Learning guitar. send help

yo! got my first guitar and in classic paBS style, i wanna go all in and play for hours a day as i learn. curious what the recommended path is? I maxed out the yousician and simplyguitar free samples and might do a 7 day trial but curious if others found success elsewhere. also what other tips and tricks should i know for being a n00b?

i know @Jems and @theabortionator both play who else??

really my method was learning songs i liked, whether i could actually play them or not. youtube is your friend, try learning simpler songs by ear as well.

There are come good people on youtube insta. Marty was mentioned already.

I think everything else aside best thing is too play. Learn song with different chords. Tey a cool riff, learn some scales.

Pentatonic is pretty helpful to noodle to any song.

Idk, more into writing simple songs tham know the geetar super well but just playing you imrpove a bunch. Obviously having goals and learning things is sick. But there's people that play once in a while and theirs people that PLAY. I play my guitar more than I snowboard theae days and Im ok with that. Just keep it handy and pick it up, even for 5 or 10 min here and there.

Learn a bunch of songs that you are interested in learning, learn a bit of theory, write a cool song. Getting used to learning songs by ear is very helpful

My goal originally was to learn a few chords so i could butcher a song and sing along.

Can playa ton of songs you like with 3 or 4 chords.

Ultimate Guitar is a decent app. You can see the chords to various songs. Makes it pretty easy to learn stuff. They have chords lists on there.

Can get a poster of guitar chords to throw up on the wall where you play.


But yeah just keep at it. Shits a pretty good outlet.

When I started learning I used the justinguitar app and thought it was pretty good, but I'm still horrible at playing so maybe not.
Gibson guitar app also helped me learn some simplified versions of a ton of songs but also made me worse at realizing what I am actually playing since it scrolls the song like guitar hero. I got a black Friday deal on it, don't think I would pay full price.

Crazy how well freewheelin holds up and being from the early 60s.

I wanna learn more Dylan songs but I'm a little scared. I think I respect him so much I'm scared to not play them completely proper.

But yeah I feel that. I was trying to play more electric but got sucked into the acoustic hard.

I can badly jam on the electric but I kinda suck lol. Competent enough party music but bad enough to hurt any real guitar players in the vicinity...

Lots of great advice mentioned above. Lots of tutorials on Youtube, Martys mentioned already is a great source but there are many others as well.
Take some lessons, learn some good techniques properly. There are finger placements that can be taught or shown to help with shortcuts to help with transitioning to different chords/notes but do whatever works best for you. It's also a matter of the right hand knowing what the left hand is doing.
Practice, practice, practice.
Play and have fun! If it sounds good to your ear, it most likely sounds good to others.

By letters I assume you mean chords. It’s really both. The tab is the specific string and fret, so playing riffs and solos of individual notes you’ll definitely be more helped by tabs. Tabs also show you the frets and strings to play a given chords. But if you know how to play the chords already then a lot of times they are just called out as a letter or they are lined up with the lyrics to show you what word to change chords on

im particularly struggling with the my ring and pinky fingers when they are on the same fret. it seems my pink has to be too far forward or my ring finger is too far back.

It will get easier, that position that feels awkward AF is building strength that will be effortless in a couple months if you stick with it

i remember when i first learned to play I could not understand how to get my fingers to fit as well. It just takes time. just watching youtube tutorials of songs you want to learn help a lot. Also the basics. Once you got the basics from youtube and get more comfortable, lessons , if you have a good teacher can go a long way. it helped me.

You’ll get there, there’s really only one size of fretboard. Big hands can eventually become an advantage.

Kimda bummed. I have a gig tonight but my martin isn't working. Could play with another mic but not really gonna work to stand and move around.

I tried to get it going but no luck. Im 3 hours from a music store so kinda fucked.

Im gonna fuck with it some more and if I cant fox it Im gonna go early and restring the house guitar or borrow something from a friend. Sucks it's mid may so.most music friends are gone.

Idk kinda a rant but pretty specific to geetar things so posting here.

Have you ever played with any of those clip on sound hole acoustic pickups? I kind of want to get one but reviews are mixed from what I hear

I haven't but have some friends that like them alot. I thought about getting one for my other guitar before I bought an acoustic electric. I think if you check out reviews and spend a few bucks on something quality seems like they're pretty good.

But just going off friends

Work on chords and getting the notes to ring out at first, that was the toughest part for me when I started learning was how much pressure I needed to put on the strings. Once you get calluses on your finger tips it gets easier too.
