Yeah, Wintergreen didn't even make it through February. Springs only has enough snow for a few runs and small features. Snowshoe closed Silver Creek for the season. Wisp is surprisingly still running their tow park, shoutout those guys. Mid-Atlantic season is absolutely trashed. Watching the west and northeast get blanketed while we keep losing hills is brutal.
I moved away awhile ago but got temporarily stuck back in southeast in 2021. I was not about to deal with that lack of snow lol

Wisp is supposedly blowing snow all next week at night when the temps are low enough. This will be the latest I have ever seen them blow.

Random bump I know but I drove to NC a few weeks ago for my cousin's wedding and couldn't stop thinking about all the potential of the Appalachians...if they actually got snow. For real tho, does backcountry skiing exist in WV, VA, or NC? Even just what I could see off I-77, it sure looks like the terrain would be fun and some definitely steep mountains exist.
Yes, barely (atleast in WNC) You have to get up to the high peaks where the balds are because the foliage is too thick and we don’t keep a base. Otherwise you can skin and ski the part of the Blue Ridge parkway when they close it for winter. It’s hard to access though, and you have to time it right.
It’s not worth it, but I enjoyed doing it. Probably won’t again though.

White Grass Ski Touring Center in Davis, WV is the only established XC/backcountry spot I know of.
The most backcountry any of my WV friends do is on downhill MTB trails in the local woods whenever there's enough snow. Not exactly steep and deep, but sometimes it's ski rocks in the woods or don't ski at all.
Worked with some shredders from NC that were really cool. One of them Patrolled @Keystone and is a firefighter in SLC now. They rip honestly. The NC outdoor scene seems extremely vibrant with skiers/bikers/climbers alike

Last season a few days they actually had it sped up. It wasn’t too bad. Last time I went though ya it was back to the crawl. I don’t mind it too much. It’s the only time you get a decent view of the valley.

Its rare to do anything “back country” in my area but when there is snow it’s very dense woods that make it hard to ski

You don’t see any of the real mountains of 77. Back when it used to snow when I was little me and my dad and his friends would skin up or do sled shuttles in the Monongahelia national forest up in WV. Best skiing in the east coast no doubt is the 45-4600 footers in WV

White grass isnt really backcountry it’s just an xc ski center it’s all marked and the land is owned by the owner chip. I used to backcountry ski all those massive mountains south of Canaan valley when I was little but it literally does not snow anymore. They got way more snow then anywhere I’ve ever seen thought when I was little it would always have way more snow than snowshoe even
Beech is pretty nice. It has that “west coast ski resort” feel. Doesn’t feel like NC at all. And the fact they have a brewery at the mountain doesn’t hurt either.

I almost went down to NC last year because app ski opened before anywhere near me and I have a few homies I could of crashed with in Boone but I just didn’t have the money to justify skiing 4 days earlier to drive 5:30 hours
