US Grand Prix Championships - Halfpipe Qualifiers

Words & Photos: Ilanna Barkusky

Pipe qualifiers at the US Grand Prix Championships went off today in Park City, Utah. As the saying goes, 'ladies first', and so they did, laying down their runs before two heats of male qualifiers went down. The day began with sunny skies and light wind, which was highlighted by stomped runs, impressive amplitude and progressive tricks from the ladies. Coming out on top was Maddie Bowman, followed by Ayana Onozuka and Sabrina Cakmakli who will be joined by three others to do battle on Saturday for finals.

Next up was heat 1 of the guys, with the wind making an appearance and making conditions a little bit breezy. This didn't hinder anyone from going absolutely massive, and I think we can all agree that pipe skiing is progressing to an insane level where it is so fun to watch right now! The top four from each heat advanced, with two extra spots being handed out based on their overall score. Unfortunately, the wind did pick up substantially in heat two which led to a few skiers who opted not to take a second run. Healing vibes going out to Marco Ladner and Jon Anders Lindstad who suffered some painful looking crashes. Best wishes for a healthy recovery!
