How do I ski more playfully?

I’m not sure if that is the right term but I just wish I could ski more playfully and I don’t know how to. I wish I could butter around easier and do 3s but I suffer from being scared of any rotations over 180. (No clue why) My go to trick is a shifty but it kinda gets boring and I wish I could just ski with more variety.



Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

do the hardest tricks you can more often, try some new tricks too. The more you try the less scary everything will be.

practice on trampoline and on easy rails a lot so that you can have a basic grasp on tricks before trying them on a “real” feature.

Play more try to hit a rail from the side no kicker put your hands on the ground if you fall of early keep going

ski with better skiers than you and let them know your trying to learn. be more playful off skis. 270 onto parking curbs. 360 off a sidewalk, etc. just get used to spinning. and for the love of god do some ab workouts lol.

Jib every mogul and side hit you see.
try doing a 180 off moguls, ski switch to the next mogul, and doing a SW 180 off the second mogul.
learn different ways to jump off little things: ollie, nollie, nollie shifty both ways, tail press, shifty tail press, tokyo drift off stuff and bring it back forwards, late 180 shifty, 180 but drag your tails when you do a 180
have fun with sw reverts/sw180s: tail butter your reverts, pop sw180 off your tails, pop sw180 off your noses, pop sw180 off your tails and shuffle it back to sw, ect.

I honestly have just as much fun on all the little hits as I do jumping off of big things. and its a lot safer to jib all the little things than to be going big all the time

Will do. I’ve been doing a lot more ab workouts too but I just have this fear and I don’t know what it is of rotations over 180 and it’s odd because it’s only off bigger things but I can do it on flat ground without skis on

I feel dumb about this but I may have a solution to some of my problems.

Never had my boots actually fitted and I read a thread earlier about shin bang and I’ve been suffering with that too so I decided to go into my local shop to get them better fitted. Turns out I bought my boots (ski swap) 2 sizes too big for me and they had so much room in them (always wondered why people were so happy to get ski boots off at the end of the day) . It may have been the reason I was feeling really loose while skiing and so this may fix some things. Luckily my shop fitted them really well and holy cow I didn’t know ski boots were this snug.

tbh a big part of it is having a really good pop, and a really good ollie (pop off the tails). work on having an explosive pop and suddenly everything feels more light and fast.

Sidehits, if your ski resort is ok with them. Out east, we cant hit sidehits. You can get your pass pulled for that.
Sign up to the freestyler skiing team if you have one. They give you the basics and the theory to progress.
Ski with someone better than you. You will gow faster

don’t be afraid to look silly,, practicing those shitty butter 3’s by rocking on your noses to sw and on your tails back to forward can help get sum awareness imo. whatever skis you have and leg strength obviously matter too

Shitty nosebutters are the foundational trick of all playful skiing; you can learn them everywhere and they’re low risk. Do them in your living room if you get new skis Christmas morning, do them when you’re stuck in lines, anytime you’re waiting around on flat. Eventually they get less shitty with muscle memory.

Get your reps up. I always feel sketchy and scared when I haven't been getting out. Even first run of the day sometimes.

When I get out in the park more regularly I feel way less sketchy.

That's kind of obvious but definitely do it. As mentioned before hit some side hits, try mlre butters even if you suck at them. Try some new tricks on small jumps or rails where you aren't too high off the ground.

When you learn something new in the park, some butters on rollers whatever, keep doing it. Dial that shit in while you have the confidence.

But yeah just ski more and have fun. If you have friends to ski with and push each other thats always a plus.

Or watch zootspace and dive onto your mom's coffee table

really it's just practice. Like that's it. if someone's skiing playfully it's because they're relatively comfortable with whatever trick they're doing. and that only comes with practice. if you're scared, you probably won't look comfortable. This is kinda similar to when people ask about improving their style. it won't look good until it feels good. ie there's no bullshitting - if it feels sketchy to you it probably won't look good. But the good news is that it all comes with practice. stay grinding the nosebutters, especially since you can do them just about anywhere. keep trying 360s whenever you can. if you struggle with anything, post a video on here and people (or at least some people lol) will try to give helpful advice.

My favorite way is to just mess around with my forward and backward pressure. Doing a snappy nollie or jumping over random objects. As far as butters just keep doing whirlybirds till you feel comfy putting some pressure down

You say you like the shifty, Learn Carved shifty all 4 ways on park jumps ASAP. Then take those skills to side hits and rollers for shifty tail drag/tap and stuff like that
