Best mpg rig with awd

I’m in need of a rig for the winter, I’ve narrowed it down to either a Astro or truck with a bed camper. Astro has everything I want space and mileage wise but I lowkey don’t want to loose my legs if I get into a front end crash. Truck with camper would be sick but I’d expect the mileage to be dogass. So my current options are don’t crash and get decent mileage or spend like a million dollars in gas to go anywhere. If anyone knows of a magical third option pls lmk.

Also considering Toyota Sienna but I don’t know if it would be big enough

Get an armor-plated military grade H1 Hummer with a bazooka mounted to the hood. Should put your concerns as ease. Family of 5 starts merging into your lane and you blast them away before they even touch you.

Or get an Altima. Same thing but much more affordable.

probably a land rover discovery ii with a 4.6 liter v8, lift and 33s. You’ll get probably 7-9 mpg and will need a quart of oil every 1,000 miles but it will be fun!

Awd minivan is gonna be your best bet or some sort of crossover suv if you want milage and abf you're shot enough to sleep in it

I mean if all you care about is milage then it's 100% the AWD Prius. If you want space it's gotta be 1 of the billion small hybrid SUVs in the mid to high 30s. I think just about every company has at least one. Honda crv, rav 4 and Hyundai Tucson are all just under 40mpg

Minivan is the move I think. I have a setup in my outback rn which works, but crawling out of my bed into the drivers seat gets less chill every time I do it. Gets damn good mpg tho. Probably just gonna cop a Sienna so I can have a roomish deal in the back and still get reasonable mileage

Hybrids are sweet, I drive a hyundai Tucson non hybrid and that thing gets me up and down little cottonwood in up to about a foot and a half of snow with the right snow tires on it. Great AWD system. Gas mileage on the non hybrid is meh though, maybe 17 in the city, and then 28 on the highway if I'm lucky

ex had a Rav4 Prime and it was super sick. Total agree with the small hybrid suv

I mean that's a weird reason to not want it. Just dont get in a head on collision. Regardless of legs they tend to be pretty deadly.

Ive had a bunch of friends with old asto vans. I've seen them broken down many times. They can be kind of a pain to work on too. Thats more a reason than the leg thing lol.

But they are decently roomy and you can get them pretty cheap.

Truck is also a good option. Sucks a cheap good truck is more elusive these days but they can be found.

I guess really just depends what you want

Astro actually gets pretty terrible mileage. Interwebs are saying like 15mpg combined mileage. That's gonna be even worse in the mountains. A small truck with a camper will be similar to the Astro and maybe even better MPG. Anything newer will probably be more efficient but trucks and vans have gotten bigger so you might still be looking at the same sort of MPG. Hybrids will do better and a new hybrid is going to be the best MPG for sure. I rented an AWD camry and got close to 50 mpg driving back and forth over the Sierras

Rav4 prime is a great car but hard to get in most states. Toyota sends almost all of them to states with wacky emissions rules to offset their 4runners and tundras.

Chevy Astro is a piece of shit and only gets like 15mpg

If you want a truck best value rn is an old tundra with the 5.7 V8 and frame recall done. Tundra is a PIG on gas though

If you want fuel economy pick a 4 banger Japanese crossover/minivan w AWD

Make sure you budget in a set of snow tires too

ngl a pilot or mdx could be the move….ive got a pilot and parents have MDX’s. My pilot gets avg 21mpg with awd. It’s got a E-Locker (just uses traction control to send force to the rear wheels). It also has a manual 1st 2nd 3rd gear select. The third has basically been my snow mode when there is more than a foot of snow on the road. More than enough space to sleep in, roof rails and cross bar, power lift gate, sunroof, bluetooth etc. Could be the move. I’ve put 32k miles on it in the past year 1/2 and the only thing it’s needed was oil changes, and an alternator. Has had zero issues at all besides the alternator, but that was at 168k miles and now im at 193k. Just look out for rust, make sure the timing belt has been done as well. You should be all good. 21mpg avg isn’t great but it isn’t terrible especially for a big awd suv with a 5spd. U can usually find them between 8-14 grand

Just traded in my '14 outback 23mpg for a '22 outback and currently getting 28mpg. Plenty of room to sleep with the back seat down

Tundra with a cap or better, a camper is a great move. Mileage won’t be great, but just go the speed limit to save fuel and with routine maintenance the truck will last forever. A minivan could be a good move too.

My silverado with the 3.0 duramax gets ~26mpg on the highway without a trailer or big load.

The rav 4 hybrid is solid.

Also waiting on the forester hybrid. I see stuff for it online but when I went to the dealership 3 months ago they looked at me like I had 2 heads so I guess I can’t recommend that just yet 😂

I have a rav4, it surprisingly has a few more inches of space in the back compared to my old 09 forester, and better head height. I can vertically stand my bike in the back with the front wheel off. I will say that the awd on the forester was better, but the best awd vehicle I've ever owned was a Suzuki sx4. Plowed through 2 feet of cement in that thing.

Ignoring all of that and given the fact that you are considering a truck with a camper (are you rich or some shit?), you should just buy the new awd vw ID buzz. It's roomy, it's electric, and you can have mad cult orgies or hot box sessions in the back, just don't forget your sitar, harmonica, or tambourine. But in all seriousness, a dude with a vw bus comes off as way cooler than anyone with one of those ugly ass military looking camper vans, and if your hill has charging stations your can park that fucker right at the front.

3 liter duramax is built for fuel efficiency not power. Diesels are very efficient.

I love talking to dealers that have zero knowledge of present or future products from their company! It's such a useless system these days. I'm thinking about setting up a lease on a new work truck and am not looking forward to the experience.

Yeah that new truck would be nice, but I have a dope 2022 Kia sportage on the lot right now. It would be cheaper biweekly (but higher interest) and has a better fuel economy.
