finance bros, how do we like DAOs? my buddy started one around NFTs and founded some other companies and did very well. just took a year off work to travel the works and came back and bought a $2.5m house of a park in denver.

so ive been on a kick the last couple days exploring DAOs and just for fun messing around with the idea of PowDAO which would be a tiered DAO for a ski resort. you would buy different levels of ownership.
-daily which is ownership that grants lift access and maybe petty small daily voting power for an activity.
-annual ownership which grants you ownership to all the daily ownership access for a year as well as voting power for things like service/experiences (seasonal food offerings and price, incentives for parking/carpooling, small upgrades >$10k)
-multi year ownership with all the daily and yearly ownership perks plus short term investment voting power (1-3 year capital projects up to $250k, daily and annual ownership pricing, employee minimum wages, resort goals and initiatives, etc)
-lifetime ownership which has all
levels of ownership plus voting power for major investments (anything $250k+, master development plans, hiring of senior staff members, etc)

this model is really a hybrid but would give a lot more power to pass holders to influence their experience and have a say in the direction a company is going and be listened to. would also offer transparency to all about the financials and operating burdens of the company.

my thoughts were that there would be an initial offering and a goal to purchase eldora because of its proximity to the tech bros/investors of boulder and denver, smaller size, shorter operating season and affordable purchase price compared to any larger resorts. would be a strong pilot program. if there was funds weren’t raised to purchase eldora, then there would be a vote to refund all the money or look into other options.

whatchu think? does this sound like a better experience for you as a skier? what do you like? poke holes in it. its just a day dream on NS right now lol

Would the resort be open to the public selling day passes etc? I’m thinking decentralized ownership like this would cause problems getting insured because I don’t think they are recognized as legal entities. Maybe in that case it would have to be like a private club for the people who are bought in.

I’ve only heard of DAO’s that deal exclusively with digital assets. Is there a legal structure for a DAO to buy land or an existing business eg an operating skill resort?

also i don’t really know what you mean by discord/course phase lol

i did do some research on it a bit after and the hardest parts will be the ownership of the resort and creating value for the high dollar tiers as current laws wouldn’t allow for them to receive payment from profits. so a separate corp would need to be made to be the legal entity for operating while in a governance agreement with powDAO. then depending on the tier, token holders would be appointed to the board of the legal entity at which point they would get no salary and get bonuses based on the resorts performance. this drives up the value of buying those tokens while remaining legal but would need a lawyer to confirm that lmao

anyway, i think you’re best suited for the daily tier when you come to visit as it wouldn’t make much sense for you not being near the mountain itself.

so big green is a nonprofit dao that supports other nonprofits through grants which is hiring and i applied at lol. so it got my brain thinking how a dao could be used for skiing and this was the brainstorm of that.

a separate legal entity would have to own the resort and enter a governance agreement with PowDAO that would dictate the operations so definitely a bit of a complexity. the legal entity would buy insurance etc. similar to how ski resorts do.

something else i thought of is would it make more sense to enter into a co-op like REI rather than a DAO and offer a similar tier model? the dao is more exciting to me but there’s some overlap and perhaps less barriers in the co-op

Is this DAO think actually useful or is it something hyped by tech bros? On paper it could work but I don't think it would actually work. Sounds bit problematic if everyone can and has to vote for decisions.

I didn’t think about a co-op. Now that you bring that up, I don’t see what benefit a DAO would have over a co-op if you still need a separate corporate structure to operate. Mad River Glen is a co-op. A share gets you a privileged season pass and voting rights I think, which I think is basically what you’re describing.

so i think this PowDAO is almost a bridge between a co-op and dao tech. shooting for the benefits of the co-op being community and member focused with the dao transparency and automation. i think a big part of it would be to also serve as an introduction to many people the utilization of a web3 enterprise. i think having each day ticket attached to an NFT would be an exciting differentiate from other resorts and could be used to drive reward programs in a unique way. there could also be some seasonal or periodic NFTs sold solely as collectibles but idk if that’s a route i am striving for off the bat. also, DAOs are new and shiny and have a farther reach than co-ops so i think it could be marketed better to higher dollar investors.

as far as legality, seems to be the biggest hurdle and long term unknown. current thought is creating a legal entity pow.ski that operates the resort under the sole governance of powDAO. legally, there needs to be a board of directors and those would be the lifetime donors who receive a small salary and bonuses based on performance of the resort.

one thing to call out is that daily users will primarily interact with our current web2 interfaces to eliminate and access barriers and their petty daily experience votes will be basic off chain votes that somewhat mimic and introduce what the more involved voting would be like in a hopefully fun and engaging way. they would have the option to throw their nft in a wallet if they choose but it would basically be a scam able QR code unique to their order similar to a confirmation code or concert ticket when you order something online.

imma make a presentation and pitch it to my nounder friend and see what he thinks lol. he’ll have good feedback for sure

well all funds to start would be in escrow and if funding targets weren’t met, the money goes back. once acquired, selling daily NFTs and annual NFTs is the same as selling day tickets and season passes at resorts.

so your question is basically why this over the status quo. if you’re fine with rob katz making the decisions to appease the stock holders which are financial institutions such as wells fargo, chase, etc. then by all means, buy an epic pass or support one of their resorts. but if you think that the user experience has gone down due to efforts to grow the stock value or appease a small group of investors rather than to prioritize the guest experience than come have a voice with PowDAO. where you get to have a say in what you are making a pretty significant investment on: your season passes.

that being said, quick decision making could be a barrier for somethings do to the need to set up a vote and execute it. most quick decisions will be operational and the legal entity pow.ski would handle that. oh and not 100% on how the employee population would fit into the equation as far as voting power goes.

would be sick to scale it to a multiple resorts to expand the reach but for now, your gonna wanna primarily live in the front range of colorado lol.

also, wtf dude?! my daydreams are not about get rich quick schemes or scamming people lmao. i have another thread where i sarcastically pitch a similar idea where we eliminate the us president by electing me (paBS 2028) and replace decision making with large scale voting be the citizens rather than just a few in power, in congress, or the president. this idea is similar in the aspect that i believe in large scale things being good for the people but do not believe in isolated power to a few. rather i put my trust in the people and this aligns with my other ideologies. take it back that you think i’m some moral less scam artist otherwise im telling eheath!
