How to reassemble Pivot 12 toe piece

I just recently customized a pair of pivots and am putting the bindings back together and can’t figure out how to get the two pieces of the bolt to grab since it is hard to align the inner piece with the outer piece. are there any special tricks? Here’s a picture for reference:
