Why is NS full of skiers?

I understand that for many of us skiing was our first introduction to the world skiing on a grand scale. So we all came here as skiers looking to ski more. But the essence of skiing has fell from NS's members. Too many members here go skiing. Too many members fill their days with skiing but forget to post so everyone knows they ski. How am I gonna know you ski if you’re not a loud douche about it?

So I ask, don't you care to back up all of your skiing with the insecurities of your ego?

TLDR: if you can’t triple you can’t ski. also loveland is big mountain.

wym u mean skiing sucks? Sure there's lots of aspects of it that suck but there's so many good skiers out there now and so many dope videos dropping every year. And I think there's a lot of people who speak their mind. Have you ever looked through the Unpopular opinions thread, plenty of good examples in there

all of these old tape cameras like vx1000 or whatever look like absolute shit for park clips. They look good for street skiing but when you are filming park you are mostly filming snow and they do a terrible job of capturing and contrast and texture of the snow surface. Don’t tell me overexposed fisheye is just somebody’s style, it looks fucking terrible.

also, the worst thing about this website is crusty ass washed millennials who piss and moan constantly bout how skiing was soooo much cooler in 2012, I was around then too and I think the scene is better now. You’re turning into a boomer and don’t even realize it, it’s embarrassing

Most mtns had a decent size park at one point. Most have scaled back, some have abandoned them. Full length movies every year. Both contests and the progression still feeling fresh at the time.

Again not hating on skiing now, but I feel its hard to make that argument that it's better now. Skiing is finw now it's great. There are still parks, there are still people to shred with. The summer camps are still going. Beartooth is opening again.

But yeah, what specifically is so.much better now that's worth a salty hot take?

The skiing is better now. The gear is better now.

The mountains are worse. The culture of skiing has peaked and waned.

Not just that of freeskiing, but all disciplines. Every aspect of every recreational pursuit has been commodified by some venture capital fuck.

Still sick stuff happening everyday in the sport though.

I think culture wise like 2000-07 was a cool time for "action sports" in general. It peaked in the general normy culture then too. Lots of video games, every brand was investing huge into the sports. People were getting paid $$$ in contracts and contest wins.

More contests and the progression season to season was easier too follow.

The dew tour actually being a tour and being a major thing.

ObviouslI was younger then so it def has an impact but if I'm just looking at those things its hard to see an argument for the opposite.

Again only mentioning it because of that other comment. Otherwise, the past is cool, old movies are cool, but get out and ski now.

I've watched a lot of park programs die but there's places coming back or springing up.

King Vail in tahoe is pretty sick. Mission ridge in WA if you want to hot lap medium large rails and get sick. Sugarbush is really making a push right now. Mammoth still invests heavily in the park. Copper as well.

Free places like Ruby Hill and that spot in Frisco.

The continued growth of woodwards and more integration with skiing and snowboarding.

So yeah, now is sick. Before was fine too imo

Also non skiing specifically, but the current explosion of concrete skateparks is amazing to see.

I lived in the rural hills. Nearest park was 1.5 hours away. And thats all janky prefab or wood ramps.

So that's def a big win for now ant the future. Also makes road trips way more fun hitting everything from the sickest parks to some random small concrete park on the side of the road.

I know I mentioned beartooth before but if anyone hasn't been and wants a good vibe/culture and some sick turns do that shit. Free dispersed camping, red lodge is right there(new skatepark but kinda a weird evergreen one). Car laps on some chutes. Yellowstone.

Skiing is fine for sure

No ego here. Just a dude who likes to ski that has a mindset of a 15-year-old but with a body of a 50-year-old. When I hit a jump or pick a good mogul line, I imagine myself sending it, looking like a pro but in reality, I look like a complete booger eating, snow plowing, out of balance beginner. Besides, nobody wants to see an edit of that,lol.

I think we should all take break from skiing and focus on getting punched in the head repeatedly, this would improve the skiing skiers ability to ski while skiing and engage in better discussion. We gotta get the skiing skiers skiing again and posting skiing clips of skiing. Skiing is only skiing because of the skiing skiers, but if we can’t damage our brains enough we will never ski again.

I think that parks are better now, even though there are less of them. There is much better knowledge about how to build and maintain features. Lots of parks in 2012 and earlier were scary as fuck with gigantic sketchy features. Sometimes I think we have swung too far the other way and everything is a mellow fat tube now, but I think overall parks are way more fun. Using sugarloaf as an example, in 2012 there was always a humongous jump line and probably a superpipe too. Even though that was rad af for a select few skiers, the more mellow, playful type of park they build now is way more fun for everybody.

The ski scene is much more focused on street now than in the past. Full street videos are the norm and not the exception. There are multiple that are released every season. Most park skiers seem to take inspiration from street skiing rather than comp skiers. I pulled up to a small mom n pop hill this season and no joke like half of the kids were riding jetskis. Part of that is because comp skiing has become so wack, which is unfortunate. But I’m stoked that street skiing has become much more prominent in the scene. And that’s where the progression is too - go watch some Lauri kivari or bmack clips and tell me people were skiing like that 15 years or even 5 years ago.

Finally, the whole tall t era was actually incredibly bland and homogenous style wise. Everybody was just trying to ski and dress the same. I think there is a lot more variety now, and it comes without this cringe fake as fuck gangsta act. I’ll take the big pants long poles emo music stuff any day over the skittles tall t with a totally EPIC biggie mashup.

the death of physical media like magazines and dvds has caused the industry to suffer in some ways no question. That is something we need to fix. But what little physical media that exists now (bowser, hard pack) is leaps and bounds more artistic and fresh than whatever freeskier or powder was dropping in 2012.

Hmm I kinda like this take: There is less now, but it's better.

I don't want to piss anyone off, but the tall t era for me was pretty weird in some ways. I grew up in some not nice places and during that era I lived in a place where legitimately almost all of the kids I knew died from drugs or violence or ended up in the prison system.

It was always SUPER weird to sit in the car for a couple hours, get to the mountain, and see people dressing and talking like gangsters when they lived in nice ass upstate NY neighborhoods.

It was very funny on here when someone tried to bigtime me about how hard they were when I’m from one of the biggest projects in the Northeast and have friends and family with bodies on them and have lost a half dozen friends from childhood to fent. It was also super weird seeing the Tall-T uniform persisting into the 2010s on the hills when people living in my hood were onto skinny jeans and whatnot by 2009. I still love skiing from that era, I just view it sort of like pro-wrestling where the personas are all fake and the stunts are real

I think people were a bit too butt hurt with the last one. I personally think you were a bit too harsh on Ash and Exciety threshhold lol but it was refreshing to hear some honest thoughts that weren't all positive. I think an episode where viewers can call in would be fun

20/20 vision mi amigo. Def got some more community based stuff in mind. Also I stand by my takes, they’re opinions not facts.

I know at least Hunter and Owen watch the show, really just trying to light a fire under their asses. As far as exciety threshold, i literally said it was my favorite vid last year 😂. pretty sure the only ones who didn’t take the joke well don’t actually have an original thought as to what good street skiing is. I’d rather watch eggs straight air a gap than jesper 720 swap a “street rail”
