Do shovel pulls count as natural speed?

Do they? On the same token, do wooden drop-ins? Wooden portable dropins aren’t existing features or resources at a spot, but there’s also no moving parts. Just good ol gravity at use so I think they count.


But what about that one homie who used to slug dingers back in pony league travel ball and can whip you from zero to Mach 2 in one swift swing around the hips with a tuffy? I’d say yeah it still counts cause homies are more accessible than winches or bungees but I want to hear my fellow degenerates’ thoughts.

in my experience 90% of homies can not whip you to mach 2 and get you the sick clip. In my case I still thought i had the speed and caught tips.

imo if there's any human intervention it's not natural, think about skating on flat ground. there's obviously no 'natural speed' on flat ground yet you're gaining speed. so if that's not natural shovel pull def isn't.

if I was describing a spot to somebody as having natty speed that would mean a nice hill

If you look at only the word “natural” then intervention of a person would make it unnatural. This means setting up a drop in previously made, making a pile of snow for drop in, rollers, and whatever else is unnatural.

If you look at the whole of “Natural Speed” it is speed caused by nature. And for skiing the only option for that is via gravity. Creating a higher starting point (drop in) requires work before skiing, but the gravity for your speed is natural.

When it comes down to it, the line can blur a little bit without much consequence. Most of the homies who I’ve hit spots with prefer natural speed. It’s one less factor to need to consider during your session.

This is my hierarchy of preference:

1. hill before feature
2. something at the spot to drop in from (ie snow bank)
3. Build a drop in from snow/use a drop-in
4a. Any of the above plus rollers
4b. any of the above plus a shovel pull
5. e winch
6. Bungee
7. car pull in
8. Winch

my personal line for natural speed is after 4a.

The trick is to find a homeless dude sleeping under a nearby bridge and that would be natural because that is an existing feature. Problem solved.

Yeah technically you could argue that shovel pulls and wooden drop ins aren't natural because you're not solely using gravity and natural terrain. However, using human muscle or a pile of wood has much more in common with using a natural slope than using a winch, bungee, or car. I think some people get too caught up with the term "natural speed" itself. Ultimately, it's about simplicity, but whether you care or not is totally up to you. All that to say I agree with OP

I just thought natty speed meant a hill that you can use instead of building a drop, this is like the philosophical justification but if you tell me a spot is natty speed and I show up and have to build a drop in id be pissed lol

meh. Id say if its a street clip its valid no matter how speed is acquired. I live on the prairies where there is no such thing as natty speed, and too broke to buy a winch so any street clip I've got has a shovel pull. the trick counts more than the speed. also I must say some b roll of the homies grinding to get the rider speed always is nice in a street part.

I'm no authority on this matter, but I would say a shovel pull adds to the clip. It makes it a team effort. Same goes for building your own snow hill to gain speed from. It shows commitment and team spirit.

For me, natty speed is any natural slope/stairs/whatever nearby. Using a winch, bungee or car is hitting the juice :)

what about that one iconic scene from zootspace where the guy gets shovel pulled and then slides a c-rail that's like 4 different rails and then skis into some brush and then a homie comes a hugs him it's during the last song thankss

I like this answer. If someone tells me a feature is natty speed I expect to not have to build or setup a drop in or need anything/anyone to pull me.

If I am watching a video, anything that fits the above criteria also typically looks better. Not tying to dismiss winch shots or anything.

Maybe off-topic, but still shovel related. Does it significantly de-value a clip if the jump is pre-made and brought to the spot vs. a neatly shaped 100% snow jump?

@hi_vis360 I really just can't keep track of everyone, I can recognize some people but I haven't really taken the time to investigate the identity of every clip. but I will know him now!

Already too much work for 90% of people including me lol, I'm not going back and studying fits and matching them to the "in order of appearance" list, then trying to look them up on insta when they all have crazy ass handles that aren't there names and private accounts

Yeah but if people haven’t seen stain then that’s on them. Plus the zootspace park edits. At that point you don’t have to be a detective to recognize some of the riders

When I first found out about Welf it took me a solid 45 minutes of digging to find out who it was, I'm just saying most ppl aren't putting in effort to learn names, just enjoy the vid and move on

Worth the digging for sure. But yeah I feel that, although personally, if I like someone's skiing I'm probably gonna check the names to find out who they are. Usually not hard if I already recognize most of the other skiers in the video
