GoPro hate

What’s up with GoPro hate these days? I understand that the vast majority of GoPro users are holiday skiers who think they can put together a cool edit when they can’t ski for shit and don’t know how to edit. But I see tons of cool shots and entire edits sometimes shot on gopro. It’s really convenient to use for people who ski sick lines in the backcountry and wanna film it easily. I kinda wanna get one just to film my backcountry shenanigans or family ski trips and put together a cool edit. What are the thoughts

GoPro footage is very sharp and cinematic looking which doesn’t match the aesthetic that most people want for their videos. The typical gopro wide angle looks like dogshit even compared to regular fisheyes. Its like you can see everything except the rider sometimes, even when they are in frame. And it uses digital zoom instead of optical zoom which suck.

TLDR: Its very limiting if you are trying to film for a legit edit with different angles etc and it has a “preppy” look to it. If you want POV footage, its the best thing in the world tho.

Not sure if you mean gopro in specific or action cameras in general but fuck gopros shit dies in 5 min in the cold

My 12 lasts at least 1 full day of filming if not 2. Might need to get a fresh battery.

got nothing against the footage it's pretty easy to drop the framerate in settings so it doesn't look like a vlog clip. but the batteries they use are dogshit and after owning 2 different gopros that literally wouldn't work under 35F i'm done with them

GoPros don’t suck. Like all cameras it really comes back to the user. I don’t think anyone’s looked at a hotlaps clip and thought his footage sucked. Some people hate on the battery but in their new cameras they’ve pretty much solved it with the enduro battery. And the battery is small enough to carry extras if it is a problem.

There is no such thing as a camera that does everything. Gopro is the industry leader in the thing that it does, which is stable, high resolution, immersive point-of-view footage, in a portable and lightweight body. People who hate on Gopro either don't know how to use their camera correctly, or they want a different camera that does something else (which is fine, but if you genuinely appreciate cinematography, you should appreciate what Gopro enables that other cameras don't). The new enduro batteries last all day, they make a mount that charges your camera while you hold it, and you could put 10 extra batteries in your pockets and not notice the additional weight. There really isn't a valid reason to hate.

At least the pov is still good to watch, insta 360 cams are the most heinous thing to come out of the action cam industry. Absolute dog water to watch something filmed on one

What do you mean? You can adjust the exported framing to be any POV....Do you mean when it's in it's widest 360 view? 360 cams are FAR superior to regular action cams because of the ability to adjust the framing.

Yeah i guess mostly at the super side angles. Probably don’t know the difference for more pov type framing but whenever it’s super wide or on like the pole I just personally think it’s way too fishbowly

Off topic. Please keep releasing those bangers on YouTube even though they make me feel like a shit skier that severely under utilizes Meadows.

Different cameras have different strengths and are better suited for different situations, as others mentioned. However, it's worth noting that a lot of it is preference. for example, there's technically nothing that a vx1000 would do better than a modern camera but a lot of people like the way it looks.

Gopros are good for POV footage. This is why you'll see gopro pov footage even in very high budget films.
Gopros are a good option if you don't have any other cameras. They're waterproof and easy to pass around. Before I had an actual camera I used to film with my gopro as if it was an actual fisheye. But at some point you should graduate from that.
Gopros can be good for follow cams. I personally think that fisheye follow cams look way better for rails, but with gopros it's much easier to follow on the jumps ex. hotlaps.

Tldr gopros have specific uses. good for filming pov lines, hotlaps type follow cams, slvsh games, or making amateur videos w your friends. in any other situation, an actual camera is better

When I was like 12 my parents gave me a GoPro for Christmas. This was like GoPro 1 or whatever. But I instantly thought I wasn’t cool enough to bring it out. I really didn’t use it. Sold it on KSL to buy weed.


but I don’t know if all GoPro hate comes from this dark place of “I’m not good enough” or maybe we have just seen a successful marketing campaign. In my eyes GoPros were for professionals and through their marketing they have made it for your everyday generic Jerry on their first mammoth trip from the bay.

In 2014 GoPro IPOed and went to shit. In 2015 - tom wallnuts dropped a “walk in the park”. In 2021 the tech bros thought it was an easy company to get affiliate links from.

I heard that Michael Schumacher became a vegetable from his ski accident because the GoPro that was mounted to helmet actually punctured through his helmet and into his skull when he hit the rock. Ever since then I have been weary.

They are the best tool for the job for getting the pov shots tho. You just kinda look like a dork.
