blackcomb also plays host to one of the craziest races in skiing; a slalom race down the infamous Saudan Couloir Race Extreme Presented by Helly Hansen, one of the steepest runs at the resort. The face gets pisted and gates are set up. Testing riders' quads to the max, this is one you have to see to believe.

That’s not all that is on offer between the 8th and 14th of April in Whistler for WSSF, there’s legendary après around town, live music in the Village, and some of the best spring riding in the world - you never know, you might even get a spring dump of pow followed by blue skies, stranger things have happened.
