Rules on music

When it comes to music for edits/movies I know that everyone wants to stray from using the same song as others, but I’ve always wondered what you guys thought about using a song for a ski edit that’s already been used in snowboarding/ skateboarding
I feel if that is against the unsaid rules then it would be so hard to keep up with who used what song when it’s sometimes hard enough with just skiing.

I just wouldn’t use a song that ppl widely associate with a legendary video, or from something that just recently made waves in the community.

There's so much music out there, it's not that hard to find something that hasn't been used. Just do some exploring.
Do whatever you want though, nothing is going to happen if you don't follow the edit rules.

My thing is I know Bode Merrill has a pretty legendary part in the movie twe12ve and his song is classical by Gucci mane, my thing is I wouldn’t use that song because I don’t think any footy I get could do it justice, but I want to see a super sick edit from somebody in skiing to that song

No chance I’m gonna keep up with everything that gets put out, but do bigger films follow those rules because I think some songs used in snowboarding or skating would be so nice

All the “rules” are really just result of people respecting their own craft. When you work so hard to create a project following the rules is really voluntary. Also comes with experience and wanting to improve.

From my perspective, if you are already at the point where you can break one of these rules and someone gives a shit then you are also probably at a point where you’d rather go the extra 10% to make the rest of your work worth it. If you don’t care yet then it doesn’t matter and that’s fine too.

my favorite videos always lean more artistic than athletic and I think the effort to be unique/original adds to the artistry.

henrik drops edits on rappers youtube channels and inspired had the whole sound track for ‘be inspired’ produced for the film. so that basically the standard you should be striving for 🤣

I don't think there's strict rules since different people are gonna have different opinions. Here's my 2 cents tho:

Any song used in a really well known skate video is probably gonna be off limits. Especially strobeck, since not only have a lot of people watched his videos but his style has been pretty influential on a lot of filmers. Even though skating's a different activity, a lot of people are gonna inevitably be comparing the two videos which isn't ideal.

The counterpoint is that there's a shit ton of skate videos. If you make enough ski videos it's inevitable that you're gonna use a song that's been used in a skate video sooner or later. It's happened to me.

To me it's basically about due diligence. As an editor you should either be familiar with a decent amount of influential/popular skate and snowboard videos or run your song choices by someone who is.

if you’re releasing a serious edit or cut it’s important not to song jack, but at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter. use whatever songs you want, just know some work better than others objectively.

@coochieman7 lol,I think it's fair to shout out your sources/insp. As with anything in life, if it works, it works. If it doesn't, the underlying content should still shine through and some people will prob still enjoy it. :D

with a name like Coochieman, you should prob use YN Jay XD

I think they try to avoid it. I think someone who's a well known filmer or getting paid to film isn't gonna jack a song from a well known video although it definitely does happen, probably by accident. Like I don't think people are religiously watching all snowboard and skate videos but people are def trying to avoid using songs from the bigger ones ex. the vans videos, strobeck, baker, any of the torment mag videos etc

It’s allright, but try to stay away from the big skate and snowboard movies. Being a bit of a skate video nerd and snob it can rub me the wrong way if you use a song from a pretty famous video. Imo good video creator watches a lot of videos from other action sports without copying the style completely and keeping it original and creating their own style.
