Powder Photo Annual ? Sammy Carlson

by whistlerdan
Dec 25th 2010 - 2 comments

Getting photos in a Photo Annual is always an honor, especially Powder Magazine in N.America.  This photo of Sammy Carlson was taken in Niseko, Japan.  We had been busting our asses shooting photos for days and we decided one night just to go and have a shred at one of the night ski resorts. We [...]

This photo of Mike Henitiuk was just featured in the Downdays Photo Annual , a European wide ski magazine that collects together the best ski photos of the year.  This shot was taken on my trip to Edmonton in 2010 with Poorboyz productions.  You can see the full article about the trip HERE.  It was [...]

Sammy Carlson ? Salomon advert

Dec 24th 2010 - 0 comments

These two photos of Sammy were shot on the side of a back road near the Japanese city of Sapporo.  We drove a lot of the roads in the area looking for interesting features and these avalanche barriers are everywhere.  There was so much snow though that many of them were filled in and didn’t [...]

Alaska shooting with PBP

by whistlerdan
Apr 2nd 2010 - 2 comments

I’m becoming very very familiar with the interior of the hotel room in
which I’m currently sitting.  The front door is a portal to the 1970s,
wood paneled walls that creak in the night, vinyl flooring and a
selection of electrical appliances that would make an interesting museum
exhibit.  They call it the “slow roast” here in Haines, Alaska, and
nobody knows how long it will last.  When I first arrived in town 2
weeks ago the skies were blue for a couple of days and we got right into
it.  But since then our fortune has changed.  We have flown for 1 run
in the last 7 days….. and its beginning to drive us insane.  The weather
patterns seem totally unpredictable, even by the most seasoned of
Alaskan forecasters.  We have given up even checking on them, the only
way to go is to look out of the window.

portfolio update

by whistlerdan
Mar 17th 2010 - 1 comments

I decided that it was time to update some portfolio sections on my
website.  At the end of each winter I have a stack of images that I
would just love to show everybody.  Unfortunately they have to remain
under wraps until they have been used by either the commercial or
editorial clients in the following winter’s ski magazine!  It means that
some photos can lay dormant on my hard drive for over 12 months before
they are seen by people other than art directors, marketing managers and
photo editors.  At this time though, nearly everything that I shot last
winter that is going to be published in one way or another has been so I
can finally update my site with some fresh images........

Camera choices... thoughts from an overcrowded camera bag

by whistlerdan
Feb 6th 2010 - 11 comments

I’m in the lucky position right now to have all three of Canons latest
cameras sitting here in front of me. I have been using the 5dMKII since January last year , I purchased a 7d in August and just over two weeks ago I picked up the new Canon 1dMKIV.
Whilst I’m not going to do exhaustive comparative testing between all
the cameras (I simply don’t have the time to do this and plenty of
websites out there will do this anyway) I thought I should collect
together some of the thoughts I have had whilst using these cameras.
These 3 cameras cover a broad spectrum in pricing so they are likely to
appeal to both professional and amateur photographers.  Which camera
would I chose for a particular task?  Read on to find out.

If you are looking to become a ski or snowboard photographer then get
ready for a long shopping list of gear you are going to need.  Every
time I pack my gear for a trip I’m amazed at the amount of gear I have
amassed over the last few years.  Some of it is fairly specialized and
only necessary for people that shoot full time for a living, and some
of it I would recommend for everyone looking to get into the business.
In no particular order here is my top ten list of things you will need
to get started!

Shooting video with the Canon 5dMKII - Part 3

by whistlerdan
Oct 3rd 2009 - 7 comments

When I decided I needed to get this video stuff dialed, I needed something to shoot.  There’s no point trying to figure this all out unless you have a purpose and some footage to play with.  Leigh Powis, a local skier from Whistler, told about his crazy plan to put a trampoline on top of [...]

Shooting Video with the Canon 5dMKII - Part 2

So once you have all of your video in a format that you can work with, import it all into Final Cut and set up a new project.  This is where you need to tread carefully, depending on which version of FCP you have.  I have Final Cut 5 and that caused some problems to [...]

Shooting video with a Canon 5dMKII - Part 1

Oct 1st 2009 - 1 comments

When I first got the 5dMKII last winter, the camera world was buzzing about the incredible HD video that it can shoot as well as the beautiful 21MP images.  This will be great I thought, I can shoot some videos in between shooting photos.  When it actually came down to it though, nice idea as [...]

Whistler Blackcomb Peak to Peak campaign

Sep 8th 2009 - 2 comments

Back in the spring time I was asked to shoot a campaign for Whistler Blackcomb.  The ads were to center around the new Peak to Peak gondola that spans the gap between Whistler and Blackcomb and the first versions have now hit the news stands in Freeskier magazine and Transworld Snowboarding.  We had some difficulties [...]
